What reviewers say

Many visitors find Together Gelsenkirchen to be a welcoming place where everyone is accepted, with some specifically mentioning positive interactions with volunteers and the inclusive atmosphere for the LGBTQ+ community. However, a significant complaint from residents is the disruptive behavior of some young people associated with the venue, including public alcohol consumption, littering, and rudeness outside the facility.

About this place together Gelsenkirchen

together is Gelsenkirchen's queer youth cafe and community space, aimed at LGBTQ+ people roughly 14-26 and run under the local AIDS-Hilfe / Lebenslust-Beratungsstelle at Wildenbruchstrasse 13. It hosts drop-in evenings (typically Thursdays and Fridays), a project supporting LGBTI refugees and migrants, and a monthly GE-Gay-Stammtisch. In a city without a dedicated gay bar, together is the anchor of local queer life and the first point of contact for advice and connection.

The idea behind this facility is good in principle... however, the young people and their supervisors gather at other addresses. There, they smoke marijuana together, drink alcohol (even strong liquor), and consequently leave behind trash... which is annoying for many residents. There's more to report, but I don't want to spoil the basic idea and would appreciate improvements.

There are frequent disturbances late at night, and the facility seems more like a front for underprivileged and alcohol-dependent youths than a normal youth center. Why something like this is tolerated in a regular apartment building is beyond me.

My name is Alexia and I love it there! I accidentally broke my foot there and two volunteers just walked me to the train station :D They're really nice people there and it's always fun.

I've been there twice and noticed that German pop music (Schlager) is played constantly. Besides board games, there are also occasional other activities like comedy shows or making posters together. The participants are mostly friendly, although some can be quite cheeky. What bothered me personally was that alcohol is consumed right outside the meeting place, and some fetishes are openly displayed – for example, sucking on baby pacifiers. Those who belong to the LGBTQ+ community and enjoy these kinds of gatherings might find this a suitable place. However, it wasn't for me, as I found it rather boring overall – but that's just my opinion, of course. Overall, I would give the meeting place 3 to 4 stars. There are nice people and a variety of activities, but some aspects didn't appeal to me personally.
