Midsumma Festival Melbourne
À propos de cet événement
Midsumma is Melbourne's queer arts and culture festival, running since 1988 across three weeks of the southern summer in theatres, galleries, clubs and outdoor sites. It is closer to an arts festival with a Pride March attached than to a single parade weekend. Its 2024-25 annual report counted 213 events over 22 days and 285,958 attendances; that counts tickets and entries, not unique people.
Three big days frame the programme. The Midsumma Carnival opens the festival on a Sunday with a free outdoor day of stalls, stages and picnics. The Pride March, the community-run parade, happens two weeks later along Fitzroy Street in St Kilda; in 2026 Midsumma listed more than 7,000 marchers. Victoria's Pride, a street party on the final Sunday, closes the festival. In between sit about 200 shows, talks, club nights and exhibitions, a mix of free and ticketed, published in a programme released in late November. Registration for marching groups opens in September.
Book shows as soon as the programme drops, because small-venue cabaret and theatre sell out. Melbourne in January can swing from mild days to heatwaves within a week, so pack for both. The Australian Open usually takes the second half of January, which pushes up hotel prices in the CBD and Southbank; St Kilda and the inner north are good bases for the March and the closing party.
The last festival ran from 18 January to 8 February 2026, with the Pride March on 1 February. The 2027 dates are officially announced: 17 January to 7 February 2027, with the Carnival on 17 January, the Pride March on 31 January and Victoria's Pride on 7 February. Midsumma says the full programme will be released on 24 November 2026, and that is the moment to start booking.
