Last verified: October 2026. Fort Lauderdale is the one American beach town that still has a working set of men-only, clothing-optional guesthouses, and the one place in this series where the hotels and the bars are in different towns. The guesthouses cluster behind Sebastian Street beach on the barrier island and in the leafy streets east of downtown; the bars are five kilometres inland on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, a separate city with its own inns and the second-highest share of same-sex couples in the United States. Nobody walks between the two. This guide gives you the real minutes and dollars for that gap, what each guesthouse actually is (men-only, mixed, or merely "gay-friendly" with a $60 resort fee), who closed (Cheston House; the Royal Palms as a gay resort), the day-pass rules, the Florida laws a visitor meets in 2026, and what Stonewall Pride, Wicked Manors, Pig Week and the Boat Show do to prices.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Beach / Wilton Drive | Vibe | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men only, by the beach | The Grand Resort & Spa · The Worthington, Alcazar & Villa Venice | Beach 5 min on foot / Drive 15–20 min by car | 21+, clothing-optional courtyards and hot tubs, spa, 24-hour pools; one management, four buildings on North Birch Road | Men who want the gay beach at the end of the street and a social, clothing-optional pool |
| Men only, garden resort | Pineapple Point · The Big Coconut | Both in the middle: 8–10 min by car to either | Two acres of tropical garden, two pools, breakfast and happy hour included (Pineapple Point); a smaller, cheaper, friendlier version of the same idea (Big Coconut) | Couples and solo travellers who want a resort day and a car or rideshare at night |
| Men only, leather | Inn Leather | South of the river; car to both | A sling in every room, a dungeon suite, day passes, 2-hour room rentals; the Pig Week address | Leather and fetish travellers; the Ramrod is a 7-minute drive |
| Walk to the bars | Ed Lugo Resort · Inn On The Drive · Island Sands Inn · The Cabanas | Drive 1–4 min on foot (Cabanas 25–30, or a 5-min ride) / beach 15 min by car | Wilton Manors has no chain hotel, only inns: Ed Lugo's 1950s bungalows (adults-only, clothing-optional), two small inns a block off the Drive, and the men-only Cabanas on the river with two pools and day passes | Anyone whose trip is the bars; you still need a ride to the beach |
| Big beach hotel, mixed | Sonesta · Kimpton Shorebreak · Ritz-Carlton · Beach House Hilton | Beach 0–10 min on foot / Drive 20 min by car | Swimwear on, families in the lobby, rooftop pools, and $25–60 resort fees plus $30–65 valet on top of the rate | Those who want a proper hotel and do not care about a gay pool |
| Downtown, close to both | The Dalmar · Hyatt Centric Las Olas | Drive 10 min by car / beach 10 min by car | Design hotels on Federal Highway and Las Olas with rooftop bars; the Hyatt hosts the Splash pool parties; Brightline station five minutes away | Visitors splitting time between Wilton Manors, the beach and Miami |
The distance problem, in minutes and dollars
Fort Lauderdale's gay geography is a triangle. Sebastian Street beach (the rainbow flags on A1A between Las Olas and Sunrise Boulevard, public lot at 3031 Sebastian Street, lifeguard tower, meters full by 10:00 at weekends) is on the barrier island. Wilton Drive, where almost every bar is, runs from NE 20th Street to Five Points in the separate city of Wilton Manors, 5–6 km north-west across the Intracoastal and the Middle River. Las Olas and downtown sit between them. There is no useful bus between the beach and the Drive at night, the free LauderGo shuttles stop in the early evening and never reach Wilton Manors, and nobody walks the Sunrise Boulevard bridge after dark. Budget $12–20 per Uber or Lyft each way between beach and Drive, 15–20 minutes, and more after 02:00 on Saturdays. From that fact the whole guide follows: sleep where you will spend your days, and ride to the other.
- North Birch Road, behind the gay beach (Grand, Worthington, Alcazar, Villa Venice): two blocks to the sand, four to six minutes on foot; the Royal Palms, Rolo and Kimpton Shorebreak are on the same streets. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is across A1A, with a tunnel under the road from the beach.
- Victoria Park and Poinsettia Heights (Pineapple Point, Big Coconut, Little Coconut, Coral Reef, Victoria Park Hotel): quiet residential streets between Federal Highway and the river. Pineapple Point is 2.3 miles from the Drive and 2.5 from the beach, 8–10 minutes by car to each; the Big Coconut is "one bridge" from the beach, which means a 40-minute walk or an 8-minute ride. LeBoy, the Latin bar, and the Ramrod are the closest nightlife, both on the Fort Lauderdale side.
- Wilton Manors (Ed Lugo, Inn On The Drive, Island Sands, Coastal Guesthouse, Solstice at Wilton, Casa Hermès, Fantasy Island Inn, the Cabanas): the inns a block off the Drive put Georgie's Alibi, Hunters, the Eagle and The Manor within five minutes on foot. The Cabanas is a mile east on the river, 25–30 minutes on foot or a $7 ride. Nothing here is near the sea.
- South of the New River (Inn Leather, Broward Health Medical Center, the port): ten minutes from the airport, seven from the Ramrod, fifteen from the beach by car.
- Downtown and Las Olas (Dalmar, Hyatt Centric): the Brightline station, the Himmarshee bars (straight, open until 04:00), and a ten-minute ride to either beach or Drive.
- Cheston House (520 N Birch Rd), the small, perfectly rated men's guesthouse by the beach, closed in 2024; its domain now points elsewhere. Elysium, Windamar Beach Resort and Orton Terrace on the same blocks have no live websites and no 2026 presence; treat them as gone. The beach cluster is now the Grand and the Worthington group, full stop.
- Royal Palms changed hands and dropped its gay identity; see the table.
- Coconut Cove by the beach closed and its team now runs The Big Coconut inland. Schubert Resort became the mainstream Victoria Park Hotel in 2014.
- Pride Fort Lauderdale, the February beach festival on A1A, has not been held since 2023; it is now run by Stonewall Pride and a relaunch away from the beach is talked about for early 2027 without a date. Listings that show February 2026 or January 2027 dates are placeholders.
- On Wilton Drive, Rumors and its successor Matty's are closed, New Moon became LIT, Hamburger Mary's became The Well, Tropics is closed; Next Bar and No Manors are the newcomers. The Eagle opened in 2019, not 2024. The Ramrod is in Fort Lauderdale (1508 NE 4th Ave), not in Oakland Park or Wilton Manors, whatever the listings say.
- The Stonewall National Museum closed its Wilton Drive gallery in 2020 and operates from 1300 E Sunrise Boulevard; the World AIDS Museum moved to ArtServe next door.
- Second guests: the men-only houses charge rather than refuse: $25 a night at the Cabanas, $100 at the Grand. At the Grand and Worthington, outside visitors otherwise get in only on event days; Pineapple Point, the Cabanas, Inn Leather and Inn On The Drive sell day passes ($15–40) that double as the visitor policy by day. Book for two if there is any chance of company, and ask the desk about overnight visitors when you check in; none of them publishes the rule.
- Age and ID: 21 to drink, and most Wilton Drive venues and Wicked Manors are 21+ at the door; the Grand and Worthington are 21+, Coral Reef 25+. Passport or driving licence, always.
- Taxes and fees: 7% sales tax plus 6% Broward tourist tax = 13% on every room, resort fees included. Guesthouses generally have no resort fee and free parking (the Worthington charges $10, the Grand's fee depends on whom you ask); beach hotels charge $25–61 a night in resort fees and $32–65 for valet, so a $250 Hilton room is $360 by the time you leave.
- Nudity: legal only on private property, which is what the guesthouses are. Sebastian Street beach is swimwear-on and no alcohol on the sand; the nearest legal nude beach is Haulover in Miami-Dade, 45 minutes south, with the gay crowd at the far north end (towers 15–17), $7 parking. The woods of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park behind the gay beach (listing) are a historic cruising ground where park police do ticket lewd conduct; the day pass or the bathhouse is the legal version.
- The drag law: Florida's 2023 "Protection of Children" act, which threatens venues that admit minors to drag shows, was blocked for three years and became enforceable again on 4 August 2026 after an appeals-court ruling. For a visitor the effect is door policy: drag brunches and shows on the Drive are 21+ or 18+, and all-ages drag is gone. The 2023 bathroom law applies only to government buildings (and arguably the county-owned airport), not to hotels, bars or beaches.
- Advisories: Equality Florida and the HRC issued travel advisories for the state in 2023 and never withdrew them; neither is a boycott. Broward County's human-rights law covers sexual orientation and gender identity, and both Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors score 100 on the HRC municipal index. The 2026 legislature killed the Pride-flag ban for the fourth year and wrote a Pride-permit exemption into its anti-DEI bill.
- Hurricanes: season is 1 June to 30 November; 2026 spared South Florida (the only US landfall was on the Panhandle in October). Guesthouse cancellation terms are strict (Cabanas: 14 days, 60 at Christmas), so insure a summer or autumn trip. The summer of 2026 was Fort Lauderdale's hottest on record.
- Budget: Inn Leather (men only, from $140, breakfast and parking in); Inn On The Drive ($100–200 a block from the bars); The Little Coconut (efficiencies from $139).
- Mid-range: The Big Coconut (men only, the friendliest house in town); Ed Lugo Resort (walk to the Drive, clothing-optional pool); The Worthington (men only, two blocks from the gay beach, $10 parking).
- Upper: Pineapple Point (the resort of the series); The Grand Resort & Spa (spa, beach, men only); The Cabanas (two pools on the river, day-pass energy).
- Mixed luxury: The Dalmar downtown, the Ritz-Carlton on the beach.
- Airport: FLL is 8–9 km from the beach guesthouses and 12 km from Wilton Manors. Uber and Lyft pick up on the lower arrivals level (Terminals 1–2 at the zone past the taxi podium; Terminals 3–4 on the ground floor of the Palm Garage); expect $25–35 to the beach and $22–35 to Wilton Manors, more at peak banks; taxis $30–40 with tip and no fixed beach fare. Inn Leather is ten minutes away.
- A car, or not: you do not need one for beach, Drive and downtown if you accept $12–20 rides; you need one for the Everglades airboats (Sawgrass, 30 minutes west, about $30) and Key West (four hours, or Spirit's 50-minute nonstop from FLL). Guesthouses park you free; beach hotels charge $32–65 valet; on Wilton Drive the meters and city lots are $2 an hour until 03:00 or $10 flat for the evening, and the private lots tow.
- Brightline: the downtown station (101 NW 2nd Ave) puts Miami 35 minutes away from about $15–39, but the last trains run around 21:30–22:00, so a Miami night out ends in a $70–90 ride home. The free LauderGo Beach Link shuttle and water trolley cover the beach and New River by day; the Water Taxi is $38 all day or $25 after 17:00; county buses are $2 (route 11 runs A1A). None of it reaches Wilton Manors usefully at night.
- Closing times: Wilton Manors bars close at 02:00 (03:00 on permitted event nights; there is no 04:00 licence despite what you will hear); Fort Lauderdale's downtown Himmarshee district runs to 04:00 on weekends and had a shooting in December 2025 that ended outdoor drink sales there. The Las Olas drawbridge opens at a quarter past and a quarter to the hour; add ten minutes.
- At night: Wilton Drive is lit and policed and the incidents of 2025–26 were a late-night brawl and a domestic stabbing in a car park, not attacks on visitors; car break-ins at beach lots and the airport garage are the real local sport, so leave nothing visible.
- PEP and PrEP on the Drive: the Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 N Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors) opened a free PrEP, PEP, DoxyPEP and STI clinic in July 2026: Tuesday and Thursday 12:30–19:30, Saturday 12:30–16:00; free rapid testing Tuesday and Thursday 11:30–19:00; the AHF Wellness Center on the same campus runs Tuesday and Thursday 12:00–19:00. Latinos Salud (1401 NE 26th St) does free testing and PrEP navigation for the uninsured, Monday to Friday until 21:00. PEP must start within 72 hours; outside clinic hours go to a 24-hour emergency room: Holy Cross (4725 N Federal Highway, closest to Wilton Manors), Broward Health Imperial Point (6401 N Federal Highway) or Broward Health Medical Center (1600 S Andrews Avenue, downtown). Non-US visitors: an uninsured ER visit runs into four figures, so carry insurance.
- Context: the Miami–Fort Lauderdale metro has the highest HIV diagnosis rate of any large US metro; testing is free and everywhere, and condoms are in every bar.
- Beach: rip currents are South Florida's deadliest weather hazard; swim near a lifeguard tower, respect red and double-red flags, purple means jellyfish or man-o-war. Sargassum seaweed was the second-worst on record in 2026, mostly April to August.

Health
Fort Lauderdale in a paragraph
Gay Fort Lauderdale began in 1972 when John Castelli reopened the Marlin Beach Hotel opposite what is now the gay beach as an openly gay resort, with the Poop Deck disco and "Tea by the Sea", and survived the city's 1976 "the gays must go" campaign; the Copa on Federal Highway carried the torch from 1975 until Hurricane Wilma finished it in 2005. Wilton Manors elected the second all-LGBTQ city commission in the country in 2018 and counts about 14% of its households as same-sex couples, second only to Provincetown. Do the things everyone does: Sunday tea dance at Hunters or Scandals, brunch at Rosie's, stone crab claws between 15 October and 1 May, an airboat in the Everglades, an afternoon in the Stonewall National Museum's archives, a night at Club Fort Lauderdale (24 hours, pool and gym, downtown) or the 50-year-old Clubhouse II, and the last drink at the Ramrod's first-Saturday Pig Dance. Season is December to April; summer is cheap, humid and stormy.

Frequently asked questions
Which Fort Lauderdale guesthouses are men-only and clothing-optional in 2026?
The Grand Resort & Spa and the Worthington, Alcazar and Villa Venice by the beach; Pineapple Point and the Big Coconut inland; Inn Leather south of the river; the Cabanas in Wilton Manors. Ed Lugo and Inn On The Drive are adults-only and clothing-optional but mixed. Cheston House closed in 2024 and the Royal Palms is no longer a gay resort.

Should I stay by the beach or in Wilton Manors?
By the beach if your days are sand and your nights are two or three bar trips a week; in Wilton Manors if the Drive is the trip. The two are 5–6 km and $12–20 apart by rideshare and there is no night bus. Pineapple Point and the Big Coconut split the difference at 8–10 minutes' drive from each.
Where exactly is the gay beach?
Fort Lauderdale Beach at Sebastian Street and A1A, between Las Olas and Sunrise Boulevard, marked by rainbow flags; public lot at 3031 Sebastian Street, lifeguard on duty. Swimwear on; the nude beach is Haulover, 45 minutes south.

Can my date come back to the guesthouse?
Usually, for a fee: $25 a night at the Cabanas, $100 at the Grand, and day passes of $15–40 at Pineapple Point, Inn Leather, the Cabanas and Inn On The Drive. Ask the desk about overnight visitors; book for two if you expect company.
Is there a bathhouse?
Two: Club Fort Lauderdale downtown (110 NW 5th Ave, 24 hours, pool, gym, steam, day pass from about $25) and Clubhouse II on East Oakland Park Boulevard, open since the 1970s. 321 Slammer on Sunrise Boulevard is a private men's cruise club without a sauna.

When is Pride?
Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors is Saturday 19 June 2027 on Wilton Drive. The February beach Pride has not happened since 2023; a relaunch in early 2027, away from the beach, has no confirmed date.
What do the Florida laws mean for a gay visitor?
Day to day, little: Broward County protects you in housing, work and public accommodation, and the bathroom law covers only government buildings. The drag law is enforceable again since August 2026, so drag shows are 21+ or 18+ at the door. The 2023 travel advisories from Equality Florida and the HRC were never withdrawn and are not boycotts.
