The Lesbian Herstory Archives was founded in 1974 in Joan Nestle's Upper West Side apartment by Nestle, Deborah Edel and other activists. It holds the world's largest collection of materials by and about lesbians: books, photographs, periodicals, recordings, and personal papers. Since 1993 it has been housed in a Park Slope brownstone at 484 14th Street, bought with community donations. It is run entirely by volunteers and feels more like a home than an institution, with reading rooms, a kitchen and a garden. Opening times are limited and some visits are by appointment, so check the website before you go. Researchers and casual visitors are both welcome, and donations keep it going.
