The honest picture

The Republic of the Congo — Congo-Brazzaville, not to be confused with the DRC across the river — never criminalized adult same-sex relations. Two caveats carry the real story: the law sets the same-sex age of consent at 21, and legality has bought little social peace — the Brazzaville organization Cœur Arc-en-ciel (founded 2016), which documents violence against the community, found that over half of LGBTQ respondents in the capital experienced discrimination or violence in a single year. No venues, no events, no public scene: private networks and one brave health-and-rights organization.

For the traveler

Brazzaville is calmer than its reputation — a riverfront capital with a French-provincial rhythm, the Basilique Sainte-Anne's green-tiled glory, and Kinshasa's skyline across the world's deepest river. Total discretion is the rule: no public affection, faceless app profiles are the local norm (respect the 21+ line absolutely), and police checkpoints argue for clean phones as standard hygiene.

Practical notes

CFA francs, French essential, yellow-fever certificate required. The Congo's real wonders are north — Odzala's gorillas, the Sangha rainforest. Go as a naturalist; keep your private life private, as every local queer person must.
