The honest summary: Varna has no gay bar, no gay club and no gay sauna in 2026. Bulgaria's third-largest city and its main Black Sea port is a good beach-and-history trip, but queer life here runs on a small, determined community group rather than on venues: the Queer Varna Foundation and its Varna Queer Fest every June. If you want a gay night out, the nearest club is about 95 km south in Sunny Beach.

What the scene actually looks like

We checked Bulgarian-language listings (zavedenia.com, local press such as Moreto and BNR Varna), the Queer Varna Foundation's own channels, Spartacus, Travel Gay, misterb&b and Google Maps. None of them shows a dedicated LGBTQ+ bar, club or sauna operating in Varna. The Queer Varna Foundation's 2025 community survey says the same thing from the inside: respondents named the lack of queer bars as one of the things they miss most.

Some international guides still list Varna venues that are long gone (see the "gone" list below), and misterb&b describes the mainstream disco Xtravaganzza as the heart of the queer scene; we found nothing to back that up. Google Maps returns ordinary cocktail bars and nightclubs for any "gay bar Varna" search. That ranking isn't evidence, so we don't list them.

What does exist is a handful of mainstream places that host queer events. The Social Teahouse on Preslav Street, a tea house in the centre, held the film screenings of the MELT Varna Queer Fest in August 2024 and is a Queer Varna partner venue. Taboo, a mixed fetish club on Vasil Levski Boulevard, has hosted drag shows and is also listed as a partner; it is not a gay club and its nights are adult-only. Events move between venues, so the Foundation's Instagram is the place to check.

Varna Queer Fest and the Pride question

Older guides, including an earlier version of this page, said Varna holds an annual Pride. It doesn't, and never has. The nearest thing was a rally of about 40 people near City Hall on 24 June 2023, protected by more than 100 police, after nationalists disrupted a screening of the film Close. Bulgaria's only regular Pride march is Sofia Pride in June (13 June in 2026).

Varna's own event is the Varna Queer Fest, run by the Queer Varna Foundation. The third edition ran from 5 to 27 June 2026 with film, literature, exhibitions, drag, workshops and meet-ups, and its organisers call it the only LGBTI+ festival of its kind outside Sofia. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced at the time of writing; expect June again. The Foundation also runs smaller community events through the year.

Community and support

The Queer Varna Foundation (Фондация „Куиър Варна“) has no public office; it posts events on queervarna.bg and Instagram @queervarna. The Sofia-based group LGBTI Deystvie has offered legal help to people in Varna since 2019. For free, anonymous HIV testing, KABKIS Varna is in the Regional Health Inspectorate building at Bregalnitsa 3, room 501; a Ministry of Health list gives Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00, but call +359 52 665 200 first as the closing time isn't published.

Beaches

Varna's city beaches run along the Sea Garden and are mainstream. The beach most often linked with gay visitors on this part of the coast is Panorama beach at the northern end of Golden Sands, about 17 km north of the centre. The official Varna tourism site says its northernmost part is used as a nudist area, and the Bulgarian Wikipedia entry on nudist beaches notes that part of it is known as a gay-nudist beach. Buses 109 and 209b stop at Panorama. Nudity outside that stretch is not tolerated, and the usual discretion applies.

Safety: be realistic

Central Varna is safe for tourists, and same-sex couples checking into a hotel are very unlikely to have problems. Social attitudes are conservative, though. In the Queer Varna Foundation's 2025 survey, a small community sample rather than a representative poll, 41% said they had faced harassment or violence in the past year and 93% said they hide their identity at least some of the time; streets and public transport felt least safe. Most locals don't hold hands in public, and we'd suggest visitors do the same outside the hotel and the beach.

Apps are how most people meet here. Nationalist groups have targeted queer events in Varna before, so if you go to a festival screening or party, keep rainbow items off on the way home.

Where to stay

No Varna hotel markets itself to LGBTQ+ guests, and none has a documented record either way. Staying in the centre or the Greek Quarter keeps the cathedral, the pedestrian streets and the Sea Garden within walking distance. Near the park, Rosslyn Dimyat is the big spa hotel on Knyaz Boris I, Graffit Gallery Hotel is a design hotel with a pool, and Modus Hotel sits in the Greek Quarter. Hotel Panorama faces the bay at the southern end of the Sea Garden. In the old centre, Family Hotel Opera Plaza, Royal Hotel and Hotel Art Green are small and close to the Roman baths. On a budget, Nomado Hostel and Yo-Ho-Hostel are both central. See all Varna hotels.

The nearest gay scene

Alexander Club in Sunny Beach, about 95 km south (roughly 1.5 hours by road), is the only gay club on the Bulgarian coast. It opened in 2023 as the successor to the old Mix Club Alexander in Varna, runs drag shows and is seasonal, roughly April to October. For a full scene with several bars and clubs, you need Sofia, about 480 km by road, around 6 hours by car or 7.5 hours by train.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • Mix Club Alexander, Varna's gay club founded in 2005 by drag artist Elsa Parini and last listed at Hotel Cherno More, no longer exists. Its successor is Alexander Club in Sunny Beach.
    • Mix Club Porno on Musala Street is closed, according to zavedenia.com, though Spartacus still lists it.
    • Rosso on Odrin Street appears on a single user-submitted site; we couldn't confirm it ever operated as a gay bar.
    • "Tsvetochek Club" appears on Google Maps as a gay night club in Briz, with no reviews, no social media and no other trace. We don't list it.
    • Varna Pride: there has never been one (see above).

    Practical tips

    • Golden Sands is about 17 km north, Aladzha Monastery about 15 km and the Pobiti Kamani stone forest about 20 km west. The Madara Rider, a UNESCO site since 1979, is about 75 km inland.
    • The Archaeological Museum holds the Varna gold, dated to about 4600–4200 BC, among the oldest worked gold in the world. The Roman baths and the Dormition Cathedral are in the centre.
    • The city is on Eastern European time (EET/EEST).

No. Varna has never held a Pride march. The city's LGBTI+ event is the Varna Queer Fest, run by the Queer Varna Foundation every June. Bulgaria's Pride march is in Sofia.
