Where to Stay: Miraflores and San Isidro

Most of Lima's gay-friendly hotels and nightlife are in Miraflores and San Isidro. These are both upscale, tourist-friendly areas. They have parks, ocean views, and lots of shops. People here tend to be more liberal, which makes them good bases for LGBTQ+ visitors.

Miraflores is particularly lively. You can walk to most restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops. Parque Kennedy, famous for its cats, is a casual meeting spot. San Isidro, next to Miraflores, feels a bit more business-focused and quieter, but it's still very welcoming. San Borja is further inland but has a good gay-friendly option and is easy to get to.

Nightlife: What to Expect

Lima's LGBTQ+ nightlife is busiest Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. You might find events during the week too. The atmosphere is generally friendly, with a mix of locals and tourists. You'll find everything from small cocktail bars to big dance clubs. There isn't a single "gay street," but many gay-friendly bars and clubs are in Miraflores, especially around Avenida Larco and Calle Schell. Expect diverse crowds, good music (Latin pop, reggaeton, international hits), and a relaxed vibe where people come to socialize.

During the day, people enjoy Lima's food, historical sites, and parks. Miraflores and Barranco (an artsy area south of Miraflores) are good for daytime exploration. They have cafes, art galleries, and great clifftop views. These aren't explicitly "gay spaces," but they're very welcoming and good for a relaxed day.

Tips for Your Lima Trip

Getting There

Lima's main airport is Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM). You can get a taxi or use ride-sharing apps (Uber, Cabify, Didi) from there. It's best to use official airport taxis or book a ride ahead of time for safety and a set price. In the city, taxis and ride-sharing apps are the easiest way to get around, especially between neighborhoods. Public transport exists but can be confusing for visitors.

Dress Code

Lima is generally smart casual. For daytime sightseeing, wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. For evenings out, smart casual is fine for most bars and restaurants. Some upscale places might appreciate a slightly dressier look, but you rarely need a suit or formal dress unless it's a specific event.

Ages

The legal drinking age in Peru is 18. Most bars and clubs will check IDs, so always carry a valid ID (passport or a copy). You'll see all ages in LGBTQ+ venues, from young adults to older crowds, depending on the place.

Safety

Lima is a big city. Be aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-lit, busy areas, especially at night. Use official taxis or ride-sharing apps, especially when going to and from nightlife. Keep valuables out of sight and watch for pickpockets in crowded spots. Miraflores and San Isidro are generally safe for tourists. Peru is mostly tolerant, but public displays of affection between same-sex couples might get different reactions outside of the most liberal areas. Use discretion in more conservative parts of the city. In the hotels and gay-friendly venues we recommend, you'll find a completely open and accepting environment.
