Vienna's gay bar scene doesn't clump together like Berlin's Schöneberg or Amsterdam's Reguliersdwarsstraat. Instead, you'll find places spread across the 6th and 7th districts, with some outliers. This means more walking, but also that bars have distinct personalities instead of all fighting for the same crowd.
The 6th district: Mariahilf
Mariahilf has the most gay venues. Most nights out start here. The bars fan out from the Naschmarkt. Some are old-school Viennese cafe-bars: comfortable, quiet, places where people linger. Others are more nightlife-focused, with DJs from midnight.
The Eagle Vienna is the main leather and cruise bar. It has a local, regular crowd and a particular vibe that's more about the scene than about welcoming first-timers. It's not unwelcoming, just focused. Mango Bar is also on the cruise end of things.
The 7th district: Neubau
Neubau is next to Mariahilf. It feels younger, more design-conscious. Some bars here are gay-friendly rather than strictly gay — mixed crowds, no strong scene identity. Check them out if you want to move beyond the core area.
Cafe Berg (Alsergrund)
Cafe Berg on Berggasse in the 9th district has been around long enough to be an institution. It's a gay cafe with a bookshop. It draws a different crowd from the Mariahilf bars: intellectual, neighborhood regulars, less nightlife-oriented. Good for daytime or early evening. The book selection is actually good if you read German or want English LGBTQ+ titles.
Types of venue
Vienna's gay bars fall roughly into: cafe-bars (comfortable, quiet, open during the day), leather and cruise bars (Eagle Vienna, Mango Bar), and club-bars (which turn into nightclubs late in the evening). The city doesn't have a huge commercial dance club scene like Berlin, but there are options on weekend nights.
The bars
- — A smart cafe with replicas of original Adolf Loos decor. Klimt, Schiele, and others used to hang out here.
- Cafe Rifugio — Cafe Rifugio is a small gay bar and cafe in Vienna's gay area. They have daily happy hours from 3pm-8pm, with a special-priced drink of the day.
- Cafe Rudiger — Cafe Rudiger is a gay ‘hustler’ bar that leaves little to the imagination.
- Cafe-Bar CHERI — CHERI is a small gay bar and cafe in Vienna's gay district, mostly attracting locals.
- City Bar Vienna — This stylish, modern gay bar in Vienna aims for a pleasant atmosphere, good cocktails, music, and specials. It's a place for everyone, explicitly "100% straight friendly."
- Club Auslage — BAR / CLUB / EXHIBITION. You'll find emerging artists, a good sound system, and fair prices here.
- — A dance club hosting various parties.
- DUAL CLUB — The owners of the well-known bar WIRR in Vienna's 7th district renamed their small underground club. Working with Valence graphic design studio and Zirup architects, they developed a permanent projection mapping installation as the key visual. The new name “Dual” and logo by Valence inspired the mapping objects from Zirup. The name “Dual” shows up in many ways. Two mapping objects are behind the DJ.
- Eagle Bar Vienna — Drink in the front, Play in the Back.
- — Felixx focuses on good ambiance, wines, cocktails, small snacks, and "heart stopping service."
- — Flex night club plays a variety of beats.
- Goldener Spiegel — Goldener Spiegel is an elegantly decorated bar and restaurant serving high-quality vegetarian and Viennese food. It's near Vienna's gay scene and is a popular gay spot for dining, drinking, and cruising. The place is closed.
- HARD ON
- — At Hard On, LMC men meet and play. Bring leather and toys for "hot fun."
- Imperial Madness — In this fast-moving world, where styles mix and clash, people need individuality and "good old values" beyond stereotypes.
- Inside Bar — Inside Bar is a small gay bar near Naschmarkt for mixed ages.
- — Definitely recommended. Went around 5pm and stayed two hours. Easy to get lost, which is part of the fun. Good atmosphere and, surprisingly for a midweek early evening, it was very busy. All ages, but mostly younger.
- Le Swing — Nice club. Friendly and accommodating on a Monday night, even for a transvestite.
- — The boys are young and ready to party. It's in the middle of Vienna's gay district.
- Marea Alta — An interesting bar. They have a downstairs club on weekends. Small and intimate, sometimes for lesbian crowds but not exclusively. Very friendly staff. Good for hanging out and chilling.
Practical notes
Vienna nightlife starts later than in northern European cities. Bars fill up after 10pm. Weekends are busier; midweek crowds are smaller and different. Prices are moderate — cheaper than London or Zurich, more expensive than Prague or Budapest. Cash is useful; not all bars take cards.
