The honest summary: Salem is Oregon's capital and third-largest city, about 179,000 people in the Willamette Valley an hour south of Portland. It has one gay bar, Southside Speakeasy, and a busier queer calendar than its size suggests: drag nights, a gay men's social group, queer game nights, youth groups and a September Pride festival in Riverfront Park. What it doesn't have is a gay district, a sauna or a late-night club strip. Most visitors pair Salem with Portland, which is where the bigger gay nightlife is.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Oregon since 19 May 2014 (Geiger v. Kitzhaber); the Oregon Equality Act has banned discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity since 1 January 2008, and Salem's own city ordinance has covered both since 2002.
Bars and nightlife
Southside Speakeasy (3529 Fairview Industrial Dr SE) is Salem's only gay bar and the centre of its queer nightlife. It's in an industrial park in south-east Salem, so you'll need a car or a ride-hail from downtown, about ten minutes away. The bar's own site calls it an LGBTQIA2S+ food and show bar, and Google lists it as a gay bar with a 4.3 rating from about 340 reviews.
The weekly rhythm, going by the bar's calendar and the Salem Capital Pride listings in October 2026:
Tuesday: Salem Gay Men's Group, early evening (21+).
Wednesday: game night; Bricks and Booze (a LEGO night) on the second Wednesday; karaoke with the Mid-Willamette Queer Collective on the last Wednesday.
Thursday: drag bingo with the local drag court on the first and third Thursday, and House of Love, an open-call drag show, on the third Thursday.
Friday: a women's dance party, Friday Night Get Down, on the third Friday.
Saturday: Calienté XL drag shows on the first and third Saturday (21+).
Dates move, so check the calendar on southsidespeakeasy.com or our Salem events page before you go. Southside is also the home base of the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Willamette Empire, the regional drag charity court, which holds its balls and fundraisers there.
There's no lesbian bar in Salem and, since the Infinity Room closed in June 2025, no regular drag brunch either. Big touring drag shows play the 1926 Elsinore Theatre downtown (170 High St SE); RuPaul's Drag Race Werq the World is listed there for March 2027.
There is no gay sauna or bathhouse in Salem; the nearest are in Portland. We found no cruising area backed by two current sources, so we don't list one. There is no LGBTQ bookshop or queer-owned shop we could confirm.
Community, support and health
Salem doesn't have an LGBTQ+ community centre yet. A group is fundraising for the Salem Pride and Resource Center, planned as the city's first queer youth centre, with a "Light Your SPARC" gala at the end of November 2026. Until then, the scene runs through these groups:
Salem Capital Pride runs Pride and keeps the most complete calendar of queer events in the area at salemcapitalpride.org/events.
Rainbow Youth, active since 2001, runs groups for LGBTQ+ teens (about 14 to 18) and young adults, meeting downtown.
PFLAG Salem supports families, with a monthly parents' social at Xicha Brewing in north Salem.
HIV Alliance has a Salem office (3855 Wolverine St NE) for HIV testing and PrEP help, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Daytime meetups are spread across ordinary businesses: the Queer Silent Book Club at Prismatic Coffee on the first Sunday, a queer board-game meetup at Ticket to Play, queer yoga, a queer climbing night, Pride hikes and occasional queer mixers at local breweries. These are groups using a venue, not queer-owned businesses, and all of them are on the Salem Capital Pride calendar.
Pride and events
Salem's main Pride is Pride in the Park, a free festival in Riverfront Park on a Saturday in September, which keeps it clear of Portland Pride in June. It was on 20 September 2025 and 19 September 2026, 11am to 6pm. Salem Capital Pride put the 2023 crowd at about 8,000. Its history goes back to a 1978 gathering of nine people; the first full parade was in 1995. In 2026 the group added a June march from the State Capitol with a downtown block party. The 2027 dates were not announced at the time of writing.
Other dates to know: Eugene/Springfield Pride is in late June, an hour south, and Portland Pride is in mid-June, an hour north.
Neighbourhoods
Salem has no gay neighbourhood. For a visitor, the useful split is simple:
Downtown: the State Capitol, Willamette University, Riverfront Park and most cafés, restaurants and shops along Liberty, Commercial and Court streets. It's the only walkable part of town.
South-east Salem: where Southside Speakeasy and Prismatic Coffee are. It's mostly industrial parks and suburbs, so plan on driving.
Hawthorne Avenue (I-5 exit 253): the main cluster of chain hotels, about ten minutes' drive from downtown.
West Salem: across the Willamette in Polk County, reached on foot by the Union Street Railroad pedestrian bridge from Riverfront Park.
Keizer, directly north, is a separate city; some queer meetups (for example at Radness Ensues on River Road North) take place there.
Where to stay
If you want to walk to restaurants and Riverfront Park, stay downtown: The Grand Hotel in Salem is attached to the convention centre, and the Holman Riverfront Park Hotel (opened 2023) faces the Pride in the Park site. If you're driving, the chain hotels on Hawthorne Avenue at I-5 exit 253, such as Hampton Inn & Suites and Best Western Plus Mill Creek Inn, are cheaper and closer to Southside Speakeasy. The Hotel Salem on Commercial Street SE is about ten minutes from the bar. None of them is a gay hotel. See all Salem hotels.
Infinity Room (210 Liberty St SE), a downtown music and comedy venue that hosted drag nights and a drag brunch, closed on 21 June 2025 (Salem Reporter).
Youth Era Salem Drop, a youth drop-in centre used by many LGBTQ+ young people, closed in February 2026.
Salem's airport no longer has passenger flights: Avelo's last flight from Salem was on 10 August 2025.
Bit Bar and All Souls turn up in searches for "gay Salem", but they are in Salem, Massachusetts, not Oregon.
Practical tips
Getting here: fly into Portland (PDX), about 60 miles north. Groome Transportation runs a shared shuttle from PDX to Salem (about $43 one way in 2026), and Amtrak Cascades and the Coast Starlight stop at Salem station (500 13th St SE), near Willamette University.
Getting around: Cherriots buses cover the city, including on Sundays (roughly 8am to 8pm), but service thins out at night. For Southside Speakeasy, use a car or ride-hail.
Portland day trip: Portland's gay bars and bathhouses are about 47 miles north on I-5, roughly an hour's drive without traffic.
Weather: Willamette Valley winters are long, grey and wet; summers are dry and warm, which is why the outdoor Pride sits in September.
A few words
Locals say "the Valley" for the Willamette Valley and "Cherriots" for the buses. The "Capitol" is the gold-statue state building downtown, and "Pride" usually means Pride in the Park in September.
