Yes — same-sex marriage is legal in Austria. See the Legal Status panel on this page for the specifics. Austria arrived at full equality late but completely. Same-sex relations were decriminalised in 1971, registered partnerships came in 2010, and same-sex marriage has been available since 1 January 2019 after a Constitutional Court ruling. Joint adoption has been legal since 2016 and step-child adoption since 2013. Anti-discrimination law covers employment since 2004 and goods and services nationwide since 2017; hate speech on grounds of sexual orientation is a criminal offence. Legal gender change has not required surgery since 2009, and a third gender option has existed since 2018. Conversion therapy is not yet banned in law, despite a 2019 parliamentary resolution. Gay and bisexual men have been able to donate blood on equal terms since 2022. Public support for same-sex marriage sits around two-thirds. Vienna has a large, confident scene concentrated around the Naschmarkt and the 6th district, and hosts one of Europe's biggest Pride parades in June. Smaller cities and rural areas are quieter but not hostile.
