About this place Axel Hotel Madrid

Axel Hotel Madrid is the Madrid branch of the international Axel Hotels group, which began with the original Axel Barcelona in 2003 and has since expanded to Berlin, New York, Copenhagen, and other cities. The Madrid property is located near Atocha railway station — giving it excellent transport connections to the wider city and to Renfe's high-speed rail network — and is a Metro stop from Chueca. The Axel brand's defining characteristics apply: design-forward rooms, an explicit LGBTQ+-welcoming identity, a rooftop/social space that serves as a community hub as much as a hotel amenity, and staff who understand the specific needs of gay travellers. For visitors to Madrid attending WorldPride or Orgullo, the Axel is one of the most in-demand accommodation options — book months in advance. For ordinary visits, the Atocha location provides good access to both the gay scene in Chueca and the cultural institutions in the museum corridor (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen-Bornemisza — all within walking distance of Atocha).

Overall, the hotel provides a decent experience for being in the center of Madrid with a rooftop pool. Being in a hot city like Madrid, this is a true gem to be able to cool off. However, I was not entirely happy with the room and the atmosphere. First of all, I chose this hotel because it is advertised as queer friendly and adult only and I am a queer childfree woman. However, it seems to rather focus on male gay clientele (Condoms on the bedside table, male razors, “drop it” on the soap). This alone wouldn’t be a problem ofc, if there wouldn’t have been male customers performing sexual acts and having their genitals out in the pool and being provided with free tequila from the bar staff on top even though already clearly beyond drunk and acting off. It ruined the ambient for me and other guests and the hotel staff only intervened super late when they could already not walk anymore. The guys at some point were sitting on my towel, eating from my snacks etc. So apart from being offensive, they bothered me in my personal space on top and I would have wished for more awareness of the hotel staff, especially when claiming they want to provide an inclusive and safe space. Furthermore, the room is quite dark and the details are not looked for. Drawers and closet weren’t cleaned inside, curtain was partly broken, hose was leaking. I made the best out of my stay and had a great time in Madrid, but wouldn’t return for the previous reasons.

We had a lovely stay at Axel Hotel Madrid. The location is excellent , walking distance to the main tourist attractions, great restaurants, and nightlife spots. Our room was nice overall, although it’s worth mentioning that in some rooms the toilet is literally next to the bed, separated only by a glass door, which may not be ideal for everyone. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly throughout our stay. One small disappointment: we didn’t receive the welcome drinks I had read about online 🤭 The rooftop is beautiful and convenient if you’re staying at the hotel, though I found the menu a bit overpriced compared to other nearby bars where we had even better drinks for around 25% less. One thing to keep in mind for longer stays: the TVs are not smart TVs, and you can only connect Android devices, so streaming movies can be a bit limited. On the positive side, the minibar is very complete, and the room includes lots of thoughtful details such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, tissues, wine and champagne glasses, and other useful amenities that make the stay more comfortable. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely recommend it!

Absolutely unacceptable experience from start to finish. The hotel had ongoing issues with the AC system during my stay, and instead of resolving it professionally, they kept sending maintenance staff in and out of my room for hours, completely destroying any sense of privacy or comfort. Imagine trying to relax on vacation while random people constantly enter your room because the hotel can’t handle basic maintenance. What made it even worse was that after wasting a huge part of my vacation dealing with this chaos, they still couldn’t fix the issue and ended up forcing me to move rooms in the middle of my stay. Packing and relocating because of their incompetence is not something any guest should have to deal with. The entire situation felt disorganized, stressful, and extremely unprofessional. For the prices they charge, this level of service is embarrassing. Staff communication was poor, maintenance clearly had no idea what they were doing, and the hotel completely failed to respect guests’ privacy and comfort. This was honestly one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had, and I would strongly advise others to stay elsewhere if they want a peaceful and enjoyable vacation. Totally not recommended.
