The honest summary: Miskolc is Hungary's fourth-largest city, with about 141,000 people (KSH estimate, 1 January 2025), two hours north-east of Budapest by InterCity train. It is a good base for the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, Lillafüred and the Bükk hills. It has no gay bar, club, sauna, LGBTQ+ group or Pride, and we'd rather tell you that up front than pad the page with ordinary bars. Gay life here happens on dating apps, and the nearest real scene is Budapest.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relationships are legal in Hungary, with an equal age of consent of 14, and registered partnership has existed since 2009. There is no marriage or joint adoption, and legal gender change has been banned since 2020. On 13 October 2026, parliament under the new Tisza government repealed the 2021 "child protection" rules that restricted LGBTQ+ content.
What the scene actually looks like
We checked Travel Gay, Spartacus and Hungarian LGBTQ+ media (Humen, Háttér Society, Telex, 444), plus Google Maps searches in English and Hungarian for "meleg bár", "meleg szauna" and "LMBTQ Miskolc". None of them lists a gay bar, club or party night open in Miskolc, and we found no record of one that closed recently either.
Searching "gay bar Miskolc" on maps returns the pubs and cocktail bars on Széchenyi utca and around Városház tér, plus a striptease bar. None of them calls itself gay or queer, and we found no drag nights at any of them, so we don't list them as gay venues. The bars on the pedestrian street are relaxed mixed places, and that is the most you should expect.
We also found no LGBTQ+ association, university group or support group based in Miskolc. Háttér Society in Budapest is the national organisation. It runs a helpline, legal aid and HIV information for the whole country.
Pride and events
No Pride march, picnic or rainbow event has ever been documented in Miskolc. Older AI-written guides (including a previous version of ours) said Miskolc held Pride "in June or July". That was invented, and we've removed it.
- Budapest Pride took place on Saturday 27 June 2026, with police approval. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
- Pécs Pride, the only Pride outside Budapest, was held on 12 September 2026.
- Premier Hotel Miskolc: on Arany János tér, with a well-reviewed restaurant and secure parking.
- Hotel Pannonia: on Kossuth Lajos utca, a few minutes' walk from Széchenyi utca.
- Old Miskolcz Hotel & Restaurant: small hotel on Horváth Lajos utca, 4.5 on Google.
- Aranykorona Hotel: below Avas hill on Kisavas sor, with a restaurant and show cellar.
- Lévay Villa Hotel: small villa hotel on Lévay József utca, with parking.
- City Hotel Miskolc: on Csabai kapu, a little outside the centre, 4.5 on Google.
- Bástya Wellness Hotel: large spa hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a short walk from the Cave Bath.
- Calimbra Wellness Hotel: two pools, a spa, a restaurant and a bar.
- Kikelet Club Hotel: mid-size hotel on Fenyő utca.
- Avalon Resort & SPA: forest spa resort with log cabins; it markets itself to families.
- Train: InterCity trains run from Budapest-Keleti to Miskolc-Tiszai about every hour and take roughly two hours. That makes Budapest's bars and saunas a realistic trip if you stay over there.
- Air: Miskolc has no airport. Košice in Slovakia (about 90 km) and Debrecen (about 120 km) are the closest, but most visitors fly into Budapest and take the train.
- In town: MVK runs two tram lines from Tiszai station through the centre towards Diósgyőr, plus a dense bus network. Buses also serve Miskolctapolca.
- Lillafüred: the narrow-gauge forest railway leaves from Dorottya utca and runs via Lillafüred (about 12 km away, with the Palace Hotel and Lake Hámori) to Garadna. Diósgyőr Castle and the Avas lookout tower are within the city.
- Safety: Miskolc is generally safe for visitors, and we found no reports of attacks on LGBTQ+ people in 2024-2026. It is more conservative than Budapest, so most same-sex couples keep public affection low-key, especially outside the centre.
- Meeting people: with no venues, dating apps are how gay men meet in Miskolc. Use the usual care when meeting strangers.
- Health: the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Government Office in Miskolc offers anonymous HIV testing. Check the current hours before going.
- Money: cards are widely accepted, but smaller bars and kiosks may want forints in cash.

The thermal baths: lovely, but not gay
The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath (Barlangfürdő) is why many people come to Miskolc: warm spring water running through natural caves. It closed after a fire on 6 September 2024 and reopened on 20 August 2026. According to the bath's website it is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00, and an adult day ticket costs 8,500 Ft until the end of 2026.
The Cave Bath, the Selyemrét lido in town and the Ellipsum spa next door are mainstream family and wellness baths. None of them has a gay reputation, and you shouldn't treat them as meeting places. There is no gay sauna anywhere in the region; the nearest are in Budapest.
Gone but still Googled
Older online guides describe a "small active gay community" with bars "scattered through the city centre" and a "Miszla thermal bath". We couldn't find any of these. No named gay venue in Miskolc turns up in any source we checked, and the Miszla bath doesn't exist. If you see either claim elsewhere, it was most likely copied from old generated text.
Where to stay
There are no gay or gay-marketed hotels in Miskolc. Everything below is a mainstream hotel that welcomes all guests. Choose between the walkable centre and the Miskolctapolca spa quarter, about 7 km south-west.
