Dalur - HI Eco Hostel, Café & Bar

Very nice hostel. The people at the reception were very nice and were willing to help right away. I stayed in a 6-person room, the room was not that big but enough to be in the evening and spend the night. It was very easy to get to know other travelers🙂 Thank you for a nice stay with you!

*Dalur HI Eco Hostel – solid eco stay! ★★★★★* Loved our stay at Dalur. It’s clean, cozy, and the whole eco vibe is legit — great recycling, low waste, and they actually care about sustainability. Dorms and bathrooms were spotless. Beds comfy with thick curtains for privacy + blocking summer light. Kitchen is well equipped and super clean, which is rare for hostels. Easy to cook and meet other travelers. Staff were super friendly and helpful with hiking/bus tips. Common area has great atmosphere without being party-chaos. Perfect if you want affordable, comfortable, and green. Would stay again. We had booked 4 bed room with private bathroom directly from their site.

Our stay at Dalur HI Hostel was truly exceptional… one of those rare travel experiences that goes beyond anything you expect and leaves you genuinely speechless. From the moment we arrived, we could feel how welcoming and well-run everything was. Traveling as a family of four, having our own private room with a private bathroom and shower made such a difference. It gave us the comfort and privacy of a hotel while still letting us enjoy the warm, social atmosphere that makes a hostel so special. The room itself was spacious, thoughtfully laid out, and incredibly comfortable… perfect for relaxing after long days of exploring Iceland. I had the best sleep of my life! Self check in was also amazing and made it so easy when we got here! One of the first things we noticed was how immaculately clean everything was. Not just “tidy,” but truly spotless. The room, the bathroom, the common areas… every single space was maintained to such a high standard. You can tell that the housekeeping team takes immense pride in what they do, and it absolutely shows. It made us feel so comfortable and at ease throughout our entire stay. The location is fantastic… close enough to downtown Reykjavík that getting into the heart of the city is quick and easy, yet far enough away to enjoy a quieter, more peaceful environment. It gave us the best of both worlds. Whether we were heading out for sightseeing, restaurants, or just a walk, everything felt easily accessible. And then there’s the lobby, which deserves its own mention. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful and inviting hostel spaces we’ve ever seen. Warm, stylish, and thoughtfully designed, it became a place where we loved to unwind as a family. Whether sitting together planning our next day or just relaxing after an adventure, it added so much to the overall experience. What truly made our stay unforgettable, though, was the people. A huge and heartfelt thank you to Olly Björk Sigríðardóttir and Ibolya. Your help in arranging everything for our family did not go unnoticed. You were both so kind, organized, and genuinely caring. From the very beginning, you made us feel welcomed, valued, and completely taken care of. It’s rare to come across people who put so much heart into what they do, and it made all the difference for us. To the entire front desk team, every interaction we had was positive, friendly, and helpful. No question was too small, and every recommendation or bit of assistance was given with a smile. You created such a warm and inviting atmosphere that made coming back “home” each day feel special. And to the housekeeping staff, thank you for your incredible attention to detail and hard work. The level of cleanliness and care you maintain is truly impressive and made our stay so comfortable. This wasn’t just a place for us to sleep…. it became a place where we could relax, recharge, and feel completely at home during our trip. Experiences like this are what make travel so memorable, and we are so grateful to the entire Dalur HI Hostel team for creating that for us. It was also fun to sit in the common areas near the lobby and meet other travellers from around the world! We left genuinely speechless and so appreciative. We would recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Iceland without hesitation… and we already know that if we’re lucky enough to return, this is exactly where we’ll be staying again.

This is a great place in the neighbourhood! They monthly organize swap markets and it’s an appointment that I never miss 😊

The facilities here were solid, with clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, a reasonably sized kitchen and many hangout spots. However, you should note that there isn’t really an age limit for this hostel unlike other hostels, and it often hosts groups of kids on school trips and as such can be quite noisy and chaotic at times.

We (a family with three children aged 8, 11, and 13) stayed at this lovely hostel with its great atmosphere at the beginning and end of our Iceland trip. The location is fantastic (close to the airport and great activities like whale watching and the Perlan Museum in Reykjavik), and the bed linen, free parking, and kitchen were important to us. The ping-pong table, the evening entertainment (e.g., movie nights), and the spaciousness were also great. It was also easy to chat with the other guests. We hope to return someday.

I stayed at both the campsite and the hostel during my 2 visits and they both went very well. The campsite has all the facilities you need and more and I had no issue with the pin code system they use to let you in. Just make sure you book the campsite in advance. My stays at the hostel were also very good. The breakfast is plentiful, the beds were comfortable, the staff very nice to deal with and the atmosphere there is great. There's also a happy hour too!

Overall, it was a standard stay; it's a hostel like any other in a big city. I found it interesting and a very good idea that they had a designated meeting time for solo travelers, as it's a nice initiative for people traveling alone. There's no elevator, and since our room was on the second floor, we had to carry our suitcases up (which were quite large, plus our backpacks and shopping bags).

Very fair prices, nicely heated and cozy common areas.

It's nice and clean, the only downside is that there are no towels, which is inconvenient for showering.

The location is not centrally located, the nearest Cronan is 15 min walk away. It’s far from everything in central Reykjavik. Room is small, bed not super clean, the bathroom downstairs is under construction so you have to fight for the showers all the time. The kitchens are small and for the number of people it houses, it’s definitely cramped. The trash is always overflowing and the tables not clean. No oven, no dishwasher.

As other reviews have mentioned, there are often groups of teenagers who gather and make noise on weekends. They run in the hallways, bang on doors, repeatedly enter incorrect passwords to trigger alarms, and even bang on the shower doors, which is very unsettling. I think they don't care about the feelings of ordinary travelers. I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially women.
