Barcelona's queer punk answer to circuit season

Maricas — the name is a Spanish reappropriation of a homophobic slur, and the reclamation is the whole political premise — has been rewriting Barcelona's queer nightlife map since the mid-2010s. The collective emerged as the specifically queer, specifically Spanish, specifically post-circuit response to a city that was famous globally for gay tourism (see our Circuit Festival brand page) but whose actual queer community had been quietly asking for a different kind of party. Maricas is what they built: fashion-punk queer nights, techno and Latin-electronica blending, a booking policy that pulls the Iberian queer underground together, and a crowd that treats being at a Maricas party as a small political statement. Barcelona has other queer collectives — but Maricas is the one whose logo has appeared on the flyers of every serious European queer collaboration for eight years running.

What Maricas sounds like

Techno, but Spanish. The influences you don't hear in Berlin: Iberian house tradition, cumbia edits, Latin electronica, and the perreo-and-club-music crossover that produces genuinely thrilling sets from residents like Alba Amsel and the broader Barcelona-Madrid queer DJ pool. The collective has been shaping what "queer Latin techno" sounds like for a European audience — and their guest bookings from Mexico, Colombia and Chile close the Latin American circle that mainstream European circuit has always kept at arm's length.

The Barcelona context — this is not Circuit Festival

The critical framing: Barcelona in early August during Circuit Festival is one of the world's biggest gay parties, and Maricas is not part of it. Not because the collective isn't invited — it's because Maricas exists precisely to be the Barcelona queer scene the other 51 weeks of the year, when the muscle armies have flown home to LA and the city belongs to its residents again. If you're doing Circuit in August, Maricas won't be on the flyer. If you're building a Barcelona weekend at any other time — the Sitges beach season, Carnival, Sant Jordi, or a random February — a Maricas Saturday is exactly the party a European queer traveler wants to find.

The venues

Barcelona's queer-underground venue rotation, as of 2026:

The Instagram is the source of truth. There's no permanent home yet; the touring-collective model is the model.

The crowd

Younger than Circuit's, more queer-mixed (women, non-binary and trans crowd well-represented — this is not a shirtless-army party), heavily Spanish and Latin American, and turning international as the collective's international profile has grown. English gets you by; a little Catalan gets you further. The vibe is warm, punkier than Berlin techno rooms, and unmistakably Barcelona in its rhythm — everyone eats late, arrives at the party at 2am, and leaves at 7 for a beach breakfast.

The Sitges connection

Maricas has a specific relationship with Sitges (see our Sitges city page) that most Barcelona nightlife doesn't. The seaside town's queer summer scene — bigger, gay-focused, more international — occasionally hosts Maricas dates as festival collaborations, and the collective has been part of the programming for events at Playa Bassa Rodona and the town's smaller queer venues. If you're building a summer Sitges-plus-Barcelona weekend outside Circuit week, a Maricas date is one of the anchors worth planning around.

"The first Maricas I did was a warehouse in Poble-Nou in 2019 and I stopped going to Sala Apolo's main-floor gay nights permanently. Once you've heard a Maricas set open with a slow perreo and finish with acid techno you can't unhear it. This is the future of Latin queer club music, and it's here already."

Practical

Where Maricas sits

The Spanish queer flag on the international underground map, and the natural pair for anyone whose ideal weekend combines a Berlin techno party with actual sunlight. Do Cocktail d'Amore or Herrensauna in Berlin one weekend and a Maricas Saturday in Barcelona the next, and you'll understand why the European queer underground is currently the most interesting scene in the world.
