Chubut Province, Argentina: The Honest 2026 LGBTQ+ Guide
The honest summary: Chubut is a huge, thinly populated slice of Patagonia (603,120 people in the 2022 census) that people visit for whales, penguins, Welsh tea houses and the Andes. It has no gay bar, gay club or gay sauna that we could confirm as open in 2026, in any of its towns. What it does have is a real, organized queer community: a Pride march that moves to a different town every year, Comodoro Rivadavia's own November march, and municipal diversity offices that do practical work like free HIV testing. Come for the wildlife, and treat the queer side as something you'll find through Pride and local groups, not through nightlife.
Legal in one line: Argentina has had same-sex marriage since 2010 and a gender identity law since 2012 (Ley 26.743); Chubut adds a trans public-sector job quota (Ley I Nº 621) but has no provincial anti-discrimination law of its own.
What the scene looks like now
We searched in Spanish and English across Puerto Madryn, Trelew, Rawson, Comodoro Rivadavia, Esquel, Trevelin, Gaiman and Puerto Pirámides, and checked Google Maps listings for each. None turned up a venue that presents itself as gay or LGBTQ+. Years ago El Patagónico ran a piece in which Comodoro residents asked for a gay or "alternative" boliche to open, and that gap hasn't been filled.
What you will find:
- Gay-friendly, not gay. In Puerto Madryn, the travel blog Nomadic Boys (updated September 2026) recommends Argentina Bar, Hipólito Yrigoyen 296 near the bus station, as a relaxed, gay-friendly spot with karaoke on Wednesdays. It is a mainstream bar, so we don't list it as a gay bar.
- A gay-friendly destination label. Puerto Madryn has trained hotels, restaurants and tour agencies with Argentina's LGBT chamber of commerce (CCGLAR) and the national tourism promotion agency since 2018. In 2021 the province signed a cooperation agreement with CCGLAR to promote LGBT tourism. Local press calls Madryn a "Gay Friendly destination". That label is about service training. It doesn't mean there's a scene.
- Pride and community work, covered below. This is where local queer life is most visible.
Dating apps work in the bigger towns (Comodoro, Trelew, Madryn) and go quiet in the small ones. Meet in a public place first, as you would anywhere.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- La Frontera (disco bar, Puerto Madryn): Nomadic Boys reports it did not survive the pandemic and has closed for good.
- Margarita Pub (Roque Sáenz Peña 15, Puerto Madryn): reported closed by Nomadic Boys, though some listing sites still show it. Even when open it was a gay-friendly pub, not a gay bar.
- Sauvage Club & Spa (Bv. Almirante Brown 2111, Puerto Madryn): an old listing with two reviews and no website. We found no independent source describing it as a gay venue and have removed it.
Pride: a march that travels
Chubut's main Pride event is the Marcha Provincial del Orgullo, run by a provincial organizing committee (Instagram @marchadelorgullochubut). It moves to a different town each year:
- 1st: Trelew, December 2019, about 600 people (Cholila Online).
- 4th: Puerto Madryn, Saturday 12 November 2022.
- 5th: Trelew, November 2023.
- 6th: Esquel, Saturday 16 November 2024, from Plaza del Cielo (Diario Jornada).
- 7th: Lago Puelo, Saturday 6 December 2025, the town's first time as host.
- 8th: Puerto Madryn in 2026. Organizers started meeting in April 2026, but the date was not announced at the time of writing.
Comodoro Rivadavia holds its own march as well. The 12th edition, on Saturday 23 November 2024, opened with a "Plaza Diversa" fair at the Museo Ferroportuario (Rivadavia and 9 de Julio) from 14:00. The march itself set off at 19:30, and a festival at the Centro Cultural followed. The 13th was on Saturday 29 November 2025, co-organized with the Federación Argentina LGBT+ and ATTTA. The 2026 date had not been announced when we checked.
Both are political marches as much as celebrations. Recent demands have focused on the trans job quota, hate speech and national cuts to gender and diversity programs. In 2026 organizers told Diario Jornada that some trans women hired under the quota had since been dismissed. A visitor is welcome to join; bring layers, because November evenings on this coast are windy.
Community and health
- Comodoro Rivadavia: the municipal Dirección de Diversidad LGBTIQ+, Dr. Andino Cayelli 436, shares its address with ATTTA's Chubut branch. With the Federación Argentina LGBT it offers free, confidential rapid HIV tests Monday to Friday 8:00–15:00, no appointment needed (local press, October–November 2025).
- Trelew: the municipal Programa de Género y Diversidad runs Pride Month activities. In June 2025 that included a weekly workshop at the Centro Integral de la Mujer.
- Provincial: in 2025 the province reorganized its gender area into a Dirección General de Políticas de Género y Diversidad.
The province, town by town
- Puerto Madryn: the tourist base on the Golfo Nuevo and the most cosmopolitan town. Most hotels, restaurants and tour operators are here, plus the seafront promenade. Whale watching for Península Valdés leaves from here and nearby Puerto Pirámides.
- Trelew: the commercial town inland, with the main regional airport and the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio. Gaiman, with its Welsh tea houses, is a short drive west.
- Rawson: the provincial capital, a small administrative town about 6 km from its beach suburb, Playa Unión.
- Comodoro Rivadavia: the largest city in the province and an oil town in the south, mostly a work and transit stop. It has the busiest airport and the province's longest-running local Pride march.
- Esquel and Trevelin: the Andean west, about 600 km from the coast, with Los Alerces National Park, the La Hoya ski area and the La Trochita steam train. It feels like a different province.
Nature is the reason to come. Southern right whales are officially in the gulfs from June to December, peaking in August and September. Punta Tombo, south of Trelew, is one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in South America (season roughly September to March). Note that the Perito Moreno Glacier is in Santa Cruz Province, a long way south. It is not a day trip from Chubut.
Where to stay
There's no gay hotel or gay-owned guesthouse we could confirm. Our hotel listings are mainstream places that welcome same-sex couples as a matter of course. In Puerto Madryn these include several seafront hotels on Avenida Roca and Boulevard Brown. Trelew and Comodoro each have a central business-style hotel, and Esquel and Trevelin have small lodges and hosterías for the Andean side. Under national law, a same-sex couple asking for a double bed is a non-issue. Book early for the whale months.
- Air: Trelew's Almirante Marcos A. Zar airport (REL) is about 61 km from Puerto Madryn. Puerto Madryn's own El Tehuelche airport (PMY) has Aerolíneas Argentinas flights from Buenos Aires Aeroparque. Comodoro (CRD, General Enrique Mosconi) is the busiest airport in the province. Esquel (EQS) serves the Andes.
- Road: long-distance buses link Madryn, Trelew and Comodoro. A car is close to essential for Península Valdés, Punta Tombo and the estancias.
- Distances are big: Puerto Madryn to Comodoro is roughly 440 km, and the coast to Esquel is about 600 km.
Safety
Argentina is one of the safer countries in Latin America for LGBTQ+ travellers, and we found no reports of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks in Chubut in 2025–2026. Holding hands in Puerto Madryn's centre or on the seafront rarely draws attention. In small rural towns people are more conservative and fewer are openly out, so read the room. Take the usual precautions with dating apps and at night.
