About this place The Fireplace

The Fireplace is one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars on Dupont Circle's P Street, and its longevity reflects a quality that commercial gay venues often lose: it is a genuine neighbourhood bar that serves its community rather than a venue designed for visitors and special occasions. The interior lives up to the name — a working fireplace, low lighting, comfortable seating, and an atmosphere that makes staying for a second or third drink feel entirely natural. The crowd is predominantly local: Dupont Circle residents, people who work in the neighbourhood, regulars who have been coming for years. The bar's position on P Street between 21st and 22nd Streets puts it at the western end of the Dupont gay corridor — slightly removed from the JR.'s / Number Nine / Trade cluster, which gives it a quieter character on most nights. For visitors wanting to understand the residential character of DC's gay community rather than its nightlife infrastructure, The Fireplace is the right bar.

Older, black crowd. Great music and nice bartenders. I’m in town visiting for pride and this was a nice, lowkey spot. My friend and I, Robert (who loves drinks) had an amazing time.

On the oldest bars in DC serving the best drinks!

Went there last night to see if my experience would be better than the last time I went. The bartenders (both upstairs and downstairs) were so rude to me and act like I’m not even there. Especially the black bartenders. The one white or hispanic bartender was the only one who asked if I wanted something. Why are the black bartenders there always so rude to me? It’s weird and it’s giving internalized hate. I’m aware that I’m lightskin and attractive. Some might think that I am full of myself, but I’m not. To not give me service because of who you think I am is tacky, rude, and unprofessional. I will never go back to this bar again!!!
