Zurich's Top Gay Saunas: Your Guide to Relaxation and Connection
Welcome to Zurich, a city that blends Swiss efficiency with a friendly, inclusive LGBTQ+ scene. This guide walks you through the city's most popular gay saunas — relaxed spaces for wellness, socialising and discreet encounters. Zurich's gay life is compact but well established, and its saunas cluster mainly in District 4 (the Langstrasse quarter) with one long-runner in the Old Town, making them easy to reach by tram.
Below are the venues currently worth your time.
Paragonya Wellness Club: Zurich's Largest Gay Sauna
Spread over two floors, Paragonya Wellness Club (Mühlegasse 11) is Zurich's biggest gay sauna and its most comprehensive wellness experience. At its core is a luxurious whirlpool, a wet sauna and a steam room for deep, humid heat, while a video room and a dark room offer more intimate, adventurous spaces. The two-floor layout gives a real sense of exploration and space to move between quiet and social zones. The ambience aims for the premium end of the scale, and the scale of the place means it stays comfortable even when busy. Whether you want to unwind quietly or meet people, Paragonya's breadth of facilities makes it a first choice for many visitors.
Reno's Relax Sauna: A Classic All-Rounder
Reno's Relax (Brauerstrasse 16, in District 4) has long been a staple of Zurich's gay sauna scene, and for good reason. It offers a complete wellness experience: a choice of dry and wet saunas, and whirlpools that are perfect for easing tired muscles after a day exploring the city. Massages are available (around 60 Sfr for 30 minutes) for a little extra pampering. The bar area is a genuine social hub where many patrons spend their time chatting and connecting, so alongside the wellness side there's an easy, sociable atmosphere. It's a well-run place that balances solo relaxation with plenty of chances to meet people.
Apollo Sauna: The Old-Town Long-Runner
Apollo Sauna (Seilergraben 41) is one of Zurich's longest-running gay saunas, and — unlike the District 4 venues — it sits right in the Niederdorf Old Town, within easy walking distance of the city's gay bars. It's a more compact, traditional gay sauna with the usual sauna and steam facilities and a steady, friendly local crowd. Its central location makes it easy to combine with a night out in the Old Town, whether as a relaxed start to the evening or a wind-down afterwards. If you want something less sprawling than Paragonya and central to the bar scene, Apollo is the natural pick.
Note: the former Sauna Moustache (The Men's Sauna) in District 4 closed in early 2024 and is no longer operating.
Practical Tips for Your Zurich Sauna Experience
- Opening Hours: Most Zurich saunas open in the afternoon and run late into the evening, especially at weekends. Check each venue's website or social media for current times before you go, particularly around public holidays.
- Pricing: Entry typically ranges from about 25 to 45 Sfr depending on the venue and day. Extras such as massages cost more, as noted for Reno's Relax.
- What to Bring: Towels are usually provided, but bring your own flip-flops for hygiene and comfort. A small padlock for lockers is handy, though some venues rent them.
- Hygiene: Always shower before entering the saunas and whirlpools, and sit on a towel in the sauna.
- Respect and Consent: Always practise respect and ensure clear consent in all interactions. Zurich's gay scene is friendly and open, but personal space and boundaries matter.
- Discretion: Saunas are spaces where discretion is valued — be mindful of others' privacy.
- Language: German is the local language, but English is widely spoken in Zurich, including in the gay scene.
- Payment: Most saunas take cash and cards; it's useful to carry some Swiss Francs for smaller purchases.
Safety and Inclusivity for LGBTQ+ Visitors
Zurich is renowned for its high quality of life and progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, and Switzerland has strong anti-discrimination laws. As a visitor you can expect to feel safe and welcome across the city. In the saunas, the usual sensible precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings, secure your belongings, and speak to staff if anything makes you uncomfortable. The venues above are well established and have good reputations for a safe, respectful atmosphere. Enjoy your time in Zurich — may your sauna visits be relaxing, sociable and safe.
