Last verified: November 2026. Seoul has no gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional hotels, and as far as we can find it never has had any. There is no Korean equivalent of a gay guesthouse with a pool and a rainbow flag. What it does have is two compact bar districts about 20 minutes apart by taxi. Itaewon is the international club side, built around the steep lane called Homo Hill (Usadan-ro 12-gil) and the clubs on Itaewon-ro below it. Jongno 3-ga is the Korean side: dozens of small upstairs bars around Nakwon Arcade, with an older local crowd. Every hotel below is mainstream. They are listed for where they sit, and in this city that is what counts, because the subway shuts around midnight and the clubs run until 06:00. One Itaewon listing, Hotel TwentyNiven, no longer seems to exist under that name, so do not book it from an old link. This guide covers which streets to sleep on, how far each hotel really is on foot, the hotel VAT refund most visitors miss, the gay calendar to mid-2027, and getting home at 3 am.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Homo Hill (Usadan-ro 12-gil) | Walk to the Jongno 3-ga bars | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gay-owned or men-only | None exist in Seoul in 2026 | n/a | n/a | Nobody, so stop searching. The hyugetels (sleep-over cruising venues) are not hotels and have nowhere to leave luggage. |
| On the strip, Itaewon | Hamilton Hotel | 4–5 min (2–3 min to PUBLIC and He's sauna) | Taxi, about 20 min | Club weekenders. The watch-out is an older building, Friday and Saturday street noise, and Halloween crowd controls right outside. |
| Inside the Korean bar block | The May Hotel, SimpleStay Hotel | Taxi, about 20 min | 1–2 min | Bar-hoppers, film-festival visitors and anyone who wants the palaces. Rooms are compact, and the tent bars outside are loud until late. |
| Luxury above Itaewon | Grand Hyatt Seoul, Mondrian Seoul Itaewon | Hyatt 15–20 min downhill; Mondrian 12–15 min | Taxi, 20–25 min | Couples who want a pool and a proper bed. Both sit on slopes, so you will take a taxi home. |
| Old-centre five-star | Lotte Hotel Seoul | Taxi, 15–20 min | About 18–20 min | Pride weekend (the June parade route is next door) and shopping. Lotte was not on the Q4 2026 hotel VAT-refund list. |
| Budget and hostels | G Guesthouse Itaewon (no link), Dominique Hotel Seoul, SM boutique hotel | G Guesthouse 2 min; others by taxi | Taxi | G Guesthouse is the only cheap bed that is actually on the scene. Dominique is in Sillim, which has its own small local scene. Check SM's recent reviews first. |
| Out of town or business | Glad Hotel Yeouido Seoul, Iruda Stay Gocheok Dome | Taxi, 20 min or more | Taxi, 25 min or more | Work trips and Gocheok Sky Dome concerts. Both are dead at night for a gay traveller. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
Seoul's gay nightlife comes in two pockets, and you should pick one as home. In Itaewon, the walkable zone runs from Itaewon station (Line 6) east along Itaewon-ro to the fire station. The big clubs are there: PUBLIC at number 192, PING and Ground at 195, dopamin at 189. From there it climbs Usadan-ro and the lanes off it: Homo Hill itself (Usadan-ro 12-gil), Usadan-ro 14-gil, and Bogwang-ro 59-gil and 60-gil on the downhill side, where Queen and Bear Cave moved. The whole area is under 400 metres end to end, but it is steep. In Jongno 3-ga, the zone is the grid between Jong-ro to the south and Samil-daero 30-gil to the north, centred on Supyo-ro 26-gil and Donhwamun-ro 11-gil. The Samchang Building at number 26 stacks SHUTTER, GLOVE, Mbar and DZBZ on top of one another. The walking times below come from the distances in our listings, with a hill penalty added where it applies.

Itaewon and Homo Hill
Hamilton Hotel at 179 Itaewon-ro is the only hotel in our listings that sits on the strip. The drag bar 2F and the lounge RUSH are 1–2 minutes away. PUBLIC and He's sauna are 2–3 minutes. The top of Homo Hill, at Eagle Seoul and Why Not, is 4–5 minutes, and the climb is real. It is a large, older hotel, rated around 4.0 from roughly 1,500 Google reviews. Guests mention dated rooms. Ask for a high floor away from Itaewon-ro if you want to sleep before 05:00 at weekends.
One thing every visitor should know: the narrow alley beside the Hamilton is where 159 people died in the Halloween crowd crush of 29 October 2022. It now carries a memorial. Each Halloween weekend police and crowd controls fill the street. In 2026, special operations officers patrolled Itaewon on 30 October. If your dates touch Halloween, expect barriers and closed exits at Itaewon station.
At 3 am, Itaewon-ro is lit, busy and full of taxis at weekends. Homo Hill is crowded until about 04:00, and then the side lanes empty fast. In winter the lanes get icy, and drunk descents of Usadan-ro 12-gil are the main injury risk. On a Tuesday the area is quiet and safe. On a Saturday it is loud and safe.
Hannam and the Namsan slope (luxury, with a taxi home)
Grand Hyatt Seoul on Sowol-ro sits high on Namsan above Itaewon, with river views. In our listings the nearest gay venue (PING) is about 600 metres away, which works out at 10–11 minutes on paper. In practice it is 15–20 minutes down stairs and switchback roads. Coming home is a short taxi ride, and nobody walks it at 4 am. It is a big international five-star, rated about 4.4 from nearly 9,000 reviews, with an outdoor pool that becomes an ice rink in winter.
Mondrian Seoul Itaewon at 23 Jangmun-ro is Ennismore's design hotel, south-west of the station. It is about 600 metres from SHIBA and the foot of Homo Hill, which our measure puts at 10–11 minutes. Allow 12–15 minutes because of the gradient. It has hosted gay party nights in past years, and its own bar is busy at weekends. It rates about 4.4 from more than 2,000 reviews.
Jongno 3-ga (the Korean bars and the old centre)
SimpleStay Hotel (11 Supyo-ro 26-gil) and The May Hotel (10 Supyo-ro 26-gil) face each other on the same lane, in the middle of the bar quarter. SimpleStay is about 50 metres, or 1 minute, from the Samchang Building, home of STUD, SHUTTER, GLOVE BAR SEOUL, Mbar and DZBZ. The May is 1–2 minutes. Shortbus, the easiest bar here for English speakers, is 2–3 minutes from either, and Z Hyugetel is about 2 minutes. SimpleStay rates 4.8 from under 300 reviews. The May rates 4.0 from just over 100, with small rooms.
The streets here are flat, and Jongno 3-ga station (Lines 1, 3 and 5) is at the corner. Changdeokgung and Ikseon-dong's hanok lanes are 5–10 minutes north. The noise comes from the pojangmacha tent bars on the main lanes, which run into the small hours, so ask for a back room. At 3 am the quarter is full of older men walking between bars and taxis idling on Jong-ro. It is about as safe as a city centre gets.
Myeongdong and City Hall
Lotte Hotel Seoul at 30 Eulji-ro is a multi-tower five-star beside Lotte Department Store. Our listings do not measure it to the scene, but on the map it is roughly 1.1 km to the Jongno bars, so allow 18–20 minutes on foot. Itaewon is a 15–20 minute taxi ride. Its real value is in June: the 2026 Seoul Queer Parade ran along Namdaemun-ro and Ujeongguk-ro, a few blocks away.
Further out
Dominique Hotel Seoul on Nambusunhwan-ro in Gwanak-gu is about 1,060 metres (16–18 minutes) from KAMUI, the bear bar in Sillim's small, young, mostly Korean scene. It is about 10 km from Itaewon. SM boutique hotel on Cheonho-daero in Dongdaemun-gu is 5.5 km from the nearest gay bar and rates 3.6. Glad Hotel Yeouido Seoul is a good business hotel in a district that is silent after 21:00. Iruda Stay Gocheok Dome in Guro is 12 km from the scene and only makes sense for a stadium concert.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
None, in 2026. We found no hotel or guesthouse in Seoul that is verifiably gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional, and the international gay travel guides updated this year list only gay-friendly mainstream hotels. Korea's gay scene grew up in bars and saunas, not in accommodation. Korean men usually live with family until marriage, so the private-space need was met by the hyugetel (sleep-over cruising rooms) and the 24-hour sauna.
The nearest things to men-only overnight stays are therefore cruising venues, not hotels. He's in Itaewon is open 24 hours. Z Hyugetel is in Jongno 3-ga; Mun Hwa, the old Jongno sauna, shut in 2025. Samson is near Gyodae in Seocho. Some travellers use them as a cheap bed for a night. They have lockers, not luggage rooms, and you should not plan a trip around them.
The one budget place that gay guides repeatedly recommend is G Guesthouse Itaewon at 14-38 Bogwang-ro 60-gil, which is not in our listings. It opened in 2014 and has dorms and private rooms, a rooftop with a view of N Seoul Tower, and breakfast. By position it is the closest bed to the scene: He's sauna is practically next door, and Homo Hill is a 2-minute walk. It is gay-friendly, not gay-run as far as we can verify. Confirm before booking that it is still trading.
Gay-specific private rooms do turn up on misterb&b, mostly in Huam-dong and near Seoul Station. Individual hosts change, so treat them like any home-share and read the house rules on visitors.
Booking rules that bite
- No joiner fees, but read the house rules. Seoul hotels do not run the Southeast Asian joiner-fee system, and international chains take two men in a double without comment. Hotels ask for your passport at check-in. Small guesthouses and serviced apartments often ban unregistered overnight visitors outright. The golden tip applies: book two guests from the start, so no question arises at the desk.
- No anti-discrimination law. No national law covers sexual orientation, so in principle a small Korean "motel" can refuse you. We have no recent reports of chains doing so. If you book a love motel for a cheap night (common, clean, and hourly by design), use a big booking platform with a written confirmation.
- No city tourist tax. Room rates include 10% VAT. At five-stars, check whether the quote also adds a 10% service charge, and compare total prices, not headline rates.
- The hotel VAT refund. Foreign tourists can get back the VAT on stays of 30 nights or fewer at government-designated hotels. The list changes every quarter: 118 hotels nationwide in Q4 2026, about half of them in Seoul. Lotte Hotel Seoul, The Shilla and Four Seasons were not on it. Ask the hotel before booking whether it is on the current list. A government proposal from August 2026 would end the scheme on 30 June 2027, earlier than its current end date of 31 December 2028.
- Deposits and cancellation. Five-stars take a card pre-authorisation at check-in. Korean guesthouses often sell non-refundable rates, and stadium-adjacent places like Gocheok fill up fast and inflate prices on concert nights.
- Halloween, Pride and August. Itaewon rooms book up for the last weekend of October. In August 2027, World Youth Day (3–8 August) will bring a Catholic youth festival of enormous size to Seoul. Book anything in early August 2027 now.
- Night buses. "N" routes run from late evening to around 05:00. Plan them on Naver Map or Kakao Map, since Google Maps does not do walking or driving directions properly in Korea.
- Taxis. Kakao T is the dominant app and the Uber app also works in Seoul. A night surcharge of 20–40% applies, and is highest between 23:00 and 02:00.
- Testing. KHAP (Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention) offers free, anonymous HIV and STI testing for foreigners. Its Itaewon Center is on the 3rd floor of 33 Usadan-ro, at the foot of Homo Hill. Check its monthly test schedule before you go.
- PrEP and PEP. The state PrEP programme requires National Health Insurance, so short-stay tourists should bring their own supply. International Clinic (5th floor, Hannam Building, 211 Itaewon-ro) lists PEP and PrEP among its services. For PEP out of hours, go to a university-hospital emergency department; Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital in Hannam-dong is the closest to Itaewon. Start PEP within 72 hours, and the sooner the better.
- Support groups. Chingusai in Jongno is the gay men's rights group. DDing Dong supports LGBTQ young people.
- Drugs. Korean law is severe and applies to foreigners. Expect prosecution, detention and deportation for small amounts, including cannabis, which is illegal in every form. Poppers are also banned in Korea, so leave them at home. Police have run a joint drug crackdown since August 2026 and inspected eight clubs in Gangnam, Seocho and Yongsan on 30 October 2026, finding no violations. Chemsex in a hotel room is a criminal risk, not a cleaning fee.
- Smoking. Smoking is banned inside bars, restaurants and hotel rooms, and street fines apply in designated non-smoking zones. Most hotels charge a cleaning penalty for smoking in rooms.
- App dates. We found no verified 2025–2026 reports of organised dating-app robberies targeting gay visitors in Seoul. The usual rule still applies: meet first in a bar, keep your passport and spare cards in the room safe, and tell the front desk you are expecting a guest. That last step matters more in a guesthouse than at a chain.
- The law. Same-sex sex between civilians is legal. Same-sex relationships have no legal recognition, and there is no national anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation. A Military Penal Code provision against same-sex acts by soldiers is still contested in the courts. It does not apply to visitors, but it explains why some local men are cautious with photos. Do not photograph inside bars without asking.
The gay calendar and where to book for it
Seoul International Pride Film Festival: 5–11 November 2026
The 16th SIPFF runs 5–11 November 2026 at CGV Piccadilly 1958, which is in Jongno 3-ga, a few minutes' walk from the bar quarter. If you are reading this before the opening, book SimpleStay or The May: you can walk from the last screening straight into Shortbus. Rooms in this area rarely sell out for the festival. The next edition is expected in November 2027, dates not announced.
TDOR March Seoul: Saturday 14 November 2026 (confirm)
The Transgender Day of Remembrance march has been held in Itaewon every year since 2018. It is pencilled for 14 November 2026, but organisers had not confirmed this as of early November. It is a rally rather than a party and does not affect hotel prices.
Seoul Queer Culture Festival: June 2027, dates not announced
The 27th Seoul Queer Culture Festival held its parade on Saturday 13 June 2026, along Namdaemun-ro and Ujeongguk-ro. The city again refused Seoul Plaza, and a Christian counter-rally gathered nearby, as it does every year. The 2027 dates are not announced as of November 2026. Expect a Saturday in June. For this weekend, sleep in the old centre: Lotte Hotel Seoul is beside the route, and the Jongno hotels are 15–20 minutes' walk and host the after-parties. Book once the date is out. Central hotels do not sell out for Pride the way European cities do, but June is busy anyway.
Korea Queer Film Festival: June 2027, dates TBA
The 2026 KQFF ran 26–28 June. The 2027 dates are not announced. It is run by the SQCF committee and usually follows the parade.
Moonlight circuit festival: 2027 dates not announced
Moonlight is Korea's gay circuit weekend. It is usually timed to the Liberation Day holiday in mid-August, and some years also has a winter edition: the organiser announced 28 February to 2 March for winter 2025. The summer 2025 edition ran 15–17 August. Listings for 2025 put the main parties at Paradise City in Incheon, beside the airport, not in Itaewon hotels. The organiser has not published 2027 dates as of November 2026. When it does, check the venue before booking. If the parties are at Paradise City, stay on Yeongjong Island. If they are in Itaewon, the Hamilton and the Mondrian are the obvious bases. Mid-August 2027 follows straight after World Youth Day, so book early.
Seoul Drag Parade: early October, 2027 dates not announced
The Seoul Drag Parade marches on National Foundation Day (3 October) from Haebangchon through Itaewon. Around it runs a two-week programme at Rabbithole Arcade Pub and Uplift Seoul. The 2027 dates are not announced. Base yourself at the Hamilton, about 12 minutes from Uplift.
Getting back at 3 am
From Incheon Airport. For Itaewon, take the AREX all-stop train to Gongdeok and change to Line 6, which runs straight to Itaewon station. For Jongno, take AREX to Seoul Station and then Line 1, three stops to Jongno 3-ga. Allow about 75–90 minutes and about ₩5,000 on a T-money card. The last trains leave the airport around midnight; check the timetable for your night. A taxi is about ₩60,000–90,000 (roughly US$45–65) including tolls and takes 60–70 minutes; confirm the fare on the meter. Limousine buses serve the main central hotels, so check route numbers on the airport's own site. Gimpo is 35–45 minutes by taxi.
From the bars. The subway stops running around midnight to 01:00, which is before anything good starts. After that you have two options:
Between 01:00 and 03:00 at weekends, taxis on Itaewon-ro are hard to hail and the app queue is long. Walk 5 minutes east towards Hangangjin or west to Noksapyeong and book from there. Itaewon to Jongno 3-ga is about 20 minutes off-peak.
Walking. Seoul's centre is safe on foot at night. The hazards are physical, not criminal: the stairs on Homo Hill, ice from December to February, and the Namsan slopes if you are staying at the Grand Hyatt. In Jongno, the lanes around Nakwon Arcade are dim but busy until late.
Health, safety and the law
Three picks
Budget: G Guesthouse Itaewon (not in our listings)
This is the only cheap bed in Seoul that sits right on the scene. At 14-38 Bogwang-ro 60-gil you are 2 minutes from Homo Hill and next door to He's sauna, and in this city that saves a ₩15,000–25,000 surcharge-laden taxi every night. Confirm it is still trading and take a private room if you plan to bring anyone back.
Mid-range: SimpleStay Hotel
It rates 4.8 and sits a 1-minute walk from the Samchang Building's five gay bars. It is the base for the Korean side of gay Seoul, the November film festival and the palaces. Take the subway or a taxi to Itaewon on the night you want to dance.
Splurge: Grand Hyatt Seoul
This is the best hotel within reach of Itaewon. It has river views, a pool that becomes a winter ice rink, and a 15–20 minute walk down to the clubs. The taxi ride back up is short and costs little. Pick the Mondrian instead if you want a busier bar scene in the hotel itself.
Frequently asked
Is there a gay hotel or men-only hotel in Seoul?
No. As of November 2026 no hotel in Seoul is verifiably gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional. Gay visitors stay at mainstream hotels near Itaewon or Jongno 3-ga.
Which hotel is closest to Homo Hill?
Among hotels, it is the Hamilton Hotel on Itaewon-ro: 4–5 minutes uphill to Usadan-ro 12-gil, and 2–3 minutes to PUBLIC. G Guesthouse Itaewon on Bogwang-ro 60-gil is slightly closer if you are happy with a hostel.
Which hotel is closest to the Jongno 3-ga gay bars?
SimpleStay Hotel and The May Hotel, on Supyo-ro 26-gil. Both are 1–2 minutes from the Samchang Building bars.
Can I bring a guest back to my hotel in Seoul?
At international chains, generally yes, without fuss. Guesthouses and serviced apartments often ban unregistered visitors, so book the room for two from the start.
Is there a hotel tax in Seoul?
There is no city tourist tax. Rates include 10% VAT, which foreign tourists can reclaim on stays of up to 30 nights at hotels on the government's quarterly refund list. Five-stars may add a 10% service charge.
Is Seoul safe for gay travellers?
Broadly yes. Same-sex relationships are legal but not recognised, and the bar districts are busy and safe late at night. The real legal risk is drugs, including cannabis and poppers, which Korean police prosecute hard.
When is Seoul Pride 2027?
Not announced as of November 2026. The Seoul Queer Culture Festival parade is held on a Saturday in June; in 2026 it was 13 June in central Seoul.
