Gay Cruising in Medellín: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

Medellín's cruising scene is small but real — and it happens almost entirely indoors, which in this city is a feature, not a bug. The map has three poles: Men's Club, the three-level institution that has been La Candelaria's cruise bar since 1999; the Calle 33 corridor in Laureles, where Vachu Bar and Sillón Rojo sit a few blocks apart; and Centro's sauna street, Carrera 45D, home to Cruising Fusión and El Castillo. But before any of that, read the warning box below — in Medellín, the most dangerous cruising ground is your phone.

Read this first: the dating-app trap. Medellín has a documented epidemic of app-date robberies using scopolamine (burundanga) — a drug slipped into drinks that leaves you compliant, then unconscious; after a string of foreign-tourist deaths, the US Embassy issued a specific warning about dating apps in this city, and Tinder pushed its own alert for Colombia. Five rules, none optional:

    • First meeting: busy public place — a café in Provenza, a bar on the strip. A profile that refuses is an answer, not an obstacle.
    • Your drink never leaves your hand or your sight. Not at the bar, not on the date, not "just for a second." Bottles over cocktails; watch them opened.
    • Don't host on the first meeting — the classic setup ends in your emptied Airbnb. The venues in this guide exist precisely so you don't have to.
    • Expect the doorman to say no anyway. Because of the drugging wave, most apartment buildings and hotels in El Poblado and Laureles now run a strict "no guests" policy, or require the visitor's passport/ID to be registered at reception in advance. Bringing someone home unannounced usually ends with both of you stuck at the gate arguing with security — check your building's rule before the night starts, not at 2 a.m.
    • Share live location with a friend before any date, and check in after. Locals do this; copy them.
    • Two or more new "friends" joining the date = leave. The team version of the scam is the one that turns violent.

None of this is a comment on the people. Paisas are famously the warmest, most courteous hosts in South America — you'll hear "a la orden" ("at your service") from every shopkeeper and "con mucho gusto" ("with great pleasure") in answer to every thank-you, and the friendliness is real. That's exactly the point: the scams work because the charm usually isn't fake. Enjoy the warmth; keep the vigilance anyway. Both are part of the local etiquette.

Legal in one line: Colombia has had marriage equality since 2016 and strong anti-discrimination law, and Medellín scores 81/100 on the GayOut index. The law is on your side; the street crime isn't — the whole game here is venue-to-venue, door-to-door.

How the city is wired: a city with two souls

Medellín runs on a contrast you can feel in a single taxi ride. On one side, Provenza / El Poblado: neon glowing over green terraces, cocktail ice clinking, coffee on the evening air — the polished, almost-European Medellín where you sleep (the gay-friendly hotels cluster here), warm up at Bar Chiquita, and soak at Saint Moritz without a commute. On the other, the warmer, darker, more urban Medellín where the actual hunting happens: Centro/La Candelaria with Men's Club and the sauna street — alive by daylight, emptying fast after dark — and Laureles, whose Calle 33 strip is the happy middle: unlike Centro, Laureles stays pleasant and genuinely walkable at night, with restaurants and bars keeping the street lit and peopled until late.

Getting between the souls: the Metro is the paisas' pride and joy — spotless, safe, and the one thing no local will let you mock. San Antonio or Exposiciones stations put you near Centro; Estadio station covers Laureles and Calle 33 — use it freely by day and early evening (it closes around 23:00). After that, rides are cheap and everywhere: Uber, DiDi, Cabify, and the local favorite InDrive, which lets you set the fare upfront. The paisa rule that covers everything: no dar papaya — don't give the street a reason. Phone pocketed, watch at home, taxi ordered from inside.

The cruise bars

Men's Club · Carrera 43 #56-25, La Candelaria

The institution: Medellín's cruise bar since 1999, three levels with two bars, cruising floors above, and a crowd that's local, unhurried and all ages. Open daily from 16:20 (yes, :20 — paisa precision), closing 23:30 early week, 01:00 Thursday and Sunday, 03:00 Friday–Saturday. Weekday early evenings are the after-work wave; weekend nights are the full show. It's the one Centro venue worth staying out late for — order the taxi from inside when you're done.

Vachu Bar · Calle 33 #74B-50, 2nd floor, Laureles

The new-generation interactive cruising bar at the Bulerías roundabout: private cabins, a leather swing, a mirror room and themed fetish nights, with a twist unusual for the genre — it's officially mixed (gay/bi/hetero/trans), with the crowd skewing by night and theme. Cover around COP 20,000 (~US$5) with a beer included; roughly 18:00–02:00 weekdays, to 04:00 Friday–Saturday (Saturday–Sunday open from mid-afternoon). Be clear on what "mixed" means here: Vachu is genuinely a swinger-style venue (men, women, bi, trans), and some nights draw a classic hetero/swinger crowd. If you're a gay man looking for a men-only scene, check @VachuBar for the night's theme first — or skip the guesswork and walk ten minutes down the street to Sillón Rojo, which is the certain bet.

Sillón Rojo · Calle 33 #65B-22

The men-only den a few blocks down the same street: labyrinth, video room, glory holes and secure lockers, no mixed-crowd asterisks. Pricing runs by length of stay rather than flat cover, it discounts often, and it stays open late. Less polish than Vachu, more certainty about why everyone's there — pick by mood, or do both; it's a ten-minute walk between them.

The saunas: Carrera 45D and the Poblado option

Centro's Carrera 45D is effectively sauna street: Cruising Fusión at #57-44 is the full-service flagship — sauna, Turkish bath, video bar, pool, jacuzzi, maze, terrace and smoking zone, men only, open daily from 14:00 (to 22:00 Sun–Thu, to 02:00 Friday–Saturday) — and El Castillo at #57-85 answers with a jacuzzi, Turkish bath, X-rated video bar, labyrinth and frequent promos. Sauna Club 55 (Calle 55 #45-44, daily 14:00–21:30) rounds out the Centro trio with a younger-mixed crowd. The rhythm matters: these are afternoon venues — locals arrive 3–7 p.m., and the smart move is to be done and in a taxi by dark, except on Fusión's late Friday–Saturday nights, when you taxi door-to-door anyway. And the city hands you the perfect excuse: Medellín is la ciudad de la eterna primavera, the city of eternal spring — 24°C most days, and a tropical downpour that rolls off the mountains around 4 p.m. almost on schedule. When the sky opens, half the city ducks into cafés. The other half ducks into Carrera 45D's steam rooms or Men's Club's bar. Be in the second half.

In El Poblado, Saint Moritz — sister of the Bogotá institution — delivers the sauna-turco-jacuzzi-bar package without the Centro commute, which makes it the default for visitors based in Provenza. Sauna Atlanta completes the GayOut list.

The party layer that feeds it

Start where the community starts: Bar Chiquita (Calle 10A #38-23, Provenza, roughly 19:00–01:00) — the colorful, famously safe cocktail-and-drag bar in El Poblado and the city's favorite pre-game, where the crowd tops up before moving on to the big clubs. From there, Medellín's gay nightlife proper lives on two axes: the Centro strip around Calle 9+1 and friends, and the big-room clubs — Industry, Club Oráculo, Envy — where reggaetón, drag and go-go run until sunrise. Cruising venues peak before the clubs here: the local pattern is sauna or Men's Club in the afternoon-evening, club after midnight. And circle two dates: the Marcha de la Ciudadanía LGBTIQ+ (late June/early July — one of Colombia's biggest Prides, hundreds of thousands strong) and Feria de las Flores in August, when every venue in this guide runs its loudest week. The GayOut Medellín page tracks the live calendar.

Health, cash and three words of paisa

Health: if a condom (condón) breaks, PEP must start within 72 hours — go to the emergency department of a major clinic (Hospital San Vicente Fundación in Centro is the reference) and say PEP/VIH; AHF Colombia runs free, fast HIV testing in Medellín. Condoms are sold at every drugstore (Farmatodo is 24h in Poblado).

Cash: covers and saunas run on pesos — COP 20,000–40,000 (~US$5–10) covers most doors; cards work at the bigger clubs. Carry small bills, never the whole wallet.

Vocabulary that earns its keep: parce / parcero (dude — the paisa password), ¿activo o pasivo? (top or bottom — asked early and without ceremony), chimba ("awesome" — also the all-purpose compliment), farra (a night out), and the one that doubles as a survival manual: no dar papaya — "don't give papaya," the paisa commandment to never make yourself an easy target. Learn that one first.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best gay cruising venues in Medellín?

Four names cover the scene. Men's Club (Carrera 43 #56-25, La Candelaria) has been the city's cruise bar since 1999 — three levels, two bars, open daily from late afternoon. On the Calle 33 corridor, Vachu Bar (Calle 33 #74B-50, Laureles) is the interactive newcomer with cabins, a leather swing and mixed fetish nights, and Sillón Rojo (Calle 33 #65B-22) is the men-only den with a labyrinth, video room and glory holes — Vachu is a genuinely mixed swinger-style venue, so if you want a men-only crowd, Sillón Rojo is the certain bet. For wet cruising, Cruising Fusión in La Candelaria is the full-service sauna with a maze, pool and jacuzzi.

Is it safe to use Grindr or Tinder in Medellín?

Yes — with rules that are not optional here. Medellín has a documented epidemic of dating-app robberies using scopolamine, and after a string of foreign-tourist deaths the US Embassy issued a specific warning about dating apps in the city; Tinder itself pushed an alert for Colombia. The rules: meet first in a busy public place, never leave your drink unattended for even a second, don't bring a first-date back to your accommodation (most Poblado and Laureles buildings now enforce no-guest rules or advance passport registration anyway), share your live location with a friend, and if a profile is rushing you to a private address — delete and move on. The venues in this guide are the safer alternative: that's what they're for.

Where are Medellín's gay saunas?

Mostly in one pocket of Centro/La Candelaria — Carrera 45D is effectively sauna street, with Cruising Fusión at #57-44 (daily from 2 p.m., to 2 a.m. Friday–Saturday) and El Castillo at #57-85, plus Sauna Club 55 nearby on Calle 55 (daily 14:00–21:30). In El Poblado, Saint Moritz — sister of the Bogotá institution — covers the tourist side of town with sauna, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and bar. Centro saunas are an afternoon-to-evening scene; go before dark and taxi out.

Is there outdoor cruising in Medellín?

Not anymore, honestly. Parque Bolívar and the blocks around it were the historic gay quarter, and the area still holds queer history and some street scene — but Centro after dark is where Medellín's crime statistics live, and nobody should be cruising it. The city's scene moved indoors decades ago, and with four cruise venues and a sauna cluster charging a few dollars' entry, there is no reason to gamble. After dark, Centro is for leaving, not lingering.

When is Medellín Pride?

The Marcha de la Ciudadanía LGBTIQ+ fills the city center in late June or early July — hundreds of thousands strong, one of Colombia's biggest. The other date that matters is August's Feria de las Flores, when the whole city parties for a week and the gay venues run their biggest nights. Colombia has had marriage equality since 2016, and Medellín scores 81/100 on the GayOut index.
