Chennai Rainbow Pride
About This Event
Chennai Rainbow Pride, Tamil Nadu's pride march, has been going strong since 2009, held every last Sunday of June - except for 2020 and 2021, when COVID got in the way. The Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition, a group of queer, trans, and allied collectives, organises the event. Orinam, one of the coalition's members, handles the website.
It kicks off at 3:30pm from the front gate of Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, following a police-allotted route. Don't expect it to be wheelchair-friendly, though - organisers warn that it's not easy to navigate. If you need help, contact them 7 to 10 days ahead and they'll arrange accessible cars. No registration, no ticket required - just show up.
The rest of June is packed with cultural evenings, workshops, and press meets. This isn't just a celebration - it's a political statement. In 2025, banners called for marriage and adoption rights, healthcare access, and anti-discrimination laws. Trans and Tamil-language voices take centre stage.
The 17th march, on 29 June 2025, drew over 10,000 people, according to The News Minute. The 2026 march was set for 28 June, pending police permission. We couldn't find any solid post-event coverage, and the 2027 date hadn't been announced when we checked.
