via Stay22About this place Zur letzten Instanz
Zur letzten Instanz, Berlin's oldest restaurant, sits in a restored medieval building, a short walk from Alexanderplatz. It's the kind of place you go for a taste of German cooking, not just a meal.
The menu leans hard into tradition: Eisbein (pork knuckle), various wurst, and sauerkraut. If you want something sweet, rote Grütze is there. The whole place, with its old stones and dark wood, feels like it’s been there forever—because it mostly has. They're also LGBTQ+ friendly, so everyone's welcome at the table.
You'll want a reservation, especially if you're going at a popular time. And be aware: they only serve non-hot dishes Tuesday through Saturday from 3pm to 6pm. Better to call ahead and check what's on when you plan to go. It's a real piece of Berlin history, serving up hearty German food, and that's exactly what it feels like.

I loved the place and the quality of the food and the service too. The person who was in charge of my table during lunch time (June 18th 2026) was very kind and cared to explain very well about the food and the ingredients. I highly value when the experience is more human and meaningful regardless how busy we get when traveling or working. So thank you
Unfortunately, I was not at all satisfied with my last visit. The Königsberger Klopse (meatballs) tasted good in principle, but the portions were far too small for the price. For what was offered, I feel the price-performance ratio is unacceptable. With a bill of over €160 (for four people), one shouldn't leave hungry. I hope this will be improved, as the dish itself has potential.
We are absolutely thrilled. The atmosphere, the young, super friendly and funny staff, and the incredibly delicious food. It's simply a delight ❤️ We'll be back. Fantastic ☀️🔥
