Late afternoon in Porto Alegre, and the city turns west. On the riverside steps by the old Usina do Gasômetro, people sit with a thermos under one arm and a gourd of chimarrão in hand, passing it round while the sun drops into the Guaíba and the sky goes orange, then violet. On Sunday mornings the same crowd drifts through the stalls of the Brique da Redenção, and on Saturday nights it fills the bars of Cidade Baixa. Brazil's southernmost state capital is gaúcho country: barbecue, bitter mate, a cold winter wind and an accent the rest of Brazil teases. The gay scene is small for a city of its size and unshowy: no gay village, a handful of bars, a cluster of old-school saunas, and one of Brazil's oldest Pride marches, held in June for the first time in 2026. It's also a city that went under water in May 2024 and has spent two years drying out. Here's what we could confirm for 2026.
Legal in one line: same-sex couples can marry anywhere in Brazil (CNJ Resolution 175, 2013), the Supreme Court has treated homophobia and transphobia as a crime under the racism law since 2019, and since 2023 homophobic insults can be prosecuted as racial injury. Sex in a public place is a crime for everyone (ato obsceno, Article 233 of the Penal Code).
The law, in a little more detail
- Partnership and marriage: the Supreme Court (STF) recognised same-sex união estável in 2011, and the National Council of Justice's Resolution 175 of May 2013 obliges registry offices to celebrate same-sex marriages.
- Hate crime: in 2019 (ADO 26 and MI 4.733) the STF ordered homophobic and transphobic acts to be punished under the racism law until Congress legislates. In August 2023 it added that homophobic insults aimed at a person can be classified as injúria racial.
- Since then: in March 2024 the STF granted maternity leave to the non-birthing mother in a same-sex couple, and in February 2025 it extended the domestic-violence law, the Lei Maria da Penha, to male same-sex couples. Trans people have been able to change name and gender at a registry office, without surgery, since 2018.
- If something happens: report it to the Polícia Civil at a delegacia (police station) and say the word homofobia; local groups such as Nuances and Somos, both Parada Livre organisers, can help.
- Salgado Filho airport closed to flights on 3 May 2024, with traffic moved to the Canoas air base. Commercial flights resumed on 21 October 2024, with full operations planned for that December.
- Mercado Público: the historic market closed on 3 May 2024, partly reopened after 41 days and was fully open again on 18 June 2024, with 53 shops, stalls and restaurants.
- Usina do Gasômetro: the former power station on the riverfront, closed to the public for eight years, reopened on 26 August 2025 after a full restoration of more than 12,000 m², with a new square linking it to the six-kilometre Orla do Guaíba.
- Flood defences: the Mauá wall along Centro has been fully reviewed and repaired, and dikes have been raised to 5.8 metres in several districts, with more works scheduled through 2026 and 2027.
- Eko Residence Hotel: an eco-minded hotel near Parque Farroupilha that uses solar power and rainwater collection, a walk from the UFRGS central campus, Santa Casa hospital and the Theatro São Pedro.
- Novotel Porto Alegre Três Figueiras, in the Três Figueiras district, and Hotel Moov and Dan Inn Express: check the location against where you'll spend your evenings.
- Motel Porto dos Casais: a reminder that a Brazilian motel is a love hotel, rented by the hour or the night, with no questions asked about who you bring.
- Churrasco: Rio Grande do Sul is the home of Brazilian barbecue. Sunday lunch is the ritual: slow-grilled beef, sausage and chicken hearts, with farofa and salad.
- Xis: Porto Alegre's late-night sandwich, a huge pressed burger loaded with egg, cheese, ham, corn and more. The name is the local pronunciation of "cheese". One is often enough for two.
- Chimarrão: if someone hands you the gourd, drink it dry until the straw gurgles, hand it back to the person pouring, and don't stir the straw. Say "obrigado" only when you've had enough: in the circle it means "no more for me".
- Outdoor cruising: GayOut doesn't list outdoor spots in Porto Alegre. Public sex is a crime, and robbery after anonymous night-time hookups is a known risk in Brazilian city centres. The cruise bars and saunas are the safer choice.
- Apps: Hornet is big in Brazil, often bigger than Grindr with locals, so install both. Meet in a bar first, and be wary of anyone who rushes to change venue or asks for a Pix transfer.
- Paying: cards work almost everywhere. Pix, Brazil's instant payment, needs a Brazilian bank account and CPF number, so carry a card and some small notes.
- Weather: summers are hot and humid, and in winter the Minuano, the cold southern wind, blows in behind the cold fronts. Pack a proper jacket from June to August.
- Health: the public health system, SUS, offers free HIV testing, PrEP and PEP. PEP must start within 72 hours: go to a public UPA emergency unit or a hospital emergency room and ask for PEP.
- bah: the all-purpose exclamation (wow, oh no, well); bah, tchê! is the full version
- tchê: mate, pal, used with everyone
- barbaridade!: "unbelievable!", for good news or bad
- tri: very, really (tri bom, "really good"; tri legal, "great")
- guri / guria: a guy / a girl
- bergamota: tangerine (the rest of Brazil says mexerica)
- cacetinho: a bread roll; say it with a straight face
- xis: the local giant sandwich
- não, obrigado: no, thank you
Neighbourhoods

Cidade Baixa: the bar district
The low-rise grid south of Centro is where Porto Alegre goes out, students and LGBTQ+ locals included. The LGBTQ+ bars are here: Porto Carioca and Purple Drinkeria, a small, friendly karaoke bar on Rua General Lima e Silva. See our Porto Alegre gay bars guide for the full, current list.
Bom Fim: Redenção and Bar Ocidente
East of Cidade Baixa, Bom Fim wraps around Parque Farroupilha, which everyone calls the Redenção: the city's living room and the home of the Parada Livre. On Avenida Osvaldo Aranha, Bar Ocidente has been open since December 1980 in an old house: a bohemian bar and nightclub that early regulars remember as a place where gay men mixed outside the gay-only circuit.
Sunday Brique: the Brique da Redenção, created in March 1978, fills Avenida José Bonifácio along the park every Sunday with antiques, crafts, art and artisan food. Come mid-morning, buy something you don't need, and walk on into the park, where half of Bom Fim is sitting on the grass with a chimarrão.

Floresta: saunas and cruising
Floresta, the older district between Centro and the riverside, is where most of the saunas are, along with Club 13, a men-only cruise bar on three floors. Two smaller cruise bars, Hole and Apartamento 21, are in Centro Histórico, and Thermas Point Sul, the most reviewed sauna, is in Rio Branco. This is mostly an afternoon and early-evening scene: Club 13 opens 15:00–21:00. Details, prices and recent reviews are in our Porto Alegre gay saunas guide and Porto Alegre cruising guide.
Quarto Distrito: the riverside in transition
North of Centro, the 4º Distrito is the old, low-lying industrial riverside of Navegantes and its neighbours. It took some of the worst of the 2024 flood. Since then its pumping stations have been fitted with valves to stop the Guaíba flowing back into the streets, and a renewal programme funded by the World Bank and the French development agency AFD, Centro+4D, is due to run into the second half of 2027. Expect building sites and empty warehouses alongside new projects; go by car, not on foot after dark.

The city after the 2024 floods
In May 2024 the Guaíba reached 5.37 metres at the Cais Mauá, against a flood level of 3 metres, beating the 1941 record of 4.76 metres. Water ran through Centro Histórico, the Quarto Distrito and beyond. Two years on, most of what a visitor needs is working again:
Sunset on the Orla
The Orla do Guaíba, the landscaped riverfront running south from the Gasômetro, is where Porto Alegre watches the sun go down over the water: joggers, couples, skaters, families and plenty of same-sex couples. It's at its best on a clear evening in spring or autumn. Walk it while there are people around, and order a car home rather than walking back through Centro after dark.

Where to stay
Staying near the Redenção puts you between Cidade Baixa's bars and Bom Fim; Centro Histórico is convenient by day but quiet at night. Hotels in GayOut's Porto Alegre list include:

Safety and practical tips
Centro after dark: the streets of Centro Histórico, and parts of Floresta and the Quarto Distrito, empty out at night. Use Uber or 99 door to door: order the car from inside, step out when it's at the door, keep your phone out of sight on the street, and carry little cash.
Closed for now: Venezianos Pub Café ("o Venê"), on Rua Joaquim Nabuco in Cidade Baixa, an LGBTQIA+ bar for some 26 years, was shut by city inspectors on Saturday 29 August 2026, mid drag show, in a dispute over its licence category. The bar contests the decision, and the Parada Livre, Nuances, Somos and others rallied outside under the banner "O Venê não vai fechar!". Check its social media before you go.
Parada Livre: Porto Alegre Pride
The Parada Livre was first organised in 1997 by the Nuances group, and in November 2025 the city council voted unanimously to make it part of Porto Alegre's intangible cultural heritage. For years it was a December event (the 28th edition was on 7 December 2025), but the 29th Parada Livre took place on Sunday 14 June 2026 in the Redenção, under the theme "Nosso Orgulho na Urna" ("Our Pride at the Ballot Box"), with programming from midday and a late-afternoon march around the park behind six sound trucks. Some 15 groups organise it, among them Nuances and Somos. The 30th edition is in preparation; its date had not been announced at the time of writing.

Frequently asked questions
Is Porto Alegre gay-friendly?
Largely, yes. Porto Alegre is a university city with a long activist history: the Parada Livre has run since 1997 and the city council made it part of the city's intangible heritage in 2025. Brazilian law protects you, but use Uber or 99 at night, especially in Centro.

Where is the gay area of Porto Alegre?
There's no gay village. The bars are mostly in Cidade Baixa, with Bar Ocidente in neighbouring Bom Fim, and the saunas and the Club 13 cruise bar cluster in Floresta. Redenção park, between Cidade Baixa and Bom Fim, is the social heart and hosts the Parada Livre.
Is same-sex marriage legal in Brazil?
Yes. Since CNJ Resolution 175 of 2013, registry offices across Brazil must marry same-sex couples. Since 2019 the Supreme Court has treated homophobia and transphobia as a crime under the racism law, and in 2023 it ruled that homophobic insults can be prosecuted as racial injury.
When is Porto Alegre Pride?
The Parada Livre used to be held in December, but the 29th edition took place on Sunday 14 June 2026 in Parque Farroupilha (Redenção). The date of the 30th edition had not been announced at the time of writing, so check the organisers' channels.
Has Porto Alegre recovered from the 2024 floods?
For visitors, largely yes. Salgado Filho airport resumed commercial flights on 21 October 2024, the Mercado Público reopened in June 2024, and the restored Usina do Gasômetro reopened in August 2025. Flood-defence works are still under way in 2026.
