The honest summary: Tallinn has three gay or queer bars, one gay sauna and no gay district, and it is the capital of the first former Soviet country with same-sex marriage. Come for the Old Town, a cheap night out by Nordic standards and a Pride that gets bigger every year. Don't come expecting Berlin.

How the scene works

There is no gay street. The venues are spread over the Old Town (Vanalinn) and the city centre (Kesklinn), all within walking distance of each other, plus one DIY queer bar out in the Noblessner harbour area next to Kalamaja. Locals mix freely with Finnish weekenders who come over on the two-hour ferry from Helsinki. Visit Estonia's own LGBTQ guide (updated April 2026) and vikervaade.ee, Estonia's LGBT news site, list the same short roster we do, which is a good sign that nothing big is hiding.

Kalamaja and Telliskivi, the converted industrial quarters west of the Old Town, are where the younger, artier queer crowd hangs out. Baltic Pride 2026 finished its march there with a concert at Telliskivi Creative City. The Rotermann Quarter gets mentioned in some guides as a queer area, but no LGBT source we found backs that.

The bars

X-Baar

Komandandi tee 2, just off Freedom Square. Visit Estonia calls it the oldest gay bar in Estonia: more than one dance floor, themed nights, a mixed crowd of men and women, and the party nights of Tallinn Bearty in April. Google lists it open from 16:00 every day, until 01:00 Sunday to Thursday and 05:00 on Friday and Saturday. Older guides still give the former Tatari 1 address; it moved years ago.

HELLo! Bar

Väike-Karja 1, first floor, in the lower Old Town a few minutes from Viru Gate. A small gay cocktail bar with a small dance floor; locals on Reddit call it fun and fairly touristy. Google lists 20:00–02:00 most nights and 21:00–04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Instagram (@hellobartln) has the current hours.

HUNGR

Peetri 6, Noblessner. A DIY queer bar, club and event space that calls itself "a local queer space open to everyone". It opens for events (drag, DJ nights, community evenings) rather than on fixed hours, so check @feel_the_hungr first. During Baltic Pride 2026 it ran a beginners' drag workshop.

Gay-friendly, not gay

Sessel Speakeasy (Viru 3, upstairs through a souvenir shop) is a salon-style cocktail bar with concerts and film nights. Travel Gay lists it; we couldn't find a second source calling it gay or gay-owned, so treat it as a mainstream bar that's comfortable for a first drink. Visit Estonia's guide also points to Heldeke! (a vaudeville theatre bar in Kalamaja with burlesque and cabaret), TOPS in Kalamaja and the Paavli Kultuurivabrik rave space as queer-friendly. None of them is a gay venue.

The sauna: Club 69

Club 69, at Sakala 22a in the centre, is Estonia's only gay sauna. Its own site calls it a gay, bi and swinger club, and that matters for planning: Sunday to Friday the guests are mainly gay and bi men, but Saturday (20:00–06:00) is a Bi/Swinger Party for men and women.

    • Facilities: Finnish, steam and salt saunas, a pool, a bar, video cabins, private rooms and a cruising area with a glory hole and a sling.
    • Week: Naked Party Tuesday and Thursday; youth day (men under 28, €1) Wednesday; Party Night Friday, open until 07:00.
    • Prices: €10 standard, €20 for guests on naked-party days, €3 for 22–28s, free for 18–21s except Saturday. Towel, slippers and condoms are included.
    • Extra: the club offers free HIV tests on site.

More detail is on our Tallinn saunas guide.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • Sveta Baar (Telliskivi 62): the alternative bar with drag and queer nights closed for good on 1 January 2024, ERR reported.
    • Café Amigo at the Viru hotel: never a gay venue (older listings, ours included, got this wrong), and it has since closed.
    • Angel, the Old Town gay club, closed in 2010. MaleSecrets (cruise club and shop, Pärnu mnt) is closed too.
    • G-Punkt, Ladies Pub, Hollywood, Lounge 24, Naksitrallid: none appears in any 2025–2026 LGBT source. Treat them as gone or never gay.
    • X-Baar at Tatari 1: old address. The bar is at Komandandi tee 2.
    • Pirita beach nudist zone: it existed for the 2008 season only; Pirita district refused to bring it back. We know of no gay beach or outdoor cruising area in Tallinn today.

    Pride and events

The Estonian LGBT Association (Eesti LGBT Ühing) runs Pride. Tallinn's first march was in 2004; marchers were attacked in 2006 and 2007, and the march only became regular again in 2017. Every third year Tallinn hosts Baltic Pride, which rotates with Riga and Vilnius. In June 2026 it was Tallinn's turn: 1–7 June, about 50 events and a march on Saturday 6 June from the Viru Gates through the Old Town to Telliskivi. ERR reported no incidents.

In the other years the city holds its own Tallinn Pride; in 2025 the march was on 31 May. Baltic Pride goes to Riga in 2027. Dates for a 2027 Tallinn Pride hadn't been announced when we checked.

    • Tallinn Bearty: a bear weekend every April since 2013. The 13th edition ran 16–19 April 2026, with a concert in the House of the Blackheads and nights at X-Baar. 2027 dates are not out yet.
    • Festheart, Estonia's LGBT+ film festival, is held in Tartu and Rakvere, not in Tallinn, over two weekends in late September and early October.
    • Kväärsaun, a queer sauna evening, has run during Pride week for several years.
    • The LGBT Association's monthly reading club (Lugemisklubi) and other community evenings are on our Tallinn events calendar.

    Practical tips

    • Getting in: Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL) is about 5 km from the centre; trams 2 and 4 take under 20 minutes. Ferries from Helsinki take about two hours.
    • Money: cards work almost everywhere, and drinks cost much less than in Helsinki or Stockholm.
    • Affection in public: fine in the Old Town, Kalamaja and Telliskivi. Estonians are reserved with everyone, so don't read quiet stares as hostility, but use the usual care late at night in outer districts.
    • Health: HIV testing is free and anonymous in Estonia. Besides Club 69's free tests, the AIDS support centre AIDSi Tugikeskus is at Paldiski mnt 36a. In an emergency, call 112.
    • Apps: Grindr is busy for a city this size, and in summer it fills with Finnish profiles.

    Where to stay

We don't know of a gay hotel in Tallinn; all our listings are mainstream. For walking to the bars, stay in or next to the Old Town: Hotel Telegraaf (Vene 9), Nunne Boutique Hotel or St. Olav inside the walls, or Rixwell Viru Square and Sokos Viru by the Viru Gate. If you're coming by ferry, Hyatt Place sits beside the port. On a budget, Viru Backpackers is on the Old Town's main street. See the full Tallinn hotels list.

FAQ

Is Tallinn safe for gay travellers?

Yes. We found no reports of anti-LGBT attacks in Tallinn in 2025–2026, and the 2025 and 2026 Pride marches passed without incident. Estonia's Human Rights Centre says hate incidents are under-reported, so use normal big-city care at night.

Is same-sex marriage legal in Estonia?

Yes. Parliament passed it on 20 June 2023 and it took effect on 1 January 2024, with joint adoption. A 2026 poll by the Estonian Human Rights Centre put support at 53%, and 82% among people aged 18–29.

How many gay bars does Tallinn have?

Three that we can confirm: X-Baar, HELLo! Bar and HUNGR. Club 69 also has a bar inside the sauna.

Is Club 69 men-only?

Sunday to Friday, the guests are mainly gay and bi men. Saturday is a mixed Bi/Swinger night open to men and women.

When is Tallinn Pride in 2027?

Not announced yet. Baltic Pride goes to Riga in 2027. In years when Tallinn doesn't host Baltic Pride it has held its own march in late May or June, like the 31 May 2025 march.

Is there a gay beach or cruising area?

Not one we can verify. The Pirita nudist zone lasted one summer in 2008. Club 69's cruising area is the only one we list.
