Gay Punta Arenas and Magallanes: the honest 2026 guide
The honest summary: Punta Arenas, the capital of Chile's Magallanes region, is a windy port of 132,363 people (2024 census) on the Strait of Magellan, and the starting point for Torres del Paine, the penguin islands and flights to Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica. Chilean law protects you here as fully as in Santiago, but the city has no gay bar, no gay sauna and no gay district that we could confirm in October 2026. The queer scene is small, mostly local and organised through Instagram and private parties. Come for Patagonia, sleep in a good central hotel, and treat any nightlife as a bonus.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations have been legal in Chile since 1999; the Ley Zamudio (2012) punishes discrimination and lets courts treat sexual orientation as an aggravating factor, civil unions (Acuerdo de Unión Civil) arrived in 2015, the Gender Identity Law in 2018, and full marriage equality with joint adoption took effect in March 2022 (Ley 21.400). The Kast government, in office since 11 March 2026, opposes marriage equality but has not changed any of these laws.
Bars and clubs
We could not find a single gay bar or club open in Punta Arenas in 2025 or 2026. Several mainstream places have been labelled "gay bar" by directory sites that copy each other (and, for a while, by us): Club K, Pub Dejavu, Los Brujos, Celebrity Club, Jekus, and the strip clubs Nanos and Las Casitas. None of them has any LGBTQ+ connection we could verify; Club K runs ladies' nights and reggaeton parties, Los Brujos is a dance hall that has been going since 1959.
The closest thing to a queer night we found is Candy Club (Espacio Candy), which ran "alternative parties" at Chiloé 543 and celebrated its second anniversary in January 2024 with drag acts. We found nothing from 2025 or 2026, so check its Facebook page before you plan around it. Locals use Grindr and Instagram to find out about private parties.
For a relaxed, openly friendly daytime spot, go to Be Happy Café on Lautaro Navarro 739. In February 2025 ITV Patagonia called it the first inclusive café in Magallanes and a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community; its motto is "sé quien eres" (be who you are).
Saunas and cruising
There is no gay sauna in Punta Arenas. The "gay saunas" that turn up in search results are couples' motels (Motel Eros, Las Mil y Una Noches), a massage centre and the spa of the Dreams hotel. We also found no cruising area named in any recent source, and we don't list one.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Aruba, a gay, lesbian and trans disco on the road to Río de los Ciervos, was written up by Radio Polar in 2008. There is no recent trace of it.
Deliriuz ("Los Torreones") still appears in Spartacus with no address or date. We found no other source.
Las Casitas (a cabaret, not a gay bar) had its alcohol licence renewal refused by the city council in July 2026.
Pride and community
Punta Arenas has held a Pride march (Marcha del Orgullo) for years, and it used to be bigger: El Pingüino counted more than 400 people at one march, and the Agrupación LGBTIQ+ Magallanes march of 25 June 2022 ran from Diagonal Don Bosco along Bories to the Plaza de los Derechos Humanos. In June 2023 the flag was raised at the Cerro de la Cruz lookout and the march was postponed for bad weather. In 2026 Movilh called a gathering on Sunday 21 June at 15:00 at Avenida Bulnes and Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, followed by a short march to the Plaza de Armas; La Prensa Austral counted fewer than 30 people. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; watch Movilh and La Prensa Austral in June.
Movilh, the national LGBTIQ+ rights group, is the most active organisation in the region: it publishes the yearly discrimination report and ran diversity training at the Universidad de Magallanes in August 2026. In Puerto Natales, the local group is the Red por la Diversidad Sexual Natales, known as Diversinat, which held the town's first Pride march in June 2019 (see our Puerto Natales area page). Radio Polar reported 70 same-sex weddings in Magallanes in the first years of marriage equality.
Safety
Day to day, Punta Arenas is a calm city and same-sex couples are legally protected. But hate crimes do happen here, and you should know about them. In April 2024 René Márquez Arismendi was murdered in a Punta Arenas motel by a man who had faked romantic interest; in October 2025 the killer got the maximum sentence, with the victim's sexual orientation counted as an aggravating factor. In August 2024 a trans woman was stabbed at a gathering in the city, and in June 2024 a gay couple was attacked at a shelter. Movilh logged 10 homophobic or transphobic incidents in Magallanes in 2025, up 11.1% on the year before.
Practical advice: meet app dates in a public place first (a café or a hotel bar), tell someone where you are going, and don't agree to go straight to a motel with someone you have just met. Emergency numbers: police (Carabineros) 133, ambulance 131.
Health and HIV testing
Every CESFAM and CECOSF (public family health centre) in the Magallanes health network offers a free, confidential rapid HIV test to anyone aged 14 or over. You only need ID; no referral, health insurance or Chilean residency is required. The regional health office also runs pop-up testing at the Espacio Urbano Pionero mall and the university.
Where to stay
None of the city's hotels markets itself as gay, but the central ones are used to international travellers, and in Chile a hotel can't legally refuse a same-sex couple a double room. Our picks, all within walking distance of Plaza Muñoz Gamero:
Hotel José Nogueira: in the 1890s Palacio Sara Braun on the main square, renovated in 2024, with the Shackleton conservatory bar.
Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo airport (PUQ) is about 20 km north of the city. LATAM, SKY and JetSMART fly nonstop from Santiago in about 3 hours 20 minutes, and the regional airline DAP flies to Porvenir (about 20 minutes) and Puerto Williams (about 1 hour 15). The Transbordadora Austral Broom ferry crosses daily from Tres Puentes to Porvenir on Tierra del Fuego in about 1 hour 45.
Buses run to Puerto Natales in about 3 hours (Bus-Sur, Buses Fernández), to Río Gallegos in Argentina in about 4 hours and to Ushuaia in about 12 hours. Torres del Paine is roughly 4 to 5 hours away by road via Puerto Natales, so most people base themselves in Natales for the park. Magallanes stays on UTC-3 all year, an hour ahead of Santiago in the southern winter. The currency is the Chilean peso (CLP).
Things to do
From late October to early March, boats run to Isla Magdalena, home to a Magellanic penguin colony of more than 120,000 birds. In town, walk the Costanera along the strait, climb to the Cerro de la Cruz lookout for the view over the coloured roofs, and visit the Palacio Sara Braun and the Braun-Menéndez house to see what the wool fortune built. The duty-free zone (ZonAustral) is a short taxi ride north of the centre. Pack for wind at any time of year. Days last almost 17 hours in late December and about 7 and a half in late June; there is no midnight sun and no aurora to speak of.
