Tokyo Pride
About This Event
Tokyo Pride is Japan's largest LGBTQ+ event, run by the nonprofit Tokyo Rainbow Pride. Until 2024 the event carried that name and was held around Golden Week in late April. In 2025 it was renamed Tokyo Pride and moved to June to line up with Pride Month. It has a sharp political edge: Japan still has no same-sex marriage, and the 2026 edition took place while a string of marriage-equality lawsuits waited on the Supreme Court.
There are two parts. The Pride Festival fills the Event Plaza and outdoor stage of Yoyogi Park over a weekend and is free to enter. It is booth-heavy: 217 companies, embassies and community groups exhibited in 2026, and the corporate presence can make parts of it feel like a trade fair. The stage lineup in 2026 included AI and SIRUP. The parade runs on the Sunday, a roughly 3km route through Shibuya and Harajuku; in 2026 about 15,000 people marched in 60 groups. Watching from the pavement is open to anyone, but walking requires registering with a group in advance.
Yoyogi Park is next to JR Harajuku Station and Yoyogi-koen on the Chiyoda line. Early June is the edge of the rainy season, so expect humidity, and plan for weather: in 2024 the first festival day was cancelled because of strong winds. Most people head to Shinjuku Ni-chome afterwards, where the bars run their own Pride weekend nights.
The last edition, the 15th, was held on 6 and 7 June 2026 under the theme 'a future opened by diversity and equality' (in Japanese, tayousei to byoudou ga hiraku mirai). Organizers reported about 270,000 festival visitors over the two days. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked; since the move, the festival has fallen on the first full weekend of June.
