First port of call was the toilets and they were disgusting. Heaven knows when they were last cleaned. Decided to head straight for the cafe and it was closed. Nothing to say on the website that it was no longer open. Decided to take the 3 children on the advertised miniature railway and guess what? It was closed! We had travelled from Leamington Spa to meet family from Derby, Very disappointed and so were the 3 children!
Travelled from Derby to meet family coming from Warwickshire for a catch-up and hoping to enjoy something to eat in the Cafe. Upon arrival we noticed there was a large funfair open for the holidays, but swiftly diverted around the outside to avoid, as we’re not fun fair people. We headed for what was signposted as the cafe, only to see it was all shut down, and signage saying so. This was massively disappointing, as with the journey we’d had, it would have been nice to sit with a cuppa and maybe some cake. We headed towards the park, where the kids could enjoy some time together, all facilities were in tact and everything clean and safe, and thankfully an icecream truck arrived, so kids were sorted for food. We then decided to head towards the “pet corner”. This was such a delight, and lovely to see the animals all well cared for with very clean enclosures. To say that is free as well! A great addition to already beautiful surroundings. The gardens and pond area were all well kept. There was a vending machine for duck feed, which I’d never seen before. £1.50 was abit steep, however the way it shot out of the spout, had us all in stitches, as the kids frantically tried to pick it up off the ground, whilst fighting off ducks, pigeons and geese. We finally decided to head for the miniature railway, but alas it was also closed. Again disappointing, but it didn’t ruin our visit. All in all a good visit, but very disappointed with the closure of the cafe, despite the council website stating there was one, and no say of it being closed. If you are travelling a fair distance, and stopping for the day, I’d take a picnic, or find somewhere before your visit to eat first. And take a container for the duck feed, unless you want some laughs, lol!
On the 15th July I visited the park, to which I had not visited fir about 40 odd years. I was a little disappointed as to the neglect of some of the areas. Yes there is a lot of park to walk around, and for children to run about. However the Japanese garden had been let go, there was dead trees and other shrubs that had died. The rise garden was full of roses, I wished I had my securters with me, as a lot of them needed deadheading. Rubbish bins around the park, but litter blown about. Warden on site, but did not see any one doing any gardening work. Such a shame but there again it is Leicester for you. A positive note the area around the cafe was lovely.
This is one of the parks located in the City of Leicester which offers a space for range of activities such as Park-Run fun and activities. If you are in Leicester and have time to explore, please make a day to visit.
Appalling customer service. We were made to feel like an inconvenience throughout and there was no service with a smile, rather grumpy faces that clearly didn’t want to be there! We entered at 1.45pm 3/4 hour before closing time and they willingly admitted they were shutting up early as they hadn’t made much money. Despite signs saying the kitchen closed at 2pm they refused us food stating the kitchen had been closed for over half an hour. They had shut the shuttered and put the closed sign on the door and whilst we drank our coffee several people came to the door and turned away. How do they expect to make money when they are turning customers away. I certainly won’t be visiting again! Shame on Loros
This is a large park within walking distance of Leicester city centre. There's plenty to see even this time of year. Don't miss the cafe.
Lovely large park in the heart of Leicester. You could spend hours here and not want to go home. Rich with history. Stunning views
Unfortunately, this is also a reflection of Leicester, which is now a cesspool. The town centre is full of the homeless, drunks, and is thoroughly uninviting. I left the town many years ago, but recently returned for a few months, to be bitterly disappointed. And now M&S is closing. The final nail. And please please please knock down Lee Circle!!! Luckily my stay comes to an end shortly.
I was absolutely appalled, it was a disgrace. This once beautiful park has become overgrown, the bins had not been emptied there was rubbish all over the grounds including dirty nappies. The boating lake looked like a cesspit, it was black, oily and again full of rubbish. The gents toilets were locked as they were broken. We went to get a coffee and ice cream from the cafe this took nearly 25 minute's due to the staff having little or no experience of how to make a coffee. This is heartbreaking as we spent many years at this park as children enjoying the grounds, boating lake and having picnics. It will be a long time before I step foot in the grounds again. The council charge for parking there so why not use some of this money to clean up this park ...
We went to Abbey Park because we met up with our family and they have a dog. What a wonderfully beautiful place!! We went into the dog friendly cafe and had the most delicious scones ever!!!
beautiful park, so many different scenes areas
Visited during the Leicester food festival. Wonderful park, accessible for all.
Abbey Park is amazing and very spacious. It has beautiful gardens, a lake, historic ruins, a seasonal miniature railway [check official website for availability], Pets Corner, and plenty of walking areas.
Beautiful park- normally calm, however. Dear Management, Please instruct your park wardens to ask large groups who decide to descend into areas like the Victorian Flower Garden as their own personal space for blaring out music/ holding events- this isn't correct park etiquette for shared spaces. Blasting music in a park is totally unacceptable and needs to be cracked down on - ruins peoples and the animals peace. Also clearer seasonal opening closing times at gates would be helpful. Café nice, but not clear enough when its open- menu outside would help so we can see its open and whats actually on offer! Bring back the boats on the lake at weekends!
Abbey Park was a lovely park years ago but it is sadly going down hill some areas are unkept and feel unsafe in some areas the new play area in the pets corner is awful and is made of wood which will be slippy when wet and will rot quickly the other play toys was so much nicer with colours there are lots of seats on the park but are mostly covered in bird poo the Chinese garden is just full of rubbish and the water is so dirty
Nice and clean.
Clean park, great boating lake
A little bit tatty but overall an interesting park astride the river Soar.
