Gay Bars & Clubs in Lausanne: Switzerland's Lakeside LGBTQ+ Scene
Lausanne, on the northern shore of Lake Geneva, has a small but genuine dedicated gay scene. It is far more low-key than Zurich or Geneva, and it shrank after the old 43&10 club closed in 2015, but the city still has real gay bars, a cruise club and two gay saunas. Most of the dedicated venues cluster around Avenue de Tivoli, near the train station, rather than in the mainstream Flon nightlife district.
The Dedicated Gay Bars
Le Saxo
Le Saxo, near Place Saint-François, is the oldest gay bar in Lausanne. It describes itself as the city's original gay, queer and rainbow bar, running since 1992. It is a warm, unpretentious anchor of the local scene: a place for a relaxed drink, a chat with regulars and a genuine sense of community. If you want to understand Lausanne's queer nightlife, this is the natural starting point.
OPERA 5 / GT's Bar
OPERA 5 (also known as GT's Bar, gtsbar.ch) on Avenue de Tivoli is the current flagship of the scene. It combines a gay bar and restaurant with a karaoké stage upstairs and a basement gay club, "Backstage," that hosts drag shows and DJ nights. You can arrive for dinner, stay for karaoke and end up dancing downstairs. The crowd is friendly and mixed, and the venue works equally well for a celebration or a casual night out.
Pin Up Bar
Pin Up Bar, on Rue Marterey, is a dedicated LGBTQ bar that has been open since 2011 and leans towards a lesbian and women's crowd, though everyone is welcome. It is intimate and social, a good place for cocktails and conversation away from the club atmosphere.
Trafick
Trafick, on Avenue de Tivoli, is a dedicated gay cruise and sex club rather than a social bar. It has a darkroom and runs themed nights for a gay male, adults-only crowd. If that is what you are looking for it is a well-established fixture; if you want a chatty bar or a mainstream dance floor, choose Le Saxo or OPERA 5 instead.
Gay-Friendly Nightlife
Beyond the dedicated venues, MAD Club in the Flon is a large mainstream nightclub famous for its long-running Sunday gay night, GAMEBOY. Bar Tabac and MilkShake are relaxed, gay-friendly spots that draw a mixed crowd. These are welcoming rather than exclusively gay, but they are part of a good night out in the city.
Saunas and More
Do not believe older guides that claim Lausanne has no gay sauna — it has two. Pink Beach (Avenue de Tivoli 7 & 9) is the largest gay sauna in Switzerland at around 1,650 m², and Top Club (Rue de Bellefontaine 6) has run as a men's gay sauna since 1984. For community resources, VoQueer (the cantonal LGBTIQ+ association) and Checkpoint Vaud (sexual health) are both based in the centre.
Best Nights, Vibe & What to Expect
The dedicated bars are busiest from Thursday to Saturday, with OPERA 5 and Trafick liveliest at the weekend and MAD's GAMEBOY drawing crowds on Sundays. The overall atmosphere is warm, safe and understated — Swiss discretion with a queer heart. Expect a mix of ages, plenty of students and young professionals, and staff who are genuinely welcoming.
Tips for Your Visit
Getting There: Lausanne's metro, buses and trains make it easy to reach the Avenue de Tivoli cluster and the Flon on foot or with a short ride. Taxis and ride-sharing run late.
Ages & ID: The legal drinking age is 16 for beer and wine, 18 for spirits; clubs and the cruise club are 18+ (sometimes 20+). Carry valid ID.
Safety: Switzerland is one of the safest destinations in the world for LGBTQ+ travellers. Use normal common sense with your belongings and drinks, especially late at night.
