⚖️ Russia has systematically dismantled LGBTQ+ rights over the past decade. Same-sex relations were decriminalized in 1993 but never afforded legal recognition. The 2013 "gay propaganda" law banned LGBTQ+ content accessible to minors. In November 2023 the Russian Supreme Court designated the "international LGBT movement" as an extremist organization — effectively criminalizing any visible LGBTQ+ identity. In April 2026 the courts went further, ruling that the support organizations themselves — including the Russian LGBT Network and Coming Out — are extremist, and banning their activity nationwide. Same-sex marriage is constitutionally banned since 2020. Pride events have been banned in Moscow since 2006. For LGBTQ+ travellers, Russia is currently one of the most dangerous destinations in the world.
