Under the stone arcades of Bern's Old Town, the shop lights go out early and the sandstone turns grey-gold under the street lamps. The Zytglogge clock tower strikes the hour, a late tram rattles down Marktgasse, and below the city the Aare runs fast and green around its loop. Switzerland's capital is calm, compact and comfortable with gay visitors, but it isn't a cruising city. In 2026 the scene comes down to two men's saunas, each with cabins and a party night, and the apps. For a cruise club or a fetish party, Zurich is an hour away by train.

Legal in one line: sex between men has been legal across Switzerland since 1942, same-sex couples have been able to marry since 1 July 2022, and gay saunas are legal private venues for adults. Sex in public is a different matter: see the box on the law and safety below.

How cruising works in Bern

Bern's gay scene is small and low-key. We could not confirm any darkroom bar, men's sex club or gay porn cinema operating in the city in 2026. What remains are two saunas a short bus ride from the main station, both with cabins and cruising areas, and Grindr and the other apps, which most men use to arrange a date at home or at a hotel. Weekday afternoons and early evenings are the quiet, regular hours; the party nights are when the saunas fill up.

The saunas: where the cruising is

Both saunas are outside the Old Town, about a kilometre from the main station in opposite directions. See our Bern saunas page for the listings.

Sauna Aqualis · Brunnmattstrasse 21, 3007 Bern (Mattenhof)

The more explicitly cruisy of the two, south-west of the station. Travel Gay, in a listing updated in May 2025, describes a Finnish sauna, a large steam bath, cabins, a maze, glory holes, cruising areas and films, plus a jacuzzi, a solarium and a bar with free snacks and Wi-Fi. It runs a themed party every Friday from 23:00. Travel Gay's audience awards gave it three stars in 2023 and 2024.

Hours (as listed by Travel Gay): weekdays 12:00–23:00, and Friday until 03:30 for the party; the listing gives Saturday hours inconsistently and none for Sunday, so check the sauna's website (aqualis-sauna-club.ch) or ring +41 31 382 69 69 before you go. We found no published price.

Sundeck · Länggassstrasse 65, 3012 Bern (Länggasse)

In the university quarter north-west of the station; take bus 12 to Unitobler. Travel Gay, in a listing updated in June 2025, describes two dry saunas, a steam bath and a whirlpool, cabins, a video room and lounge, a café-bar and restaurant, a smoking area, a small gym, massage and a rooftop terrace. On the second Saturday of every month it stays open until 03:00 for a themed party. local.ch lists it as a sauna, bar and wellness venue, and it won Travel Gay audience awards from 2021 to 2024.

Hours and prices: we couldn't find a current timetable or price list we could check, and some sessions may be open to other guests, so look at sundeck.ch before you go.

Closed: Studio 43 (Monbijoustrasse 123), a sauna and cruise bar with a maze, sling and glory holes popular with bears and older men, closed in August 2019, according to Travel Gay. Older guides may still list it.

Shops, cinemas and parties

We found no gay sex cinema and no sex shop with a cruising cabin area in Bern that we could confirm as operating in 2026, and no regular fetish party. If that's what you're after, Zurich has the Play! fetish parties, the MZ leather shop and Renos Relax, a sauna with BDSM rooms that stays open until 04:00 at weekends: see our Zurich cruising guide.

Outdoors and in public

Like every city, Bern has riverside paths, parks and woods that old forums associate with men looking for each other. We don't send you to any of them: they are busy public places used by joggers, families and the summer swimmers on the Aare, and the law below applies. The saunas are legal, private and a ten-minute bus ride from the station.

The law and your safety:

    • Sexual harassment (Art. 198 StGB): under Article 198 of the Swiss Criminal Code, anyone who performs a sexual act in front of someone who does not expect it, and thereby causes offence, can be fined (Busse). It is prosecuted on complaint, so it only takes one passer-by who objects.
    • Exhibitionism (Art. 194 StGB): since the reform of Swiss sexual criminal law on 1 July 2024, an exhibitionist act is punished with a fine, and a serious case with a monetary penalty (Geldstrafe); it is also prosecuted on complaint.
    • Robbery: Bern is a safe city, but quiet paths and strangers' flats are where thieves look for people who won't go to the police. Carry only your phone, one card and a little cash.
    • App dates: meet first somewhere public, tell a friend where you're going and share your location.
    • Police: if officers approach you, stay calm and polite and show your ID. Carry it with you.
    • Emergency: call 117 for the police, 144 for an ambulance, or 112.

A Bern evening, the local way

Bern runs at a gentler pace than Zurich. In summer, locals walk upstream along the Aare, jump in and let the current carry them back towards the Marzili baths, then dry off with a beer on the riverbank. In colder months, the arcades of the Old Town are the place for a long supper: the Berner Platte, a heavy platter of smoked and boiled meats and sausages with sauerkraut and beans, is the city's signature dish. Late in November, the Zibelemärit, the onion market traditionally held on the fourth Monday of the month, fills the centre with onion plaits, onion tarts and confetti from early morning. Afterwards, a bus out to Länggasse or Mattenhof is all it takes to reach the saunas.

    Practical tips

    • Entry and prices: everything is in Swiss francs (CHF). Neither sauna publishes a price we could check; as a guide, Zurich's saunas charged visitors roughly CHF 30–50 in recent reports.
    • Paying: cards are widely accepted, and many Swiss pay with the TWINT app; carry a little cash in case.
    • Lockers and phones: lock your locker and keep the key on your wrist. No photos inside, ever.
    • Consent: "Nei, merci" or "Nein, danke" (no, thanks) is enough, in any cabin, at any time.
    • PEP: after a risk, go to a hospital emergency department (Notfall) as soon as possible, such as the emergency centre of the Inselspital, Bern's university hospital. Swiss guidelines updated in November 2025 say to take the first dose ideally within 4 hours; PEP is no longer recommended after 48 hours.
    • PrEP and testing: Checkpoint Zürich, at Konradstrasse 1 near Zurich's main station, offers HIV and STI testing, PrEP and PEP for gay and bi men. In Bern, ask your doctor or the hospital about local testing services.
    • Getting home: on weeknights, check your last bus or tram before you settle in, especially from Aqualis on a Friday. On Friday and Saturday nights, Bern's Moonliner night buses run from the centre to the city's districts and the surrounding region; check times, and whether a night supplement applies to your ticket, in the BERNMOBIL or SBB app.
    • Zurich by train: InterCity trains between Bern and Zurich main stations run several times an hour and take about an hour. If you go for a late night in Zurich, check the last train back before you set out.
    • Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol and never dose someone else. Call 144 in an emergency.

    Pride: Zurich and the region

We couldn't confirm a Bern Pride date for 2026. The nearest big event was Zurich Pride: in 2026 the association cancelled its two-day festival because of debts and a loss on the 2025 edition, but the demonstration went ahead on Saturday 20 June 2026, when several tens of thousands of people marched, for the first time along Bahnhofstrasse, to the Landiwiese. In French-speaking Switzerland, the Pride romande was held in Lausanne in 2026. Pink Cross, the national organisation for gay and bi men, is a good place to look for queer events in Bern and plans for 2027.

    A few words of German

Bern speaks its own Swiss German dialect, Bärndütsch, but everyone understands standard German, and most sauna staff speak English.

    • Grüessech – hello (the polite Bernese greeting). Merci vilmal – thanks a lot.
    • Was kostet der Eintritt? – how much is entry?
    • Schliessfach – locker. Handtuch – towel.
    • Dampfbad – steam room. Kabine – cabin. Darkroom – the same in German.
    • Kondom – condom. Gleitmittel – lube.
    • Nein, danke – no, thanks. Always enough.
    • Notfall – emergency (department).
    • Proscht! – cheers, Swiss-German style.

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Bern?

In the city's two men's saunas. Sauna Aqualis at Brunnmattstrasse 21 has cabins, a maze, glory holes and a party every Friday from 23:00, and Sundeck at Länggassstrasse 65 has cabins, a video room and a roof terrace. Beyond that, most men in Bern meet on the apps.

Are there darkroom bars or sex clubs in Bern?

Not that we could confirm in 2026. Studio 43 on Monbijoustrasse, a sauna and cruise bar with a sling and a maze, closed in 2019. For a cruise club or a fetish party, most people take the train to Zurich, about an hour away.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Switzerland?

Sex between men is legal, but sex in public can be prosecuted. Article 198 of the Swiss Criminal Code punishes confronting someone who does not expect it with a sexual act, and Article 194 covers exhibitionism; both are prosecuted on complaint. Bern's saunas are the legal, safer option.

Where can I get PEP in Bern?

Go to a hospital emergency department as soon as possible, such as the emergency centre of the Inselspital, Bern's university hospital. Swiss guidelines say to start PEP ideally within 4 hours and not after 48 hours, so don't wait for a clinic to open.

Is it worth going to Zurich for cruising?

If you want more than a sauna, yes. Trains between Bern and Zurich run often and take about an hour. Zurich has four men's saunas, including Renos Relax with BDSM rooms and a weekend night sauna, and ticketed fetish parties such as Play!.
