Café Berg

Café Berg occupies a ground-floor premises on Berggasse in the 9th district — the street that is also home to the Sigmund Freud Museum — and has been operating as Vienna's gay bookshop-café since the late 1990s. The format is deceptively simple: a well-stocked LGBTQ+ bookshop at the back, a quality coffee house at the front, and a terrace that operates in warmer months as one of the most pleasant outdoor seating areas in the neighbourhood. The books are carefully curated across gay and lesbian fiction, queer theory, history, biography and art — the range reflects genuine editorial thought rather than the minimal token shelf that most coffee houses might offer. The café itself serves proper Viennese coffee preparations and a food menu that runs from breakfast through to evening snacks. Café Berg is the place in Vienna where the literary, intellectual, and socially engaged dimension of the city's LGBTQ+ community is most clearly in evidence — regular readings, book launches, and discussion events use the space as their natural home. The neighbourhood, adjacent to both the university district and the Alsergrund, produces a crowd that skews educated, engaged, and happily unpretentious.
