About this place American River Parkway (Discovery Park area)

The American River Parkway near Discovery Park, where the American and Sacramento rivers meet north of downtown, has long been listed in cruising directories as an informal gay cruising area. Reports put activity on the wooded side trails away from the main bike path, mostly in the daytime. This is a busy public park used by cyclists, runners, families and anglers, and rangers patrol it. Public sex is illegal and can lead to arrest. Use daylight hours, keep to yourself around other park users, do not leave valuables in your car, and tell someone where you are going if you head onto isolated trails.

This beautiful stretch of river is easily accessible from the Tower Bridge and we had a great time wandering down in the sunshine, looking at the skyline in one direction and the natural world in the other

The American River is the reason I moved here 10+ years ago. Gorgeous and peaceful. Until you get on parkways. The bicyclists who ride the shared paths on the rivers parkway are psychopathic and assault people daily. Parks service and police can’t be bothered. I have seen them run into dogs, people, and children on both the paved and dirt paths. Then they yell at the injured for being in “their way”. Pedestrians first is not a law recognized by these maniacs. I would highly recommend you practice P.E.A.C.E (people engaging against cyclists extremism) by bringing pepper spray on your walks or wielding a stick to create distance between yourselves and the tires. California is a stand your ground state and you can legally pepper spray people trying to assault you

I'm reviewing this as a hiker, not a biker. We visited the area near the Fair Oaks bridge and the Sunrise Blvd bridge. The views at the river and from the bridges are magnificent and this is really a lovely area to take a casual walk. However, the "trail" is mostly a wide, paved, well-maintained bike path and the bikes dominate the action. Walkers must walk along a narrow and irregular path on the left side against the bike traffic. Be careful as you cross the bike path. The bikes whir and zip along, the bike groups are chatting loudly as they ride, and it's more of an "event" than a tranquil place to stroll. So...beautiful, yes. Conducive to a peaceful walk or meaningful hike, not so much.

Sacramento Bar is adjacent to the American River Parkway across Jim's bridge. It is a clean and well maintained area with trails, river access and picnic tables. Rest rooms are open. Access is easy from Sunrise Boulevard and there is ample parking. Self registration is $5.00 daily and can be paid by credit card or cash.

This is an important green space in the State Capital, lots of room to take a long walk or a long bike ride. Nice use of the flood plain along the river.

For anyone that loves the outdoors this is a must. Multiple picnic areas accessible by car and bike. American river. Is clean and very scenic. Bike bath also has a shoulder for running and walking. All the picnic areas have bathrooms.

This is a LONG parkway. The further away from downtown, the better. Near the central city and Discovery park, it is impossible to avoid homeless camps including trash, hypodermic needs, and other unmentionable things. There aren't any real bath facilities. If you decide to walk the trails, be on the lookout for cyclists - there are been some very bad collisions with pedestrians. Better to walk on the levee along the Sacramento River starting near Broadway.

American River Parkway was beautiful at one time, now it is trashed with homeless camps and irresponsible teenagers

Lack of bathroom. Construction sites in the park. Homeless people walking around. Only the boat launching dock looks good.
