What reviewers say

About this place Il Casolare

Il Casolare has been slinging thin-crust pizzas in Kreuzberg since 1998, just a few steps from Kottbusser Tor. The name means "the cottage," which tells you what to expect: a casual, unfussy place. It’s one of those spots that feels like it’s always been there, a reliable constant in a neighborhood that’s anything but. Kreuzberg has long been Berlin's messy, creative heart, and it's always been a welcoming place for queer communities. Il Casolare fits right in, serving simple Italian food in a laid-back room. You just eat your pizza and relax. Their thin-crust pizzas are lighter than some, which is great if you like that style. If you want something a bit more substantial, ask for extra sauce and oil when you order – they're happy to do it. You’ll find it at Grimmstraße 30. For hours or specials, check their Facebook page.

I've rarely experienced anything like this. After being shown to our table, we had to wait about half an hour before we realized that no one was taking our order. When we brought it up with the waiter a second time, we were directed to another table. There, our order was taken immediately, but the initial impression was misleading. After another 30 minutes, the waiter who had served us came back and said he'd forgotten about us. Shortly after, he said the pizza would be on its way. Another 20 minutes later—after a group of eight people who had arrived about half an hour after us had already finished their pizza—we finally received our food. We also had to wait another 15 minutes to pay. Unfortunately, we couldn't expect any compensation on the final price or even a simple apology. I'm still giving it one star because the pizza tasted good. The crust, however, could be improved. Otherwise, the establishment has a pleasant atmosphere. Anyone coming here in a small group or as a pair should be aware that it's easy to get lost in the crowd, which can lead to long waiting times and problems with service – even on a simple Wednesday.

The food is always great here... Atmosphere: very loud, little space. Always. Service: at our group table: one server was very friendly and cheerful... The second, presumably the manager, was stressed, cleared tables frantically, and snapped at another employee. Doesn't contribute to a pleasant atmosphere...

I ran away when I heard someone in the kitchen say, "Ladies, show us your potatoes." Sleazy.

We had pizza and it was super fast, the service was super friendly, and the pizza was delicious. The corner is lovely, and it's right on Admiral Brucke. Great!

Authentic Italian cuisine, simple but cool atmosphere.
