About this place The Midnight Sun

The Midnight Sun is one of the defining institutions of the Castro's bar scene — a video bar in the original sense, with multiple screens covering the walls playing music videos, movie clips, and pop cultural content that forms the background to the evening's conversation. The bar has been a fixture on 18th Street, the heart of the Castro's secondary commercial strip, for decades. The atmosphere is social rather than cruising-oriented — the videos create a shared focal point that makes the Midnight Sun more approachable for visitors and newcomers than darker, more purpose-specific venues. The crowd is mixed: gay men primarily, but a broad demographic range that reflects the Castro's increasingly diverse population. Happy hour draws office workers and Castro locals; later in the evening the crowd densifies and the energy lifts. For visitors to San Francisco who want to understand the Castro without needing a specific sub-cultural passport, the Midnight Sun is the right starting point. It is the neighbourhood pub in a neighbourhood where neighbourhood pubs carry outsized historical significance.

Played popular hits from 80s and 90s, and had that feel of a bar by day and party by night. Great fun!

Great bar to start the weekend - service was friendly, plenty of space and the lads that go here definitely make you feel welcome. Early-ish start straight after work on a Friday worked really well.

We had a good first impression of this bar on our visit. The drinks were reasonably priced and they were playing good music. About half an hour in though they turned off the music to watch the latest episode of Pose. This is fair enough as it’s probably a weekly event but it made us leave as we wanted to watch it properly when we got home.

Had a really good night out here. After trying a couple of other bars and being a little disappointed this was much better. There was a good crowd and atmosphere.

Love the bar but was served twice this week by the nastiest bar tender ever..Shaun Norman. Look him up on facebook so you can avoid him serving you drinks. He is to be avoided at all costs. He was so rude. I ordered 2 vodka 7ups in tall glasses for me and my boyfriend and he tried to charge me $32 claiming that I ordered 2 double vodkas and threw the drinks down the sink in front of me and my partner when I tried to explain that I didnt order doubles. It was our first drink of the evening. So rude. It was the 2nd time he was rude to us within 2 days. I think he is racist. Im Irish Italian with a Northern Ireland accent so I spoke very clear English to him. Was very upsetting. Apart from his nastiness the other bar tenders, the bar and gogo dancers are great. But I would never go back. When I saw him on bar duty I dreaded going to the bar. Horrifying that gay men can be so nasty to their own kind. He should be ashamed. Nothing friendly or fun about this bar tender.

This bar has the best happy hour I know. 2 for one from 11am to 9pm. It gets busy but it's the funnest place to be on a Friday evening in the Castro. Bears, drag queens, twines, girlfriends all. Bartenders work hard and serve you fast if you are decent with your tips. Never miss this place on our visits to SF.

I came here with a few friends and there was a drag show on for a fundraiser. They were selling raffle tickets by height or inseam. Bar staff were friendly enough, but the drag queens and one drag king were the highlights - very friendly and a hoot. Happy hour specials of 2-for-1s are great. Definitely the gay bar to come to in SF.

This place was probably the one bar I spent the most time at when living in the city. They always had a great 2-4-1 Happy Hour until 9pm, which they still have as of today! It was a great bar to head to for early evening drinks and prices and I enjoyed the videos from music, movies and TV show clips. It looks like over the years since my last visit they have made some very nice major improvements of the interior. The bartenders were reasonably friendly, but what impressed me the most was the nice selection of craft beers on tap. I ordered a ‘Big Daddy’ draft and enjoyed it as I took in some of the videos showing on the screens. I even recognized a few faces in the crowd from years ago, but most of the bartenders were new. It was good to stop by for a beverage to reminisce for a little while then move on.

The bartender was not attentive at all. He was too involved with this "party of 8" and their potential tip and essentially ignored the other patrons. The music was bland and there is no longer a time when they play funny video clips . Very boring bar now.

Was there on Sunday, it was my first time in san fran. As a non lgbt woman I wanted to get a sense of how people lived in the Castro district. First off it was packed don't know if it was because of the bay to breakers event or just cause it's a cool spot. (Which i thought it was) They were doing a cancer benefit which included several different performances, the host was such a cutie in her pink outfit and very funny. I had a blast I could tell many locals went there. Not only that the bartenders are actually nice and drinks were good. Very centralized location. Would definitely stop in again on my next trip to San fran.
