It was founded in 2008 and draws people from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other former Soviet countries. It's an excellent place to study and read. I used to meet there once a week for conversation classes and practice, where people from various parts of the world came together with some teachers and students who was lerning English.

The fact that admission is free alone makes it worth a visit. You can explore many rooms on different floors.

Very pretty. It's just a shame that the most iconic spaces are restricted.

I have always loved going here since I lived in NYC for almost 10 years. I know their library staff is very nice and helpful. One thing that happened to me ruined my impression of this place. When I returned the research book I borrowed earlier to them today, I’m not sure if it was security or whatever position staff are in the Rose reading room. She questioned me, and her attitude made it sound like I was the thief trying to steal books. Saying she doesn’t know how I borrowed the book before, without specifying what label was on the book, and said she wouldn’t let me leave if I didn’t have that label. But today I’m just returning the book, and that’s all. NYPL, you should do better to train your staff on how to speak with visitors. Sad to say, I’ll never return to this place from now on, knowing how I was treated today.
