About this place GC Bar

GC Bar is the closest thing Hanoi has to a dedicated gay bar in the traditional sense: an openly identified venue on Au Trieu, the narrow street that runs beside the nineteenth-century St. Joseph's Cathedral in the Old Quarter, attracting a crowd that is predominantly but not exclusively gay and providing a space where the community can be visible and comfortable without the mixed-venue codes that govern much of Hanoi's LGBTQ+ social life. The location is central and easily findable ? Au Trieu is one of the Old Quarter streets most visitors walk as a matter of course, alongside the cafes and boutique shops that make this part of Hanoi so attractive. The bar occupies a narrow shophouse in the characteristic Old Quarter style, with the ground floor opening directly onto the lane and the space extending into two floors above. The furniture is simple, the lighting is warm, and the overall vibe is of a neighborhood bar that happens to have a gay identity rather than a venue that is making a statement. The crowd during the week is predominantly local ? Vietnamese gay men and their friends, regulars who treat the bar as their living room away from home, and the kind of friendly regulars who will make a first-time visitor feel like they've stumbled into a good party rather than an exclusive club. Weekends bring more international visitors, particularly in the tourist-heavy periods when the Old Quarter fills up. The atmosphere remains consistent: this is not a nightclub, it is a bar, and the pleasures are the pleasures of bar life ? good conversation, cold drinks, and the relief of being somewhere you are unreservedly welcome. Themed evenings ? game nights, drag events, karaoke sessions ? appear on the calendar periodically and are announced via the bar's social media. VietPride week in August is the busiest time, when the bar functions as a community hub for the week's events and gatherings.

We were the only guests and the only sounds came from the staff talking. No music.

My shop should change the music. Everyone says the music is boring and doesn't allow for dancing, and I feel the same way 🤣 I've been there several times and always had to turn around and go somewhere else.

I stopped by during my trip to Hanoi, and the staff were friendly and it was great haha. I hope they get more customers.

This is the oldest and most iconic LGBT bar in Hanoi's Old Quarter. It's packed with Westerners, and has an open, friendly vibe. Tip: Visit after 10 PM to experience the explosive music and order a super-strong Gin Tonic.
