About this place Academia Club

Academia Club is one of the established clubs within Split's Diocletian's Palace area — a late-night venue with a gay-friendly atmosphere and regular LGBTQ+-welcoming programme that makes it a reliable option for gay travellers seeking nightlife in the Old City. The club operates in the atmospheric narrow lanes of the Palace interior, where the ancient walls provide the backdrop for a contemporary club environment that has been drawing Split's mixed international and local crowd for years. The music programming covers the commercial end of electronic and pop, making Academia accessible to visitors who want club atmosphere without the more specific programming of dedicated gay venues. The crowd is genuinely mixed — international tourists, Split university students, and LGBTQ+ visitors who have been pointed here by the local gay community — and the overall atmosphere is welcoming without requiring the explicit gay-venue designation that Split's more limited scene depends on.

My boyfriend and I went on Tuesday 3rd September 2024 at around 8.45/9pm and left at 9.45ish. Worst experience I’ve had in a bar. I went indoors alone as my boyfriend used the restroom and nobody was at the bar. A man slowly walks over to me and I smiled and politely asked “is it open?”. Buzzcut and tan / khaki T-shirt, I believe. He came directly up to my face, said “as you can see”, with only a hand width away from us, and was staring me up and down and staring at my chest. I genuinely thought he was going to touch me as the bar was fully empty and he stood there like that for 30 seconds or so. I backed away and he eventually went behind the bar. When he went behind the bar, he asked what I wanted and I asked for my beer (which we found out on the online menu cost €4.80) and my cider (€6) and as he poured the beer he stared at me the entire time. When my boyfriend joined me, he suddenly backed off. He asked for €11 (cash only). We paid €11 then looked at the online menu and saw it was obviously meant to be €10.80. My boyfriend went in, asked for a receipt and the bartender paused, shook his head, then gave us the receipt which said €10.80. He hadn’t put our order into the till so as a bartender with many years of experience, I can only assume he was intending to keep the money himself. He then gave us back our 20 cents. Even if it’s 20 cents, there is no reason for us to pay extra to a bartender who gave us a very negative experience to begin with. Hated it and honestly ruined our night. WORST bar I’ve been to full stop. Not to mention relatively poor drinks options and - when we visited - no ambience. We were the only ones sat there. Extremely uncomfortable experience.

Thanks my mate Mate for good company and good times! This is the real deal in Dioclecijaneva Palaca, and a place for more underground vibe. Highly recommended!

Such a good bar! The atmosphere and vibes were great. It is kinda hidden between the walls so not too many people there. It is cash only but prices are very affordable.

This is one of those places where you can still see the locals drinking. It is mot overrun by the tourists only, which makes it charming. The atmosphere is chilled and laid back, despite a small sizes of wine glasses (100ml) but you can always ask for a double as it is quite cheap 😉. The place is not see easy to find so it feels quite rewarding when you get there and you will definitely enjoy that drink

The most amazing bar I have ever been too!!!!! The place was absolutely stunning - really amazing art everything and nothing like I’ve ever seen before. The prices for wine was great also - 40 Kuna for a large wine (a double) which is great considering a small wine in most places is 35-40 kuna. Only downside is that outside there is no music - but inside there is a great DJ playing the best songs but no where to sit inside. If there was music outside this place would be a 10/10, but due to no music this place is an 8/10, but would still highly recommend and loved the place!

2 nights in Split. Tried out a lot of bars- ended up spending both my nights here. Not fancy or pretentious. Well rounded and friendly crowd and great staff. Tomislav knew my order without asking. Great place to have a laugh or just chill in a lovely setting!
