Minneapolis hotel options are concentrated in downtown, with some in Uptown and the neighborhoods to the south. For visiting the gay scene, downtown is the practical base — it is central, well-connected, and puts you within a short Uber ride of the main bar areas on Hennepin and Lyndale. Uptown puts you closer to the bars but has fewer hotel choices and is a bit further from the downtown skyway system that matters in winter.

Downtown Minneapolis is compact and walkable within its core. The skyway system — an enclosed network of second-floor walkways connecting most major downtown buildings — means that in winter you can move between your hotel, restaurants, and entertainment venues without going outside. This is a genuine quality-of-life feature if you are here between November and March.

The Hotels

    • The Hewing Hotel — Design boutique hotel in Minneapolis's North Loop neighbourhood — converted warehouse, rooftop sauna and hot tub, gay-welcoming culture, and a prime location for downtown nightlife and the Gay 90's.

Where to Stay by Priority

For access to the gay bar scene: Downtown or Uptown. Downtown gives you more options and better transport connections. Uptown is closer to Hennepin and Lyndale but requires a car or rideshare to most other parts of the city.

For Twin Cities Pride: Downtown is the most practical base — the parade route goes down Hennepin Avenue and the festival is at Loring Park, both within easy walking distance of most downtown hotels. Book well in advance; Pride weekend fills the city.

For a winter visit: Downtown, specifically for skyway access. Being able to walk between your hotel and multiple restaurants and entertainment venues without going outside is worth a premium when it is minus fifteen.

Budget options: The neighborhoods further from downtown — South Minneapolis, the University area — have cheaper accommodation but require you to factor in Uber costs to get to the bar scene. For short stays, staying downtown and paying more for the hotel is often cheaper overall than staying further out and Ubering everywhere.

Practical Notes

Minneapolis hotel prices are moderate by US standards. Downtown hotels run $120-220/night on average, with significant variation based on season and events. Pride weekend and major conventions push prices substantially higher — book well ahead for those periods.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is about 15 minutes from downtown by Blue Line light rail, which is convenient and cheap. The airport is a Delta hub with good direct connections from most US cities.
