Last verified: October 2026. Miami Beach has one gay hotel. That is Hotel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road, open since 2014, with a gay bar and the island's only men's sauna downstairs. AxelBeach, the adults-only LGBTQ hotel at 1500 Collins Avenue, closed for good on 31 March 2025. There is no men-only hotel and no clothing-optional guesthouse on the island (for those, gay men drive about an hour north to Fort Lauderdale). Everything else is mainstream, and in South Beach that is not a problem: hotels between 5th and 23rd Streets have been checking in male couples for forty years without blinking. What changes the trip is which block you sleep on. The bars sit in a tight knot around Washington Avenue and 11th–12th Streets, the gay beach is two blocks east at 12th Street, and the one gay hotel is a 25-minute walk away on the far side of Lincoln Road. This guide covers where to sleep in real walking minutes, the 2026 closures and reopenings (W South Beach shut in August, the Delano came back in May), the 14% tax and resort fees, Winter Party and Pride 2027, and getting home at 3 am.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Twist (Washington Ave & 11th St) | Walk to the 12th Street gay beach | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The gay hotel | Hotel Gaythering | 24–26 min | 25–27 min | Gay men who want a bar and a sauna in the building and other gay guests at breakfast. Watch-out: compact rooms, and it sits at the quiet west end of Lincoln Road, nowhere near the sand. |
| On the strip | Dream South Beach, The Betsy | 1 min (Dream), 9–10 min (Betsy) | 4–5 min | Anyone who wants to walk home from Twist and be on the gay beach before 11. Watch-out: weekend street noise around Washington and Ocean Drive. Ask for a high floor away from the street. |
| Lincoln Road to 18th Street | Delano, The Catalina | 19–22 min | 14–17 min | Winter Party guests (the host hotel is on this stretch) and pool people. Watch-out: the Catalina is a party hotel, and the Delano reopened in 2026 at top-tier prices. |
| South of Fifth, quieter | The Savoy, The Meridian | 14–16 min | 18–21 min | Couples who want a pool and sleep but still plan to walk to the bars. Watch-out: the walk back up Washington is fine, but most people take a car after 2 am. |
| Luxury north of 20th | The Setai, 1 Hotel South Beach | 26–28 min (Setai), 33–35 min (1 Hotel) | 22–23 min, 28–30 min | Spa-and-pool trips with a couple of big nights out. Watch-out: every night out ends with an Uber. |
| Mid-Beach resorts | The Miami Beach EDITION, Faena, Eden Roc | 44 min to 70 min. Take a 10–20 min ride | 39 min to 66 min | Quiet sand, big pools, a resort holiday with a night or two in South Beach. Watch-out: you are out of the gay zone entirely. Eden Roc fills with conferences and weddings. |
| Apartment-style, far north | My Gay Suites | About 95 min on foot, so a 15–25 min ride | About 90 min on foot | Longer stays that need a kitchen. Watch-out: these are rental units in a condo tower, not a gay hotel. Confirm exactly what you are booking. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
South Beach is flat and on a grid, so walking times are honest here. The gay zone is small. Twist is at 1057 Washington Avenue, Palace faces the beach at 1052 Ocean Drive, Lust Lounge opened in July 2025 on the corner of 12th Street and Washington, and the LGBT Visitor Center is in Old City Hall at 1130 Washington. All four sit inside two blocks. Kill Your Idol is on Española Way (between 14th and 15th) and Revenge, home of the Diva Royale drag show, is at 1532 Washington. The rainbow lifeguard tower marks the gay beach at Ocean Drive and 12th. Bar Gaythering and the sauna are the outlier, about 1.5 km west on Lincoln Road.
The walkable zone runs between Ocean Drive and Meridian Avenue, from about 5th Street to 17th Street. If your hotel is within that box you will walk everywhere except perhaps Gaythering. North of 17th Street on Collins you are in hotel-and-resort country, and south of 5th you are in the quieter, richer South of Fifth (locals say SoFi).

Washington Avenue and Collins, 10th to 15th Street: the gay core
Dream South Beach at 1111 Collins Avenue is the closest hotel in our listings to the bars: 45 m from Twist, which is a 1-minute walk, and 4–5 minutes to the 12th Street beach. Palace is a 1–2 minute stroll. It is a mainstream design hotel with a rooftop pool. The trade-off is noise. Washington Avenue on a Saturday is loud until Twist closes at 5 am, so ask for a room on the Collins side and a high floor.
The Betsy at 1440 Ocean Drive sits at the northern, calmer end of the Art Deco strip. It is 2 minutes from Kill Your Idol, 4–5 minutes from the rainbow tower and 9–10 minutes from Twist. It has an arts programme rather than a DJ booth, which makes it the grown-up choice on the beachfront. Ocean Drive itself is tourist-heavy, but by 3 am the stretch north of 14th Street is quiet.
At 3 am this zone is the safest place on the island to be on foot. It is lit, busy and heavily policed. The thing to watch is drunk crowds on Ocean Drive and Washington around 2–4 am on weekends, not anything aimed at gay men.
Lincoln Road and the west side: Gaythering
Hotel Gaythering is at 1409 Lincoln Road, in a 1958 MiMo building at the bay end of the pedestrian mall, close to Alton Road. Its own bar and the sauna are in the building. Everything else is a walk: about 21–23 minutes to Kill Your Idol, 24–26 minutes to Twist and 25–27 minutes to the beach. The best route at night is east along the Lincoln Road mall, which is lit and has people on it until late, then south down Washington. Do not cut through Flamingo Park after dark. Plenty of guests rent a bike or take a 6–8 minute ride to the beach. The streets around the hotel are residential and quiet, which is a plus for sleep.

Collins Avenue, 16th to 20th Street: pools and the Winter Party base
This is the classic big-hotel stretch north of Lincoln Road. The Delano at 1685 Collins reopened on 1 May 2026 after six years shut. It is now part of Ennismore/Accor, with 171 rooms and its long pool and garden restored. Launch rates were reported from about US$734 a night. It is 14–15 minutes to the gay beach and 19–20 minutes to Twist. The Catalina at 1732 Collins is the party option: pools, a bar and groups out late, 16–17 minutes to the beach and 20–22 to Twist. The National Hotel (1677 Collins Avenue) is not in our listings, but it matters, because it is the Winter Party host hotel for 2027. Late at night Collins is well lit and taxis cruise it. Use Collins or Washington for the walk home rather than the quieter avenues west of them.
South of Fifth: quiet with a walk
The Savoy at 425 Ocean Drive backs onto the beach and has suite-style rooms and its own pool deck. It is 14–15 minutes to Twist and 18–19 minutes to the rainbow tower along the sand or Ocean Drive. The Meridian at 418 Meridian Avenue is a small, well-reviewed property on a residential street, 14–16 minutes from Twist. The area empties after midnight apart from the restaurants. It is safe, but it is dull at 3 am. Walking back down Washington is fine, while Meridian and Euclid feel deserted, so take a car if you are alone and drunk.

North of 20th and Mid-Beach: resorts with a ride
The Setai (2001 Collins, three oceanfront pools) is 22–23 minutes on foot to 12th Street. 1 Hotel South Beach (2341 Collins) is 28–30. Further up, The Miami Beach EDITION (2901 Collins), Faena (3201 Collins) and Eden Roc (4525 Collins) are 40–70 minutes away on foot, which in practice means a 10–20 minute Uber each way. W South Beach (2201 Collins) closed on 20 August 2026 to become a Waldorf Astoria. Its reopening has been announced for winter 2027, so ignore any OTA listing still selling it. The boardwalk behind these hotels is pleasant by day and empty at night.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
Hotel Gaythering is the only hotel on Miami Beach run for gay guests in 2026. Its own listings describe it as catering to gay men while also calling itself a "gay hotel, all adults welcome", so it is gay-oriented and adults-only, not men-only. Reviews from spring 2026 confirm it is operating normally, and plenty of guests use it as a pre- or post-cruise stop. Rooms are small. People book it for the social side: Bar Gaythering in the lobby has something on most nights, including karaoke, bingo and trivia.
Gaythering Sauna, on the ground floor, is men only, 21 and over, and you need government ID. It is clothing-optional and small. Third-party listings in 2026 give opening hours of 2 pm to 2 am daily and entry of about US$25 for non-guests, free for hotel guests. Confirm the hours before you plan a night around them. The sauna is the closest thing on the island to a day pass at a gay hotel. The only other gay sauna in the area is Club Aqua, on Coral Way in Miami proper.
Who left. AxelBeach Miami (1500 Collins Avenue) opened in January 2020 as the Spanish Axel group's "hetero-friendly" adults-only hotel and closed permanently on 31 March 2025. The building is slated for redevelopment. At least one big OTA was still showing an AxelBeach listing in 2026, so do not book it. The Raleigh (1775 Collins) has been closed since 2017. The Deauville in North Beach was imploded in November 2022. The old Delano crowd may like knowing the hotel is back, but it now has a mainstream luxury clientele.
What is not here. Miami Beach has no men-only resort and no clothing-optional guesthouse. Fort Lauderdale, roughly an hour's drive north, has the region's cluster of men-only, clothing-optional guesthouses. Some visitors split a trip between the two. My Gay Suites at 5445 Collins is marketed to LGBTQ travellers, but it is a travel agency renting units in a large condo tower, not a gay hotel with a bar or shared spaces. Check whether you are getting a hotel room or a private condo, and who you call at midnight if something breaks.

Booking rules that bite
- Tax is 14% on the room. That breaks down as 6% Florida sales tax, 1% Miami-Dade surtax, 3% county Convention Development Tax and 4% Miami Beach Resort Tax. Food and drink in restaurants and bars also carry a 2% city resort tax on top of sales tax. Neither tax is in the headline rate.
- Resort fees. Many South Beach hotels add a nightly "resort" or "destination" fee for beach chairs, Wi-Fi and the like. Since May 2025 US federal rules require hotels and OTAs to show the total price including mandatory fees up front, but taxes are still added later. Compare total prices, not headline rates.
- Visitors and ID. US hotels do not charge joiner fees and there is no police registration. Expect ID at check-in for the person on the booking. Some South Beach hotels ask late-night visitors to show ID at the desk or keep non-registered guests off the pool deck. The fix is easy: if you are travelling as two, book two guests. If you meet someone, he is your guest, and nobody at a mainstream hotel here will care.
- Age. Many South Beach hotels require the person checking in to be 21 or older, and Gaythering is adults-only. Under-21s should read the policy before booking.
- Deposits. Expect a credit-card hold for incidentals on top of the room. Debit-card holds can take days to release. Valet parking is the other hidden cost on Collins and Ocean Drive, so confirm the nightly rate before you hire a car.
- Event weekends. For Winter Party, Pride and Art Basel, expect minimum stays, non-refundable rates and prices several times the shoulder-season rate. Book a refundable rate early and rebook if prices fall.
- Short-term rentals. Miami Beach restricts holiday rentals in most residential areas and fines heavily. A condo rental should be in a building where short stays are legal. Ask the host to confirm, in writing.
- Ghost listings. Closed hotels (AxelBeach, W South Beach, the Raleigh) still turn up in search results and old guides. Check the hotel's own site is taking bookings for your dates.
- Spring break (March). The city eased some of its harshest rules in 2026 but kept a heavy police presence. Arrests were reported down 14% from 2 to 23 March 2026. Expect checkpoints and crowds on Ocean Drive, especially if Winter Party lands on a spring-break weekend.
- Art Basel Miami Beach (early December). This is not a gay event, but it is the most expensive week of the year for South Beach hotels. Confirm the 2026 dates with the organiser before booking anything in early December.
- White Party (Thanksgiving), Aqua Girl and Sizzle Miami (late spring). I could not confirm 2026–2027 dates or venues for these. Check the organisers' own channels before booking around them.
- Hurricane season (June to November) brings the year's lowest rates. Buy travel insurance that covers storms.
- Midway Specialty Care Center has a Miami Beach clinic. It is a nonprofit infectious-disease practice offering PrEP, HIV care and STI testing.
- The University of Miami's RAPID Wellness Clinic has a Miami Beach site focused on fast PrEP and PEP access (305-243-2584).
- Pridelines, the LGBTQ community organisation, runs a Miami Beach satellite and offers PrEP and PEP.
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Winter Party Festival: 5–8 March 2027
Winter Party is the National LGBTQ Task Force's circuit fundraiser, in its 34th year in 2027. The organisers have confirmed that the host hotel and the Saturday pool party (6 March 2027) return to The National Hotel at 1677 Collins Avenue. A Sunday beach party is billed, so check the location on your ticket. Book on Collins between Lincoln Road and 18th Street (Delano, Catalina) to be steps from the pool party, or near 12th Street (Dream, The Betsy) to be close to the beach and Twist. Rooms near the National go first. Book by December, and expect early March prices to be inflated anyway, because it is peak season and overlaps with spring break. The 2026 edition ran 26 February to 2 March 2026.
Miami Beach Pride: 10–11 April 2027
Miami Beach Pride runs in April to stay in the dry season. The two-day festival is in Lummus Park on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April 2027 from noon, and the parade runs down Ocean Drive on Sunday 11 April. The 2026 programme ran as a longer series of events from 2 to 12 April, so expect parties around the core weekend. Ocean Drive closes to traffic for the parade. That makes The Betsy, The Savoy and Dream the front-row choices, and it also means taxis cannot reach those doors on parade day. Book by January.

Other dates to know
Getting back at 3 am
From Miami International Airport (MIA). Route 150, the Miami Beach Airport Express, leaves from the bus bays at the MIA Metrorail station. It runs about every 30 minutes from roughly 6 am to 11 pm daily, stopping along Miami Beach from 1st to 44th Street. The fare was US$2.25 on recent schedules, payable by EASY Card or contactless, so confirm on board. It takes 45–60 minutes. Uber and Lyft take 25–40 minutes depending on the causeway traffic. Fares vary with demand and were not verified, so check the app. Taxis from MIA charge a flat zone fare to Miami Beach, so check the posted rate at the rank. From Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL), allow 45–75 minutes by car.
From the bars. Twist is open from 3 pm to 5 am daily, so the night ends late. Uber and Lyft both work well in South Beach, and pickups on Washington or Collins are quick. Avoid trying to get picked up on Ocean Drive on a busy night. Miami Beach's free trolleys and city buses are not an overnight service, so do not count on them after midnight. Citi Bike docks are spread across South Beach and work well for the Gaythering-to-beach run in daylight.
Walking safety by street. Washington Avenue from 10th to 15th Street and Collins Avenue up to 18th are lit, busy and patrolled all night. Lincoln Road mall is the safe east-west route to Gaythering. Flamingo Park (Meridian to Michigan Avenue, 11th to 15th Street) is a long-standing cruising ground, but after dark it is not a shortcut home. Walk around it. The residential avenues west of Washington (Drexel, Pennsylvania, Euclid, Meridian) are quiet and usually fine, but they are empty at 3 am. Ocean Drive is loud, with the occasional drunk confrontation, between 2 and 4 am on weekends.

Health, safety and the law
Legal position. Same-sex relationships and marriage are legal across the US, and federal law bars employment discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity. Miami Beach is one of the most gay-comfortable cities in the South, and hotels, bars and beaches present no issues. Florida's state politics are more conservative than the city's. The most visible effect is on trans issues. Florida's 2023 restroom law covers government-owned buildings, not private hotels or bars.
PEP, PrEP and testing. PEP has to start within 72 hours. Out of hours, go to the emergency department at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Alton Road, Miami Beach's main hospital. For PrEP, testing and PEP follow-up, try these:
Confirm addresses and walk-in hours by phone. The LGBT Visitor Center at 1130 Washington Avenue can point you to the nearest option.
App dates. In July 2026 the FBI's Miami field office warned of a rise in armed robberies set up through dating apps. A previous federal case involved a Miami man who lured gay men through Grindr into robberies and kidnappings. Here is the rule. Meet first in a bar (Twist's front bar or Gaythering both work). Send your own location, not his. Never get into a car to go to a second address. Tell the front desk if you are expecting someone.
Drugs. Possession of most controlled substances, including the chemsex staples, is a felony in Florida. Recreational cannabis is still illegal. The 2024 legalisation amendment won a majority but missed the 60% it needed. Hotels are non-smoking, and smoking or vaping cannabis in a room will trigger a cleaning fee, often several hundred dollars, so read the policy. Miami Beach bans smoking on its beaches and in parks, and bans alcohol on the beach.
Beaches. The 12th Street beach is a swimsuit beach. Nudity is illegal there and enforced. The legal clothing-optional sand is at Haulover Beach, north of Bal Harbour, which takes 25–35 minutes by car from South Beach. Its northern section has long been the gay end, but check the park's current rules and parking before you go.
Three picks

Budget: Hotel Gaythering
Hotel Gaythering gives you the island's only gay hotel, with free entry to its men's sauna (about US$25 for everyone else) and a gay bar in the lobby. Rooms are small and the beach is a bike ride away. Rates vary sharply by season, so compare the total price with tax against mainstream options.
Mid-range: Dream South Beach
Dream South Beach is 1 minute from Twist, 1–2 from Palace and 4–5 from the rainbow tower. You can walk home from anywhere in the gay zone in under 3 minutes. Book a high floor on the Collins side to blunt the Washington Avenue noise.

Splurge: Delano
The Delano reopened in May 2026 with launch rates from about US$734. Its long pool and garden were the gay crowd's lounge in the 1990s. It is 14–15 minutes to 12th Street and next door to the Winter Party host hotel. If you would rather have three ocean pools and a proper spa, The Setai is the alternative, at 22–23 minutes from the gay beach.
Frequently asked

Is Hotel Gaythering men-only?
No. It is aimed at gay men but says all adults are welcome. The sauna on the ground floor is men only, 21 and over, with ID required.
Is there still an Axel hotel in Miami Beach?
No. AxelBeach Miami at 1500 Collins Avenue closed permanently on 31 March 2025. Hotel Gaythering is now the island's only gay hotel.

Which hotel is closest to Twist and the gay bars?
Dream South Beach at 1111 Collins Avenue, 45 m from Twist, which is a 1-minute walk. The Betsy on Ocean Drive is 2 minutes from Kill Your Idol and 9–10 from Twist.
Is there a gay beach in Miami Beach?
Yes. It is the stretch opposite 12th Street and Ocean Drive, marked by a rainbow lifeguard tower, and it is a swimsuit beach. The clothing-optional option is Haulover Beach, 25–35 minutes north by car.

How much is hotel tax in Miami Beach?
14% on the room rate: 6% state, 1% county surtax, 3% Convention Development Tax and 4% Miami Beach Resort Tax. Resort fees are extra but must now be included in the displayed total.
