Gay saunas in Taipei: the short version

Taipei has seven men-only gay saunas (同志三溫暖, tongzhi sanwennuan) that we can place on a map in 2026, split between two clusters. Four sit in Wanhua and Zhongzheng around Ximending, a few minutes on foot from the Red House bars: Hans, Peng-Qun, Xinhai (the old Big Shanghai) and the newer A.K SPA. Three are in Zhongshan to the north: Soi 13in, the busiest and most expensive; XL Club, a gym-and-cruise club with a roof terrace; and I/O, a small Japanese-style hattenba. Most are open 24 hours, entry runs from about NT$200 to NT$1,000 depending on venue, time and whether you are a local, and the crowd is overwhelmingly Taiwanese. If you search for 台北 男同志三溫暖 or 西門町 三溫暖, these are the places that come up, and this guide is what we could actually confirm.

The verified gay saunas in Taipei (台北同志三溫暖)

We checked every sauna against Google Maps status in October 2026, the Utopia Asia listings (verified 2023-2025), Travel Gay and The Gay Passport entries, and Taiwanese reviews and Dcard threads from 2025-2026. Where sources disagree we say so. Prices change often and some venues charge foreigners more, so treat the numbers below as a guide and read the board at the counter before you pay.

Hans Men's Sauna (漢士), Ximending

Address: 8F, Wan Nian Building, No. 70, Xining South Road, Wanhua District (萬年商業大樓8樓). Ximen MRT, about five minutes on foot. Some older English guides put it at 120 Xining South Road on the 2nd floor. That is out of date. The Wan Nian building is the current address in both Utopia and the October 2026 Taiwanese map listings.

When: Open 24 hours. Busiest on weekend afternoons and early evenings, and again after the Red House terraces wind down.

What to expect: Hans is the classic Ximending gay sauna, refitted in 2022. It has a steam room, dry sauna, showers, a dark room, small cabins, a TV lounge and a snack corner. Condoms and lube are free at the counter. The crowd runs from twenties to fifties and leans mature on weekdays. Reported entry is about NT$300-400, and English-language guides say locals and visitors pay the same price, which is not true everywhere in town. Google reviews are mixed (3.7), mostly about cleanliness at peak times.

Peng-Qun (朋群生活會館), Ximending

Address: No. 20, Xining South Road, Wanhua District, a couple of doors from the Paradise Hotel and a short walk from Ximen MRT.

When: Open 24 hours. Busiest at weekends.

What to expect: Peng-Qun, whose name means "group of friends", is older and smaller than Hans. The steam room and sauna open straight off a brightly lit shower area. Karaoke rooms and five or six small overnight rest rooms with blankets sit in the neighbouring building, reached through a back alley. Utopia's February 2024 check says it has no dedicated dark room, so expect less cruising and more bathing and resting. It is a cheap overnight option if you missed the last MRT, and the regulars are mostly local and middle-aged.

Xinhai Sauna (新海三溫暖, formerly Da Shanghai 大上海), near Ximen

Address: No. 12, Lane 80, Section 1, Hankou Street, Zhongzheng District (漢口街一段80巷12號). Ximen MRT is about five minutes away.

When: Open 24 hours. Sunday afternoon, roughly 13:00-17:00, is the traditional peak, and weekends can get very packed.

What to expect: This is the old-school Taiwanese bathhouse: warm and cool pools, dry and wet sauna, showers, lockers, a TV lounge, private cabins and two dark rooms, with a video lounge and karaoke in the basement. It is one of the cheapest saunas in the city and hands out discount coupons for return visits. The crowd skews older. Facilities are dated (Google 3.3), but it has character. Most English sources still use the Da Shanghai name, so ask for either at the door.

A.K SPA, Kangding Road

Address: No. 54, Kangding Road, Wanhua District, between Ximen and Longshan Temple MRT.

What to expect: A.K SPA is the newest name on this list. It rates well on Google (4.7 from about 100 reviews), and reviewers describe a clean, modern men-only space with friendly staff. It does not yet appear in any of the English gay guides, and Kangding Road is also Wanhua's massage street. Check its current format, hours and price by phone or on Google Maps before you go. We will update this entry once we have a first-hand report.

Soi 13in (ex-Rainbow Sauna), Zhongshan

Address: No. 13, Section 1, Minsheng East Road, Zhongshan District. Zhongshan Elementary School MRT (orange line) is closest. Shuanglian (red line) is about four blocks west.

When: Open 24 hours. The busiest window is about 18:30-21:00. Recent listings give happy-hour discounts around 18:30-19:30 and 23:00-00:30, but confirm on the venue's Facebook page (soi13ingaysauna).

What to expect: Soi 13in took over the old Rainbow Sauna and is the most modern of the big ones. It has a new locker room, jacuzzi, steam room, dry sauna, private cabins, a dark room, a maze and rest areas. The crowd is younger and gym-fit. Foreigner pricing is the big caveat. A March 2025 review reports a foreigner paying NT$1,000 while Taiwanese guests paid NT$300, and other reviews describe roughly triple prices for non-locals, including residents. Prices are posted at the entrance. Decide there whether it is worth it, and go in happy hour if you can. Google rating is 3.4 from about 430 reviews, and almost every complaint is about the price gap.

XL Club, Zhongshan (Yuanshan)

Address: 4F, No. 10, Minzu East Road, Zhongshan District. Walkable from Yuanshan MRT (red line). Phone +886 2 2598 8859.

When: Daily 10:00-02:00, to about 04:00 on some weekends.

What to expect: XL Club is less a bathhouse than a gym-and-cruise club. You get a clothing-optional gym, steam room, dark room, cabins, two mix rooms, a maze, a bar that serves alcohol, and a roof terrace for nude sunbathing. It runs monthly parties and theme nights. Entry is about NT$200-250, which makes it among the cheapest in town. A refundable deposit covers the towel and locker key. The crowd is mostly 25-40 and fit. Do not expect hot pools.

I/O Taipei (Hattenba), Zhongshan

Address: No. 12-1, Lane 49, Shuangcheng Street, Zhongshan District (雙城街49巷12之1號). Zhongshan Elementary School MRT, Exit 1. The sign is easy to miss.

When: Sources disagree. One gives roughly noon to 22:00 Monday-Thursday and to 23:00 Friday-Sunday. Another says noon to 02:00 on weekdays with longer weekend hours. Check its social media on the day.

What to expect: I/O is a Japanese-style hattenba spread over three floors: lockers and a TV lounge on the ground floor, showers, steam, a video room and karaoke in the basement, and dark rooms, play areas and cabins upstairs. You get a small towel, or a fundoshi on theme nights, and safer-sex supplies are free. Entry is about NT$300. There are no hot pools. The crowd is mostly in its 30s and 40s, and reviews (3.5) praise the staff but not the building.

Ximending or Zhongshan: which sauna for whom

    • First night, staying near the Red House: Hans. It is the easiest walk from the Red House terraces and charges the same price to everyone.
    • Classic Taiwanese bathhouse with pools, on a budget: Xinhai (Da Shanghai), especially on a Sunday afternoon.
    • Need a bed after the last MRT: Peng-Qun, with its overnight rest rooms, or any of the 24-hour places.
    • Younger crowd, modern facilities, and you accept tourist pricing: Soi 13in, ideally in happy hour.
    • Gym, rooftop and parties: XL Club near Yuanshan.
    • Japanese hattenba format and theme nights: I/O.

If you want a massage rather than a sauna, Scorpio Spa on Xinsheng North Road is a 24-hour gay spa in Zhongshan.

    When to go

Weekend afternoons and early evenings are the busiest across the board. Weekday daytimes are quiet and older. In Zhongshan the after-work window from about 18:30 to 21:00 is peak, which is also when Soi 13in runs its first happy hour. Ximending saunas pick up again after midnight, when the Red House terraces close and people drift down Xining South Road. The last week of October, around Taiwan LGBT+ Pride, is the busiest week of the year. Expect crowds and possibly event pricing. Pride is the last Saturday of October, and the next edition's date has not been announced yet.

Getting there and around at night

The Ximending saunas are all within 10 minutes of Ximen MRT (blue and green lines). The Zhongshan saunas are near Zhongshan Elementary School (orange line), Shuanglian and Yuanshan (red line). The MRT runs until about midnight. After that, taxis are plentiful, metered and safe, and Uber and Taiwan Taxi's app both work. A taxi between Ximending and Minsheng East Road costs roughly NT$150-250. A cheap trick is to stay near one cluster. Cho Hotel on Kunming Street is a short walk from Hans and Peng-Qun, and the Zhongshan hotels put you near Soi 13in and XL.

Apps and what happens outside the saunas

Grindr, Blued and Jack'd are all widely used in Taipei, and Blued is especially popular with Taiwanese men. Many locals check who is around a sauna before deciding to go in. Bars feed the saunas. A typical night starts at the Red House terraces or bars like Bear Junkies and Hero Bar on Kunming Street, or at G Star Club in Zhongshan, and ends at a sauna.

The law: what is legal in Taiwan

Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage on 24 May 2019, following a 2017 Constitutional Court ruling. Married same-sex couples have had full joint adoption rights since May 2023, and transnational couples can marry since 2023. Sexual-orientation discrimination is banned in education and employment. Gay saunas operate openly as licensed businesses.

That said, public decency rules still apply, and they matter for anything that looks like a sex venue. On 3 October 2026 Taipei police raided the BDSM-themed bar Commander D. in Ximending with a court warrant after 13 indecency complaints. They took 51 people in to give statements and referred the operator to prosecutors on suspicion of public indecency. The raid was widely criticised. Six officers were disciplined over degrading remarks, the mayor apologised, and around 500 people protested (Focus Taiwan report). It was an exception in a relaxed city, but it is a reminder to carry ID, stay calm and cooperative if police ever turn up, and know that customers in that case were released after giving statements.

Health: testing, PrEP and urgent care in Taipei

    • Free anonymous HIV testing: Taiwan CDC works with about 85 hospitals, health departments, NGOs and LGBTQ+ health centres to offer free anonymous HIV testing and counselling. The current list of sites is on the Taiwan CDC website.
    • Kunming branch of Taipei City Hospital (昆明院區): No. 100, Kunming Street, right in Ximending. This is the city's HIV and STI prevention centre and a provider in the government PrEP programme. Phone 02-2370-3739, ext. 1320.
    • PrEP: The publicly funded PrEP programme is capped at 9,500 places for 2026 and is open to Taiwanese nationals and foreign spouses who meet the medical criteria. Short-term visitors generally are not eligible, so bring your own supply or arrange a private prescription. PEP is available at hospital emergency departments. Go within 72 hours, and the sooner the better.
    • Community support: Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association on Roosevelt Road runs counselling and can point you to LGBTQ-friendly clinics.

Most saunas hand out condoms and lube at the counter or leave them in the cabins. Use them.

    Safety and etiquette

    • Bring your passport. Some saunas ask for ID at the door and may record it.
    • Cash. Several of the older places are cash only. Carry a few NT$1,000 notes and some coins.
    • Lockers: Valuables go in the locker. The wristband key stays on you, including in the steam room.
    • Phones: Keep them out of wet and dark areas, and never take photos. Being outed is still a real worry for many Taiwanese men, even after marriage equality.
    • Consent: A hand gently moved away or a shake of the head means no. Accept it the first time and move on. Do not wake people sleeping in the rest rooms.
    • Language: Staff often speak little English. Pointing at the price board works fine, and a few words of Mandarin (你好 ni hao, 謝謝 xiexie) help.
    • Drugs: Taiwan's drug laws are severe, and chemsex carries criminal risk as well as health risk. Do not bring anything, and leave if someone offers.
    • Foreigner pricing: If a venue charges more, it will be posted at the counter. Arguing does not help. Choose another sauna instead.

Nearby alternatives

Taipei's hot-spring areas in Beitou and Yangmingshan have traditional men-only nude bathing areas. Utopia lists Emperor Spa (皇池) on Yangmingshan as popular with local men late at night. These are mixed, non-gay public baths, so behave as you would in any public onsen: bathe, relax, and leave it there. Outside Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung each have their own gay saunas, an easy high-speed rail hop away. Keep this page honest

Taipei's saunas change names and prices more often than the guidebooks notice. Big Shanghai became Xinhai, Rainbow became Soi 13in, and Palace became Peng-Qun. If a sauna has closed, moved, changed its prices or its foreigner policy, or if we are missing one, use the "suggest an edit" link on the venue page or contact us. We re-check every listing against current sources and update this guide.
