The honest summary: Patna, the capital of Bihar, is a city of about 1.7 million people (2.05 million in the urban area at the 2011 census), and it has no gay bar, no gay club, no gay sauna and no regular queer party night that we could confirm in October 2026. Bihar has also been a completely dry state since 2016, so there are no bars at all. What Patna does have is a small, determined, trans-led community: Dostana Safar, the group founded by Reshma Prasad, has organised Pride marches here since 2012, and the 2025 march on 14 July drew about 300 people from the Bihar Hindi Sahitya Sammelan to Dinkar Golambar. Most gay life in Patna happens on apps and in private circles. If you want gay nightlife, Kolkata and Delhi are each a short flight away.
Legal in one line: Consensual sex between adults of the same sex has been legal in India since the Supreme Court read down Section 377 on 6 September 2018 (Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, in force since 1 July 2024, contains no equivalent offence. Same-sex marriage isn't recognised (Supreme Court, 17 October 2023). Trans people have legal recognition under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019, and Bihar set up a State Transgender Welfare Board in August 2025.
There is no bar or club in Patna that calls itself gay or LGBTQ+, and there can't be one in the usual sense: the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act bans making, selling and drinking alcohol everywhere in the state, hotels included. Nightlife here means rooftop restaurants, cafés, mocktail lounges and the malls, and we found none with a queer night or any record of LGBTQ+ events.
Some websites describe a club called "Pulse" as Patna's best-known gay club. We found no trace of it anywhere else, and we think it's machine-written filler. The same goes for pages that call Patna "a beacon for the LGBTQ+ community" with "gay guesthouses" in the old city. A few hotels show up as "LGBT-welcoming" on booking sites; that's a filter tag the hotel ticks, not a sign of a gay scene.

There is no gay sauna in Patna. Massage parlours advertising "male to male" services aren't gay venues, and we don't list them. We also don't list outdoor cruising areas anywhere in India, because meetings with strangers in isolated places are where most of the robberies and blackmail cases happen (see the safety section).
Dostana Safar is the organisation that holds Patna's queer life together. It was formed in 2011 in Bhabua, Kaimur district, registered in 2012, and is led by its founder-secretary Reshma Prasad, a trans woman who in December 2023 became the first transgender member of a university senate in India when she was nominated to the Patna University Senate. The group works mainly with trans and kinnar communities. It runs Garima Greh, a central-government shelter for transgender people in Khagaul on the western edge of Patna, and it organises the city's Pride marches. It also took the Bihar caste survey to the Supreme Court after the 2023 survey listed "hijra, kinnar, kothi, transgender" as a caste; the court closed the case once the state agreed to record transgender as a gender instead.
We couldn't find a gay men's support group, a student queer collective or a named HIV outreach project for men who have sex with men in Patna that we could confirm as active. Contacting Dostana Safar is the most direct way to find out what's on.

Patna's first Pride march took place on 29 March 2012, when about 20 people walked from Gandhi Maidan to Dak Bunglow Chowk, organised by Project Pehchaan and Dostana Safar. There was another march in 2017. On 14 July 2019 the "Bihar Pride Parade" brought about 500 people from the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan to the Premchand Rangshala, carrying a 500-metre transgender flag; the organisers said the trans flag was the only one they had permission to carry.
The march is now held around 14 July, International Non-Binary People's Day. In 2025 it ran on 14 July from the Bihar Hindi Sahitya Sammelan to Dinkar Golambar, led by Reshma Prasad, with students from Patna Women's College among the roughly 300 people who walked. Dostana Safar also held a "Lovers Pride Parade" around Gandhi Maidan on 14 February 2025, ending at a restaurant run by transgender people. We found no report of a 2026 march, and no date for 2027 had been announced when we checked in October 2026.
Bihar's record on trans rights is mixed. In July 2024 three transgender people, Manvi Madhu Kashyap, Ronit Jha and Bunty Kumar, became the state's first trans police sub-inspectors, after a Patna High Court ruling and coaching at a Patna institute that took them in when others wouldn't. On the other hand, the 2022–23 caste survey counted only 825 transgender people in the whole state, against 40,827 in the 2011 census, and activists called the figure fake. The new State Transgender Welfare Board drew criticism in July 2026 when its first meeting approved a proposal for a temple to the prime minister rather than anything on housing or jobs.
Patna has no gay guesthouse or gay-owned hotel. The business hotels around Fraser Road, Gandhi Maidan and Bailey Road are the most practical bases: they're central and close to the museums, the river and the station. Our hotel list has 11 options from luxury to budget. Remember that no hotel in Bihar can serve alcohol.
Jay Prakash Narayan Airport (PAT) is about 5 km from the centre. Its new terminal opened in June 2025, but the short runway means domestic flights only: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and others. There have been no international flights since 1999; Bihar tendered routes to Kathmandu and other cities in 2026, so check before you plan around them. By train, the Rajdhani to New Delhi takes about 12 to 13 hours, and Vande Bharat trains run to Howrah (Kolkata), Ranchi, New Jalpaiguri and Lucknow. The first 3.5 km of the Patna Metro opened on 7 October 2025, but its three stations (Patliputra Bus Terminal, Zero Mile, Bhoothnath) don't reach the sights. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the practical way to get around.
Climb Golghar, the 1786 granary next to Gandhi Maidan, for views over the Ganges. Spend a morning at the Bihar Museum on Bailey Road, a large modern museum whose collection includes the Didarganj Yakshi. Visit Takht Sri Patna Sahib in the old eastern city, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, and the Mauryan ruins at Kumhrar. In the evening, locals walk and eat along JP Ganga Path, the riverside road nicknamed Patna's Marine Drive. Nalanda (about 90 km), Rajgir (about 110 km) and Bodh Gaya (about 130 km) are better as an overnight trip than a day out.
October to March is best. Summers are extremely hot and the monsoon runs from late June to September. During Chhath Puja (13 to 16 November 2026) the riverbanks fill with huge crowds and trains are packed with people coming home.
Patna is socially conservative and there's no visible gay space, so discretion is the norm; public affection between two men will draw stares. We found no Patna-specific news report of a gay dating-app robbery in 2024–2026, but gangs that use gay apps to lure, rob and blackmail men have been broken up across India, including in Surat in August 2026. Meet new contacts in a mall or café first, don't go to isolated places or someone's flat on a first meeting, and leave cards and spare cash at the hotel. Call 112 in an emergency.
Alcohol is the other trap. The ban applies to tourists and foreigners too. Since a 2022 amendment a first offence for drinking is usually settled with a fine, reported at ₹2,000 to ₹5,000, but repeat offences can mean jail, and police check vehicles and trains at the state border. Don't bring a bottle in.
Samlaingik (समलैंगिक): gay or homosexual, though most people just say "gay". Kinnar (किन्नर): transgender, the respectful Hindi term. Chakka (छक्का): a slur, good to recognise. Pranam / Namaste: hello. Dhanyavaad: thank you. Ka haal ba?: how are you? (Bhojpuri). Bachao!: help!
Gay bars and clubs: none (Bihar is a dry state)
Gay sauna: none
Cruising: not listed
Community: Dostana Safar (trans-led, runs Garima Greh in Khagaul)
Pride: around 14 July; last confirmed march 14 July 2025; 2026 not confirmed, 2027 not announced

Airport: PAT, about 5 km from the centre
Best months: October to March
