The honest summary: Miami Beach (82,890 people at the 2020 Census) is still one of America's best-known gay beach towns, but the bar scene is smaller than its reputation. In 2026 the dedicated gay venues come down to a handful within a few blocks of each other in South Beach: Twist, Palace, Bar Gaythering, the newer Lust Lounge and the men-only Gaythering men's sauna, plus the gay beach at 12th Street. Score, Nathan's and the AxelBeach hotel have all closed in the last few years. What hasn't shrunk is the calendar: Winter Party Festival in late winter and Miami Beach Pride in April still pull huge crowds.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Florida since 6 January 2015, and Miami Beach has had its own human rights ordinance and a domestic partner registry for years (it scored 100 on the HRC Municipal Equality Index in 2025). But state law has moved the other way: since 2023 Florida restricts which bathrooms trans people can use in government buildings, including airports, and its law on "adult live performances" in front of minors became enforceable again in August 2026 after an appeals court ruling.
South Beach, the southern end of the island below about 23rd Street, is where every current source puts the gay scene. Within it, three areas matter. Washington Avenue between 10th and 14th Streets has Twist and Lust Lounge. Ocean Drive and 12th Street have Palace and the gay beach. Lincoln Road, the pedestrian mall further north, has Hotel Gaythering with its bar and sauna at the quiet west end. All of it is walkable: from Twist to Hotel Gaythering is about 15 minutes on foot.
Mid-Beach and North Beach have big hotels and quieter beaches but no gay bars. Flamingo Park, just west of Washington Avenue, had a long cruising reputation that Miami New Times says has faded. The rest of the region's scene is on the mainland: Wynwood and Little Havana in Miami, and Wilton Manors near Fort Lauderdale, about 45 minutes north.
Bars and clubs
Twist (1057 Washington Avenue) has been the anchor since 1993: seven bars and three dance floors over two levels, no cover, open every day from 3pm to 5am. Thursday is Latin night and CC Glitzer hosts a drag show at midnight on Fridays.
Palace (1052 Ocean Drive) has been doing drag on Ocean Drive since 1988. The brunch shows (Monday at noon, Friday to Sunday at 11am and 2pm, about $60) are the busiest thing in town on weekends, and dinner shows run nightly. The crowd is very mixed, with plenty of straight birthday groups.
Bar Gaythering is the lobby bar of Hotel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road: a proper neighbourhood gay bar with a 5pm to 8pm happy hour, karaoke on Monday, trivia on Wednesday, bingo on Thursday, the Bears & Hares night on Friday and a Sunday T-Dance.
Lust Lounge at 12th Street and Washington Avenue is LGBTQ-owned and opened in July 2025 as the first venue in the city's Pop-Up Venue Program; by day it's Wanderlust Café. Check its Instagram before going, as the programme changes. Kill Your Idol on Española Way isn't a gay bar but runs drag Fridays and Gender Blender, a monthly queer punk party.
For a ticketed show, Diva Royale stages celebrity-impersonation drag dinners at Revenge Nightclub on Washington Avenue, aimed mostly at bachelorette parties. More detail is in our Miami Beach gay bars guide.
The Gaythering men's sauna inside Hotel Gaythering is the only gay sauna on the island: men only, 21 and over, open daily from 3pm, with a jacuzzi, a cedar dry sauna and private spaces. A day pass is $25 plus tax, or $15 on Tuesdays and from 3pm to 5pm, and hotel guests get in free. Club Aqua, the other South Florida bathhouse people mention, is on Coral Way in mainland Miami.
We don't publish directions to outdoor cruising spots. Sex in public is illegal in Florida, and Miami Beach police have a long history of targeting gay men around Flamingo Park. The sauna and the apps are the safer options.
12th Street Beach, across Ocean Drive from 12th Street, is the gay beach. Look for the rainbow-painted lifeguard tower designed by architect William Lane. It's a public beach with lifeguards and no fee, it's busiest on weekend afternoons, and it hosts the Winter Party beach party and the Pride festival next door in Lummus Park. It isn't clothing-optional.
Haulover Beach, about 30 minutes north in Haulover Park beyond Bal Harbour, is technically outside Miami Beach city limits. Its northern third, between lifeguard towers 12 and 16, is a legal clothing-optional beach, and gay men gather at the far north end. Parking is paid, and the dunes are patrolled.
Pride and events
Miami Beach Pride is held in April, not June, to catch the dry season. The 2026 edition, the 18th, ran from 2 to 12 April, with the free festival in Lummus Park on 11 and 12 April and the parade along Ocean Drive, from 5th to 14th Street, at noon on Sunday 12 April. For 2027 the Greater Miami tourism board lists the festival for 10 and 11 April, and the organisers have announced their 19th festival and parade for that weekend. They describe it as drawing more than 170,000 people; that's their own figure.
The Winter Party Festival, run by the National LGBTQ Task Force as a fundraiser, is the big circuit weekend: its 33rd edition ran from 26 February to 2 March 2026, and the 2027 edition is set for 5 to 8 March, with the Sunday beach party at 12th Street. Other regular dates: SweetHeat Miami for queer women in May (12 to 18 May in 2026, split between South Beach and the mainland), Sizzle Miami over Memorial Day weekend, and URGE's Thanksgiving weekend of parties, held 27 to 30 November 2026 at venues in Miami and Miami Beach. Gay8, often listed for Miami Beach, is in Little Havana on the mainland. Our Miami Beach events page lists the weekly drag brunches and bar nights.
Where to stay
Hotel Gaythering is the gay hotel, with the bar and sauna downstairs. The other big LGBTQ hotel, AxelBeach on Collins Avenue, closed on 31 March 2025. Most visitors stay in the mainstream Art Deco and design hotels between 5th and 23rd Streets; The Betsy on Ocean Drive is a short walk from 12th Street. The W South Beach closed in August 2026 for conversion to a Waldorf Astoria and isn't due back until 2027. See the Miami Beach hotels list.
Miami International Airport (MIA) is about 16 to 19 km from South Beach, roughly 25 minutes by taxi outside rush hour. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is about 32 km north.
South Beach is flat and walkable, and the city runs a free trolley along the main avenues. Rideshares are easy; parking is expensive and scarce on weekends.
Remember that Florida's bathroom law covers airports, so trans travellers should be aware of it at MIA and FLL.
Practical tips
High season runs from December to April; Winter Party and Pride weekends sell out and push hotel prices up sharply.
Summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
Bars here run late: Twist is open until 5am. Ocean Drive gets very crowded during spring break in March, when the city has used curfews and extra policing in recent years.
The LGBT Visitor Center in the Old City Hall at 1130 Washington Avenue has maps and local listings; it's run by the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber's foundation.
A bit of history
South Beach's gay boom came in the late 1980s and 1990s, when gay residents and business owners helped revive the run-down Art Deco district. The Warsaw Ballroom on Collins Avenue at Española Way (1989 to 1999) was the era's famous club, and Twist opened in 1993. Gianni Versace bought his Ocean Drive mansion in 1992 and was murdered outside it on 15 July 1997. Much earlier, Miami Beach had a gay bar called the Stonewall at 211 22nd Street in the early 1970s; it burned down in 1974.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Score (1437 Washington Avenue) and its companion club Trade: closed. Time Out already listed Score as gone in April 2024.
Nathan's Beach Club (1216 Washington Avenue): closed in 2025. Its host Nathan Paul Smith has since run nights at Lust.
AxelBeach Miami (1500 Collins Avenue): the gay hotel closed on 31 March 2025 and the site is due for redevelopment.
Foxhole (14th Court): hosted gay nights in 2025, but it now operates as a general speakeasy, not a gay bar.
Club Boi: a party in North Miami, not a Miami Beach venue.
Mova: closed. Time Out listed it among closed venues in April 2024.
A few words of Spanish
Spanish is as common as English in Miami Beach. Ambiente is the Latin American word for the gay scene. "¿Dónde está la playa gay?" asks for the gay beach. Show de drag and noche latina are what you'll see on bar flyers, and gracias goes a long way.

FAQ
Is there still a gay scene in South Beach?
Yes, but it's compact. Twist, Palace, Bar Gaythering and Lust Lounge are all within about 15 minutes' walk of each other, and the 12th Street beach is right by Palace. Several well-known places, including Score and Nathan's, have closed.
When is Miami Beach Pride 2027?
The festival is listed for 10 and 11 April 2027 in Lummus Park, with the parade on Ocean Drive that weekend. Check miamibeachpride.com for the final schedule.
Is there a gay sauna in Miami Beach?
One: the men-only sauna in Hotel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road, open daily from 3pm. Club Aqua is on the mainland.
Its clothing-optional section is mixed, and gay men gather at the far north end. It's in Haulover Park north of Bal Harbour, about 30 minutes from South Beach.
Is Miami Beach safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
The city itself is very gay-friendly, but Florida state law restricts bathroom use for trans people in government buildings, including airports. Usual big-resort precautions apply on crowded nights on Ocean Drive.
