Last verified: October 2026. Medellín has no men-only hotel and no clothing-optional guesthouse in 2026. We could not confirm that any hotel here is gay-owned. Gay travel guides have long called Hotel Roma, a small budget hotel in the centre, the city's only "official" gay hotel. We could not confirm that it still markets itself that way, so treat that as unverified. Every other hotel in this guide is a mainstream property that is easy-going about same-sex couples. In practice, that describes most of El Poblado. So the choice is about location. The gay bars are around Parque Lleras and Provenza in El Poblado, with a second cluster on Avenida 33 in Laureles. The men's saunas are about 5 km north in the Centro, around Barbacoas and Calle 57. This guide covers which streets to sleep on, how long the walk home really takes on these hills, Colombia's strict visitor ID rule, the hotel VAT question for foreigners, Pride in June, and staying safe with app dates. Dating-app robberies are the one risk in Medellín that gay visitors need to take seriously.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The walkable gay zone is small. It covers roughly Calle 8 to Calle 10A and Carrera 35 to Carrera 41 in El Poblado, and centres on Parque Lleras (Carrera 38 at Calle 9A) and the restaurant streets of Provenza just uphill. Within those blocks are Donde Aquellos (Carrera 38 #9A-26, open since about 2000), Bar Chiquita on Carrera 37, Club Oráculo on Carrera 36, and the mixed bars Calle 9+1 and Envy. The minutes below come from the distances in our listings, adjusted for real street routes. El Poblado is built on a slope that rises east from Avenida El Poblado (Carrera 43A) towards the Las Palmas road. Every block you sleep above Provenza makes the walk home a climb, so add 2–4 minutes for the gradient. The men-only venues are elsewhere: Sillón Rojo Club in Laureles and the sauna cluster in the Centro. Nobody walks between the three districts. It is a 15–30 minute taxi each way.

Parque Lleras and Provenza: the strip

Hotel Charlee sits on the Parque Lleras corner. Calle 9+1 is 16 m away and Donde Aquellos about 1 min on foot. Our listings put it in the top price tier. Its rooftop pool and bar are open to non-residents, so the roof gets busy at weekends. Casa Kiwi Hostel is our cheapest tier. Our listings place it 35 m from Envy and about 1–2 min from Donde Aquellos, with Chiquita and Oráculo 2–4 min away. Check the street address on your booking confirmation, because Casa Kiwi's address is listed inconsistently. The Art Hotel Medellín on Carrera 41 is 2 blocks downhill. That puts it about 2–4 min from the park, with an easy walk out and a slight climb on the way back. It is rated 4.1 from more than 1,200 Google reviews.

Noise is the trade-off. From Thursday to Saturday, the music around the park and along Calle 9 and Calle 10 runs past 2 am, and street sellers stay later. Ask for a high floor away from the park, or an interior room. At 3 am the walk from Donde Aquellos to any of these three is under 5 minutes along lit, busy streets. The risks there are pickpockets and people offering you things, not empty streets. Since 2024 the city has fenced Parque Lleras itself and closes it at night, after a run of sexual-exploitation cases in the area. The bars around it stayed open.

Upper Provenza and Calle 10A: the sensible middle

Diez Hotel is on Calle 10A at Carrera 34, uphill and east of the action. It is 131 m from Club Oráculo (2–3 min), about 3 min from Chiquita and 4–6 min from Donde Aquellos. The walk back is a short climb. Its 4.6 rating from almost 3,900 Google reviews is the strongest record in our Medellín listings. On a weekend you will hear some of Provenza, but much less than on the park itself. Rango Boutique Hostel on Calle 8 near Carrera 42 is lower down the hill. It is about 4–5 min to Querida Bar and 5–8 min up to Lleras. It has private rooms as well as dorms, which matters if you plan to bring someone back (see the booking rules below).

Hillside El Poblado: sleep well, take a car

Patio del Mundo is a small B&B south of the strip, rated 4.6 from about 230 reviews. Gay travel sites have long described it as a romantic gay-friendly guesthouse. We could not confirm who owns it. It is 623 m from Club Oráculo, which works out at 10–11 min on the map and 12–16 min with the gradient. Café Hotel Medellín Colombia is in the Las Lomas sector on Carrera 31A, 562 m from Oráculo. The walk down takes 9–10 min, but the climb back is steep, so allow 15 min. Both streets are residential and quiet after midnight. Do not walk them alone at 3 am after a night out. Order a car from the bar. The fare is a few thousand pesos.

Down by the river: Poblado metro

Medellín Vibes is a social hostel on Carrera 47 by Poblado metro station, rated 4.6 from about 500 reviews. Our listings have no measured distance for it. It sits well below Avenida El Poblado, so expect about 20 minutes uphill to Lleras. The metro connection is useful by day. At night, the stretch of Calle 10 between the river and Avenida El Poblado goes quiet and is not a street to walk with a phone in your hand. Take a car home.

Laureles: Avenida 33 and the men-only bar

Laureles is flat and leafy, west of the river, and cheaper than Poblado. Its gay nightlife is along Avenida 33 (La 33). Sillón Rojo Club, the city's best-known men-only cruise bar, is at Avenida 33 #65B. Further west at Avenida 33 #78 are Purple Club (reggaeton, drag on some nights) and Happy, which draws a mostly female crowd. Indie Universe on Avenida Nutibara is 6–7 min from Sillón Rojo. Mythical Hotel, beside the Unicentro mall, and Hotel Torre Primavera on Calle 40 are both 7–8 min away. Hotel Casa Laureles on Calle 35 is the pick for the Avenida 33 clubs, 7–8 min from Happy and Purple. beminimal parques on Calle 36 is an apartment hotel. It is the furthest from the bars at 19–20 min, but closest to the stadium and Estadio metro. At 3 am, Avenida 33 and La 70 still have people and traffic. The residential side streets are dark but generally calm. A 5-minute app ride costs little and is still the better choice. From Laureles to Parque Lleras is a 20–30 minute taxi at night.

The Centro: saunas and Barbacoas

The older, local, working-class gay scene is in La Candelaria and the Prado edge of the centre, around Avenida Oriental (Carrera 46) and Calle 57/57A. Barbacoas is the historic LGBTQ street where Pride gathers. Within a few blocks of it are Sauna Saint Moritz (Calle 56), El Castillo (Carrera 45D), Thermas Club (Calle 57), Sauna Club 55, Cruising Fusión and Men's Club. Nearby bars include Kanahan and El Machete on Calle 57A, and Bar La Fuente. Hotel Roma on Carrera 50C is 9–10 min on foot from Kanahan and 10–13 min from El Castillo and Saint Moritz. It is rated 4.6 from about 400 reviews. The Centro is fine in daylight. After dark, the streets around Avenida Oriental and Barbacoas are a different place: theft, drugs and sex work. Go door to door by taxi at night, even for a 10-minute walk.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Men-only: no hotel or guesthouse in Medellín is men-only in 2026. The men-only spaces here are the saunas and Sillón Rojo, not places to sleep. Clothing-optional: none exist. Gay-owned or gay-run: we could not confirm any. Hotel Roma has been billed by gay travel writers as the city's only official gay hotel: discreet, romantic, some rooms with jacuzzi tubs. We could not confirm that it still positions itself that way in 2026, so ask the hotel directly before you book for that reason. Patio del Mundo is often described as gay-friendly. Its ownership is unverified. We have removed an older duplicate listing for it, with a Carrera 36 address. The guesthouse itself has not closed.

Adults only: Haven, A Design Hotel is a four-star, adults-only hotel with a pool. It ranks first on misterb&b's gay-welcoming list for Medellín. It is not in our listings and we could not confirm who owns it, but its written visitor policy is the clearest in the city (see below). Click Clack Hotel on Carrera 37 at Calle 10A is the large luxury hotel at the top of Provenza, a couple of minutes from Oráculo and Chiquita. It is mainstream, with plenty of gay guests. Los Patios Hostal Boutique is a well-reviewed social hostel-hotel that gay travel bloggers recommend. Neither is in our listings.

Who left: no gay hotel closures were confirmed for 2025–2026. On the bar side, Ink Bar in Laureles closed for good in 2023. Many older sites still list it.

Booking rules that bite

Visitor ID is the law, not hotel prudishness. Colombian hotels must register everyone who goes up to a room. They cite Law 679 (the child-protection law), which bans unregistered visitors and anyone under 18 not with a parent. Front desks want a physical passport or a Colombian cédula. Photos on a phone, photocopies and police reports for lost ID are refused. If your date has left his cédula at home, he is not coming up. Since a 2024 case involving a foreign man and minors in a Poblado hotel, staff check carefully.

Joiner fees vary. Some Poblado hotels, including Hotel Charlee and The Art Hotel according to 2025 guest-policy reports, register visitors without charge. Haven's published policy lets each registered guest change one visitor per day for free. It charges COP 120,000 (about US$30) for each extra visitor, added to the room bill. Hostels are the hard case. Some ban visitors in private rooms entirely. Apartment hotels and Airbnbs in towers often have a building concierge with its own rules. The golden tip: if you are travelling as a couple, or expect company, book for 2 guests from the start. A second registered guest is not a "visitor". The price difference is usually small, and there is no 2 am conversation at the desk.

Hotel VAT (IVA). Colombian hotels charge 19% IVA, but non-resident foreign tourists are exempt. You show the passport you entered on, and the hotel checks your tourist entry status. If you are in Colombia on a visa, including a digital-nomad visa, expect to pay the 19%. In July 2026 the government proposed abolishing the exemption for foreign tourists. We could not confirm whether Congress had passed it by October 2026. Check that your quote says whether IVA is included. Many invoices also add a small voluntary hotel-insurance charge (seguro hotelero), which you can ask to have removed.

Other quirks. Rooms are generally non-smoking by law, and hotels add cleaning charges if you smoke. Amounts vary, so confirm before booking. Deposits are often taken on a card at check-in. Minimum stays usually apply over Christmas, New Year and the Feria de las Flores in August, not over Pride.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Medellín Pride (Marcha LGBTIQ+)

The 2026 march took place on Sunday 28 June 2026 as the centrepiece of the city's Medellín Vive Diversa festival, under the slogan "Orgullo para toda la vida". The day began at 9 am with a market and performances in Barbacoas. The march set off at 2 pm along central streets including Avenida Oriental and ended at Parque de las Luces with free concerts into the evening. Organisers expected more than 120,000 people. The 2027 Pride march is TBA. Organisers had not announced a date as of October 2026. It normally falls on the last Sunday of June, but wait for confirmation before booking. Club nights at Industry and the Laureles clubs fill Pride weekend, and Industry hosted a "Love Pride" circuit programme in 2026.

Where to book for Pride: El Poblado or Laureles, not the Centro. The march route closes central roads all afternoon. The metro gets you to and from the march, and you will want to walk to the bars afterwards. Hotels around Lleras do not sell out months ahead the way Pride cities in Europe do, but well-reviewed mid-range rooms in Provenza get tight in the last 3–4 weeks. Book by May.

Not gay, but they fill the city

The Feria de las Flores (early August) and the Christmas lights and New Year period (mid-December to early January) are the two times Poblado prices rise sharply and minimum stays appear. The 2027 Feria dates had not been announced as of October 2026. For December 2026, book now.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. José María Córdova (MDE) is in Rionegro, on the plateau east of the city. The drive to El Poblado takes about 40–60 min, via the Túnel de Oriente or the Las Palmas road. White airport taxis charge a fixed fare to Poblado of about COP 100,000–130,000 (about US$25–33); confirm it at the official rank before you get in. Shared airport buses run to the centre (San Diego) for much less, and from there you take a taxi. Their late-evening schedule is unverified, so do not count on one after a late arrival.

The metro stops before the bars do. It runs from early morning to roughly 11 pm Monday to Saturday, with shorter hours on Sundays and holidays. It is useful for getting around by day (Poblado station for El Poblado, Estadio for Laureles, Prado for the sauna blocks) and useless at 3 am.

Apps. Uber, DiDi, Cabify and InDrive all work in Medellín. Uber operates in a legal grey area, and drivers sometimes ask you to sit in the front. Do it. Yellow taxis are cheap and plentiful. Order one through an app or have the bar call one, rather than flagging a car outside Parque Lleras. Ride-hail fares around the city at night are usually a few dollars.

Walking, by street. On Calle 9, Calle 10 and Carrera 37 between the park and Provenza you can walk until closing. The streets above Carrera 35 and in Las Lomas are fine but dark and steep, so take a car. Calle 10 below Avenida El Poblado down to the river is empty at night. The Centro around Barbacoas and Avenida Oriental: taxi door to door after dark. In Laureles, Avenida 33 and La 70 are fine. Take a car for anything longer than 5 minutes.

Health, safety and the law

The law. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2016, with joint adoption and anti-discrimination protection in services. A hotel cannot refuse you a double bed. Attitudes outside the big cities are more conservative, and anti-LGBTQ+ violence, especially against trans women, remains a real issue in Medellín. Pride organisers raised it again in 2026. Caribe Afirmativo documents violence and can advise if something happens.

App dates are the real risk. The US Embassy recorded 8 suspicious deaths of US citizens in Medellín in November and December 2023. Several involved dating apps and drugging. Canada's travel advice, updated in October 2026, still warns about it. The pattern is consistent. A match builds trust, sometimes over several dates. Then a drink, cigarette or line is spiked with scopolamine (burundanga) or something similar, and the victim is robbed in his own room, sometimes by a team. Gay apps are part of this. The rule that works: first meet in a busy bar. Register your date at the front desk with his physical ID, which is the law anyway. Never leave a drink unattended. Keep your passport and spare cards in the room safe, and carry little cash. A hotel that checks IDs at a 24-hour desk is a safety feature, not a nuisance. This is the strongest reason to choose a staffed hotel over a self-check-in apartment.

PrEP and PEP. For PEP (within 72 hours), go to the emergency department of any private clinic in El Poblado and say "profilaxis post-exposición". For PrEP, Colombian residents get it through their EPS health insurer. Visitors can use private services such as Rapid Test Medellín, which offers a doctor consultation and same-day delivery to your hotel. It advertises about US$99 for 30 days of PrEP, or about US$178 for a first-time bundle with the consultation. Profamilia's Medellín clinic offers sexual-health testing. Check its site for the current address.

Drugs and chemsex. Carrying a small personal dose is not a crime in Colombia, but buying and selling are. Police fine public use in parks. Party drugs here are often not what they claim to be. Tusi ("pink cocaine") is usually a mix of whatever was to hand, and GHB dosing is unforgiving. Anything involving minors, including drugs offered alongside sex, means prison and is aggressively policed in El Poblado.

Smoking. Smoking is banned in indoor public places, including hotel rooms and bars. Cannabis smoking on a hotel balcony will get you a cleaning charge and possibly a request to leave.

Three picks

Budget: Rango Boutique Hostel. It is 5–8 min from Lleras and slightly out of the noise. It is rated 4.7 from more than 550 reviews, breakfast is included, and it has private rooms. Book a private room for 2 and the visitor rule takes care of itself. Casa Kiwi is cheaper and closer if you want to be inside the noise.

Mid-range: Diez Hotel. It is 2–3 min from Club Oráculo and Chiquita and about 5 min from Donde Aquellos. It is far enough uphill to sleep, and it has the best review record in our listings. For Laureles, the equivalent is Hotel Casa Laureles, 7–8 min from the Avenida 33 clubs.

Splurge: Hotel Charlee. It is the only top-tier hotel you can stumble home to from Donde Aquellos in a minute, with a rooftop pool over the valley and a front desk used to registering visitors. Ask for a high room on the side away from the park.
