About this place Different Drummers

Different Drummers isn't a place, it's a non-audition community band in the Washington DC metro area, a musical space where LGBTQ+ musicians and allies play together.

It started in 1980. For over 40 years, it's been a fixture in the local music scene, pulling together people who just want to make music in a supportive environment. You don't need to be a pro; if you want to play, or even just try playing, they're happy to have you.

No auditions. That's the main thing. It means no gatekeeping, just a group of people from across the LGBTQ+ community—plus straight allies—who value a place to play without the pressure. Everyone gets to join, everyone gets to perform.

If you're in Washington and want to see how the local LGBTQ+ cultural scene actually works, this is a real look at how people connect over shared creative interests. Check out their website at dcdd.org to see about joining, or just to find out when their next performance is.

I am the worship drummer at Crossroads Neighborhood Church in Bremerton. Our Worship Director, Eddie Young, signed us both up for a Worship Drumming workshop at The Drummers' Den Studio, Poulsbo, hosted by Terry Marsh. We totally had an incredible 4 hour experience there today!!! Terry's professional and practical syllabus for this amazing course was totally experience-driven and very "true-to-life" as it was taken from his years of drumming in churches of all types and denominations, both traditional & contemporary. (Not to mention all other types of drumming and percussion) This type of dynamic workshop is long overdue, and provided both Eddie, myself, and all of the many participants with some very useful and powerful tips. Tips we could all take back with us to our respective Worship Teams, to help each of us to become a better conduit of God's message through music and song. I cannot say enough about how moving and emotionally connecting Terry and his wife Tracie were, along with Kathyrn and Jason rounding out their amazing yet very humble workshop Worship Team! They really rocked!!!
