The honest summary: Toronto still has Canada's biggest gay village, but it is smaller than its reputation. About a dozen queer bars and three men's bathhouses are left, nearly all within a ten-minute walk of Church and Wellesley. The last two years have taken some well-loved names with them: El Convento Rico closed in October 2026 after 35 years, Tammy's Wine Bar shut in January 2026, and Glad Day Bookshop left Church Street in 2025. What remains is busy, friendly and easy to get around, and Pride in late June is still one of the biggest anywhere.

Where the scene is

Church-Wellesley Village is the centre of everything: Church Street from roughly Carlton Street up to Bloor, with Wellesley subway station (Line 1) a block west on Yonge. The bars, the bathhouses, The 519 community centre, the AIDS memorial and most of the Pride street party sit inside these few blocks. You can walk the whole strip in fifteen minutes.

Queen West, Ossington and Parkdale are where the queer scene outside the Village lives: smaller, more mixed bars, roving dance parties and, for now, Glad Day Bookshop's temporary home at 32 Lisgar Street. Leslieville in the east has a long lesbian and queer history but very few dedicated venues left.

Bars in the Village

    • Woody's / Sailor — the best-known gay bar in the city, open since 1989 at 467 Church, with drag, DJs and the long-running Best Chest contest. Sailor is the smaller bar in the same building.
    • Crews & Tangos — drag every night across several rooms at 508 Church. Toronto Life has reported that the bar is staying put until at least 2029.
    • Black Eagle — the leather and fetish bar at 457 Church, with a rooftop patio.
    • The Drink - Cocktail & Pizza Bar — a second-floor cocktail and pizza bar at 459 Church with drag, DJs and drag bingo.
    • Pegasus — a low-key bar with pool tables, pinball and darts at 489B Church.
    • The Well — a queer-owned bar at 487 Church (the old Statlers space) with drag, bingo and karaoke.
    • Church St. Garage Bar — bar and second-floor patio at 477 Church, with drag and karaoke nights.
    • The Lodge — the bear bar, upstairs at 518 Church.
    • Flash on Church — a male strip club at 463 Church; the men-only Cock Bar is upstairs.

Three mainstream pubs on the strip are firmly part of Village life and good for food or a daytime drink: O'Grady's on Church (with The Lodge upstairs), The Churchmouse & Firkin and Hair of the Dog.

Buddies in Bad Times at 12 Alexander Street, a queer theatre company founded in 1979, runs Tallulah's Cabaret for late-night shows and dance parties.

    Beyond the Village

    • Sweaty Betty's — a queer-owned dive bar at 13 Ossington, open since 2004.
    • Three Dollar Bill — a queer-owned bar and community space at 1592 Queen Street West in Parkdale.
    • Nest — a mainstream College Street club that hosts occasional queer parties such as Yes Yes Y'all.

A lot of queer nightlife here is party-based rather than bar-based: one-off and monthly nights move between venues. YOHOMO's calendar is the most complete listing, and the events on this page draw on it.

    Bathhouses

Three men's bathhouses are open, and all three are listed by The Gay Passport in 2026. Steamworks Toronto at 540 Church is the biggest and is open 24/7. Spa Excess at 105 Carlton, a block from Church, is also open around the clock and runs themed parties. Splash Steam and Sauna at 1610 Dundas Street West is the smaller west-end option: cash only, roughly 11am to 9pm. Oasis Aqualounge on Mutual Street is a mixed, sex-positive club for couples and groups, not a gay sauna. See the Toronto saunas page for details.

    Beaches and cruising

Hanlan's Point Beach on the Toronto Islands is Canada's best-known clothing-optional beach and has had a gay following for decades. City council made the whole beach clothing-optional in June 2023. In 2026 parts of it were closed because of erosion and high lake levels, so check the city's beach page before taking the ferry. Cherry Beach in the Port Lands is the other beach with a queer history.

We don't publish outdoor cruising locations. Public sex is illegal in Canada, and in 2016 a Toronto police operation, Project Marie, ticketed dozens of men in a west-end park, which drew a strong backlash. For cruising, the bathhouses and Black Eagle are the legal and safer choices. Our cruising guide explains more.

    Community, health and history

The history worth knowing: on 5 February 1981 police raided four bathhouses in "Operation Soap" and charged around 300 men. The next night about 3,000 people marched on 52 Division, and the protests fed into what became Pride Toronto. The Alexander Wood statue at Church and Alexander, once called one of Canada's first LGBT monuments, was taken down by the Village BIA in April 2022. ACT, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, closed in March 2026.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • El Convento Rico (750 College) — the Latin drag club closed suddenly on 1 October 2026, after 35 years.
    • Tammy's Wine Bar (Queen West) — closed in January 2026.
    • Glad Day Bookshop — left 499 Church in 2025 and now runs from a temporary home at 32 Lisgar Street (Glad Day Bookshop).
    • WAYLA (Queen East, Leslieville) — Google now lists it as permanently closed.
    • Peaches (Queen West sports bar) — shut in 2025 after a rent dispute.
    • Statlers (487 Church) — closed in January 2019; The Well is in the space now.
    • Fly 2.0 (Gloucester Street) — the big dance club closed in 2019.
    • Striker and The Beaver — both closed in 2020.
    • Club 120 and Remington's — both long gone.
    • The Cellar, Club Toronto (closed 2010) and Bijou — old bathhouses that still turn up in outdated guides.

    Pride and events

Pride Toronto takes over the Village at the end of June. In 2026 the festival weekend ran 25–28 June: the Trans March on Friday, the Dyke March on Saturday and the parade on Sunday afternoon, with Blockorama, the Black queer stage, on the Sunday too. Money has been tight since 2025, when several big sponsors pulled out, and the 2026 festival ran with a smaller footprint. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing; the parade is normally on the last Sunday of June.

Other dates to know: the Inside Out 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival runs for about ten days in late May at TIFF Lightbox, and Halloween on Church fills the Village on 30–31 October, with Church Street closed between Carlton and Gloucester on the 31st (2025 drew more than 80,000 people).

    Practical tips

    • Wellesley station on Line 1 is the Village stop. The UP Express runs from Pearson airport (YYZ) to Union Station in about 25 minutes.
    • Bars stop serving at 2am under Ontario rules, so nights start and finish earlier than in Montreal.
    • Patio season is roughly May to October. From November to April, nightlife moves indoors.
    • Splash is cash only; elsewhere, cards are normal. Tip 15–20% at the bar.
    • Check YOHOMO and the venues' Instagram accounts for parties, which change from week to week.

A few words

Toronto speaks English, but with local shorthand: "the Village" means Church-Wellesley; the TTC runs the subway, streetcars and buses; Canadians write 2SLGBTQI+, with "2S" for Two-Spirit Indigenous people; and "the 6ix" is a nickname for the city itself.
