Bear Essentials

Bear Essentials is the annual festival of Harbour City Bears, Sydney's social club for bears and their admirers, which has been running since 1996. The first Bear Essentials was in 1997, and it is timed to Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, running about two weeks from Fair Day to the day after the parade.

The 30th edition, BE30, ran from 15 February to 1 March 2026 under the theme "Cruising". The programme mixed free and ticketed events: Fair Day in Victoria Park, Bearaoke and Furry Fridays at the Kings Cross Hotel, a harbour cruise to Obelisk Beach, a pool party at Cook + Phillip Park, an Underbear party at Aura, and a night at Sauna X and an evening at Elizabeth Bay House, both of which sold out with waitlists. The club marched in the Mardi Gras parade on 28 February and closed with Farewell Bears at the Town Hall Hotel on 1 March.

The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked. They follow the Mardi Gras calendar, so expect mid-February to early March, and book the sauna and boat events early.
