Step out of the Hauptbahnhof on the east side and you are in St. Georg within a minute: kebab shops and hotel neon along Steindamm, the smell of rain on cobbles, and a few streets further on, the café tables and rainbow flags of the Lange Reihe. Hamburg greets you with a short "Moin", at any hour, and gets on with things. Its cruising scene is like that too: compact and practical rather than sprawling. Two men-only cruise bars and two of the three gay saunas sit within a few minutes' walk of each other behind the station, with the third sauna over in Altona and a calendar of fetish parties filling the gaps. St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn are for drinking and drag; the cruising happens in St. Georg.

Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination law, and since November 2024 the Self-Determination Act (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) lets adults change their legal gender by declaration; cruise bars, darkrooms and gay saunas are legal, licensed businesses. Sex in public is a different matter: under §183a StGB (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses, "causing a public nuisance") sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison.

St. Georg: the cruise bars

Both of Hamburg's dedicated cruise bars are in St. Georg, between the Hauptbahnhof and U Lohmühlenstraße. Start with a drink on the Lange Reihe, the neighbourhood's main street of gay cafés and bars (see our Hamburg bars guide), then walk five minutes across Steindamm. Both bars are men only and over-18 only.

Toms Saloon

Toms Saloon, often just called Toms (Pulverteich 17), is a rustic cruise bar that has been drawing men "for decades", according to the Pinksider listings guide, which also describes it as one of Hamburg's oldest fetish and leather bars. Expect a bar, benches in front of porn screens and a spacious darkroom full of corners. Pinksider lists it as open every night from 20:00, until 03:00 Sunday to Thursday and 05:00 on Friday and Saturday, with a minimum spend (Mindestverzehr) of €6 plus a cloakroom fee at weekends and two-for-one drinks on Tuesdays from 20:00 to midnight. The crowd is mixed in age; the music is pop and house.

Toms also hosts the city's fetish groups. In autumn 2026 its programme included the fortnightly DOMerstag kink night on Thursdays, Hamburg Fetish e.V.'s Neon Kinky, a BLACK&tight night, weekend "Drinks & Play" nights and an early Sunday Frühclub from 06:00 to 12:00 on 13 December. The Hamburg Fetish Crawl was listed for Saturday 12 December 2026. Visitor reviews on Tripadvisor are mixed (3.3 out of 5 from 18 reviews), and a January 2025 reviewer complained about a bartender; check your bill if you pay by card.

SLUT Club

SLUT Club (Rostocker Straße 20; nearest stations U/S Hauptbahnhof and U Lohmühlenstraße) is a men-only fetish bar and cruise club with a bar, darkroom and cruising maze. Travel Gay lists it as open Wednesday and Thursday 20:00–03:00, Saturday from 20:00 and Sunday from 18:00. Many nights have a strict dress code: leather, rubber, skin, uniform, boots, masks, or naked. Perfume and slippers are not allowed, and lube, condoms and gloves are free. Check the club's own site for the night's code before you go.

The weekly rhythm in November 2026, according to Pinksider:

    • Wednesday: Cheap & Sexy, two drinks for the price of one from 20:00 to 23:00, no dress code.
    • Thursday: Sleazy & Easy, a naked party from 20:00 to 23:00, then the bar stays open late.
    • Friday: Shooters Friday from 22:00, fetish look, €1.50 shots.
    • Saturday: Slut Club Non Stop, leather, rubber and gear, 22:00–05:00.
    • Sundays: the naked Cocksucker Club on the first Sunday of the month (18:00–23:00) and the underwear and jock party Under Dressed on the third Sunday (18:00–22:00); the next was 15 November 2026.

Prices reported by visitors on Travel Gay vary a lot, so ask at the bar before you order. The most recent review there is from March 2024; the club's 2026 event calendar shows it is trading.

    The saunas

Hamburg has three gay saunas. They are cruising venues as much as wellness ones, with darkrooms and cabins. For full details see our Hamburg saunas guide; here are the essentials. Hours and offers change, so check the sauna's own site before you go.

    Dragon Sauna

Dragon (Pulverteich 37, St. Georg) is a few doors from Toms and is the largest of the three: Travel Gay gives 1,500 m² and Pinksider 1,800 m². Facilities include a Finnish sauna, steam room, caldarium, jacuzzi, maze, darkroom, private cabins, film rooms, a smoking area, and a bar and bistro. It opens at 13:00 on weekdays and runs non-stop from Friday to Sunday. Pinksider's autumn 2026 programme lists an under-25s discount on Mondays, €6 off a locker on Tuesdays, a 40-plus day on Wednesdays, a Mixed Day open to all genders on Thursdays (worth knowing if you want a men-only visit), a partner day on Fridays, a monthly bears' day and Sunday infusions from 16:00 to 19:00.

    Men's Heaven

Men's Heaven (Steindamm 14, St. Georg, near the Hauptbahnhof) spreads over four levels, with a Finnish sauna, a large steam room, a swimming pool, a cinema, cruising areas, massage, a shop and rooms for rent. Travel Gay mentions foam parties on Friday and Saturday nights and a weekly Bear Sunday. We couldn't find a current official price list; check gaysauna.de or call ahead.

    Apollo Sauna

Apollo (Max-Brauer-Allee 277, Altona) is smaller and more traditional, aimed at men over 40 and their admirers, with a Finnish sauna, steam room, darkroom, video room, basement cabins and a bar. Pinksider lists it as open Monday to Wednesday 11:00–20:00, Thursday to 22:30, Friday 12:00–24:00 and then non-stop until Sunday at 21:00, with entry at €25 including towel, locker and flip-flops. Monday is Youngster Day (€10 for men aged 18 to 28), there's a happy hour from 17:30 Monday to Thursday, and the leather club MSC Hamburg e.V. holds a Fetish Night here; the next was listed for Friday 6 November 2026.

    Parties and St. Pauli

St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn are where Hamburg goes out, and there are gay bars and drag shows around the Kiez, but we found no dedicated gay cruise bar there in 2026. What does happen in St. Pauli is the occasional party: Babylon Clubbing Hamburg, a men-only, sex-positive dance and play party, was listed at Bahnhof Pauli for Saturday 7 November 2026. Parties like this move and change dates, so check the organisers' channels. Fetish nights at Toms, SLUT Club and Apollo (above) are the regular fixtures.

Sex cinemas and shops: older guides list a few adult shops and cinemas in St. Georg and St. Pauli, but we couldn't confirm any gay cruising cinema operating in 2026. If you want cabins and films, the saunas and both cruise bars have them.

Closed: Happy-Sauna (Altona) and Erlebnisbar Eden (Jenfeld) have shut for good; ignore older guides that still list them.

Outdoors: the law and the risks

Some websites still name Hamburg parks as outdoor cruising areas. We don't give directions. Hamburg's parks are busy public spaces used by families, joggers and dog walkers, and the law is clear:

    • §183a StGB (Criminal Code): sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can be punished with a fine or up to one year in prison.
    • §183 StGB separately covers indecent exposure (exhibitionistische Handlungen) by men.
    • §118 OWiG (Administrative Offences Act, Belästigung der Allgemeinheit): grossly improper behaviour that annoys or endangers the public can be fined even when it isn't a crime.

After dark, isolated spots are also where robberies happen. If you go anyway: daylight or dusk only, phone and cash at home, nothing you can't afford to lose, and leave if a situation feels wrong. With cruise bars and saunas this close to the Hauptbahnhof, there's little reason to take the risk.

    Practical tips

    • Entry and spend: the bars mostly charge through a minimum spend and a cloakroom fee rather than a ticket (Toms: €6 minimum spend at weekends). Saunas charge entry; Apollo lists €25. Bring some cash (Bargeld).
    • Dress codes: SLUT Club and many party nights have strict codes; read the night's listing first. If you're turned away, it isn't personal.
    • Lockers and phones: check your clothes, phone and wallet into the Garderobe or a Spind before the darkroom. No photos, ever.
    • Consent: a hand moved away, or a "nein", means no. You can always leave.
    • Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 112 in an emergency. Hein & Fiete offers chemsex counselling (Wednesdays 16:00–18:00, by appointment).
    • Testing: Hein & Fiete, Hamburg's gay checkpoint, is at Pulverteich 21, next door to the cruise bars, and offers free, anonymous HIV and STI tests without an appointment (Pinksider lists testing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 16:00–20:00; phone 040 240 333). CASAblanca (Max-Brauer-Allee 152, Altona) also offers free, anonymous HIV tests.
    • PEP: after a risk, start post-exposure prophylaxis as soon as possible, ideally within hours and no later than 48 to 72 hours. Outside clinic hours, go to a hospital emergency department: a clinic list from 2019 names the internal-medicine emergency unit of the Asklepios Klinik St. Georg (Lohmühlenstraße 5, a short walk from the cruise bars) and the UKE emergency department (Martinistraße 52, Eppendorf) as keeping PEP round the clock. Call ahead to check. PrEP is prescribed in Germany through HIV specialist practices.
    • Getting home: the HVV says U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines run all night before weekends and public holidays. On other nights, night buses (lines 600 to 688) take over. Plan your route in the HVV app before you leave; St. Georg is a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof, where most lines meet.
    • Apps: Romeo and Grindr are both widely used in Germany.

A Hamburg night, the local way

Eat before you go out: a Fischbrötchen (a bread roll with pickled herring, Bismarck herring or fried fish) from a stand at the Landungsbrücken, or a plate at one of the cafés on the Lange Reihe. Drink a bottle of Astra, the St. Pauli beer with the anchor-and-heart logo. And if a night at the bars and saunas runs into Sunday morning, do what Hamburg's night owls have long done: take the S-Bahn to the Fischmarkt in Altona, held by the Elbe every Sunday from 05:00 (07:00 from mid-November to mid-March) until 09:30, according to the City of Hamburg, for coffee, a fish roll and a buttery, cinnamon Franzbrötchen before bed.

    Pride: CSD Hamburg 2026

Hamburg Pride took place in late July and early August. Pride Week began on 25 July 2026, the Pride House ran from 26 to 30 July, and the CSD demonstration set off at 12:00 on Saturday 1 August 2026 from Lübecker Straße at the corner of Mühlendamm, just east of St. Georg, and ended at the Lombardsbrücke. The street festival filled the Rathausmarkt, Jungfernstieg and Ballindamm from 31 July to 2 August. The motto was "Solidarisch queer. Haltung zeigen – für eine Zukunft ohne Angst!" ("Queer in solidarity. Take a stand – for a future without fear!"). Organisers expected about 250,000 people, and after the attack near Berlin's CSD the weekend before, Hamburg's police roughly doubled their presence compared with 2025. The cruise bars and saunas were packed all weekend. For 2027 dates, see hamburg-pride.de and the Hamburg city page.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Hamburg?

Mostly in St. Georg, the gay quarter behind the Hauptbahnhof. The two cruise bars, Toms Saloon on Pulverteich and SLUT Club on Rostocker Straße, and two of the three gay saunas, Dragon and Men's Heaven, are all within a short walk of the station. The third sauna, Apollo, is in Altona, a few kilometres west.

Is Toms Saloon in St. Georg or St. Georg?

St. Georg. Toms Saloon is at Pulverteich 17, a side street off Steindamm a few minutes from the Hauptbahnhof, not on the Reeperbahn. It is a men-only cruise bar with a large darkroom, listed as open from 20:00 every night, until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Which gay sauna in Hamburg should I choose?

Dragon on Pulverteich is the big one, with a maze, darkroom and cabins, and runs non-stop at weekends. Men's Heaven on Steindamm has a pool and spreads over four levels. Apollo in Altona is smaller and aimed at men over 40 and their admirers. Check each sauna's own site for current prices and themed days.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Hamburg?

Sex between men is legal; sex in public is not. A public sexual act that knowingly offends others is a crime in Germany (§183a StGB), punishable by a fine or up to a year in prison, and isolated spots carry a real risk of robbery after dark. The cruise bars and saunas behind the Hauptbahnhof are the legal, safer option.

When was CSD Hamburg 2026?

The CSD demonstration took place on Saturday 1 August 2026, starting at 12:00 on Lübecker Straße and ending at the Lombardsbrücke, with the street festival from 31 July to 2 August. Pride Week began on 25 July. Check hamburg-pride.de for the 2027 dates.
