Gay Cruising in Lima: The Sauna Circuit, the Plazas and the Two Limas
Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and Peruvian and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change
Lima runs on two maps. Miraflores and Barranco hold the tourist city — the clifftop hotels, ValeTodo's drag nights, the comfortable streets. The historic center holds the cruising city: a circuit of seven-plus saunas with a rhythm all their own (3 to 11 p.m., like clockwork), and the old plazas — San Martín and Neptuno — where Lima has cruised for a century. Same-sex relations have been legal here since 1924; what follows is how to work both maps, and the one taxi rule that keeps them fun.
The legal picture, and the risks that are actually real
Peru decriminalized same-sex relations in 1924 — earlier than most of Europe — and equalized the age of consent in 2012. There's no marriage, no civil unions, and no national anti-discrimination law, so social climate does the work the statute book doesn't: Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco are relaxed (same-sex affection passes without comment), the rest of the city prefers discretion. Licensed saunas and clubs operate completely in the open, and public sexual activity remains an offense — the usual Latin American arrangement.
The risks in Lima are general, not gay-specific — and three rules cover them. First: downtown after dark carries real street-theft risk; the sauna circuit and plazas are Centro territory, so ride door to door at night and carry nothing you'd mourn. Second: never hail street taxis at night — Lima's taxis are unregulated, and the ride apps (Uber, DiDi, Cabify) exist precisely to solve this; order inside the venue, step out when the car arrives. Third: the South American app-robbery pattern operates here as in Bogotá — video-verify, meet first in a public place, no strangers to the hotel on night one. And its local cousin: beware of drink spiking, known here as "pepeo" — never leave your drink unattended at crowded venues or with newly met app contacts; bottle you watched being opened, or nothing.

The sauna circuit: Lima's engine
Lima's saunas share a rhythm visitors miss: nearly all run 3 to 11 p.m. — this is an afternoon-and-evening scene, not a late-night one, with one glorious exception below. The busiest window is 5 to 8 p.m., the "hora oficina," when locals come straight from work — especially midweek, when a 6 p.m. Tuesday beats a 4 p.m. Saturday. Towel and locker at the door, entries in the 25–50 soles range (~$7–13), cards accepted at the bigger houses but soles cash is safer. Full listings on our Lima saunas page.
240 Club · Jirón Tarma 240, Centro
The institution — on the scene since the 1990s, between the historic center and Jesús María: Finnish room, two Turkish rooms, gym, bar, TV room, massage and even a kitchen. The crowd is local, friendly and loyal. And the exception that makes it the anchor: Saturdays run through the night until 8 a.m. — the only all-nighter in Lima's sauna week, and where the city's Saturday actually ends.

Assia Sauna & Spa · Gonzales Prada 433, Surquillo
The modern one, opened in 2019 by an American-Peruvian gay couple, a short hop from Miraflores: clean, well-run, and the natural first stop for visitors — the mix of tourists and locals here is the friendliest introduction to the circuit. Daily 3–11 p.m.
Sauna 69 — Clásico & VIP · Santa Beatriz / Av. Arenales 1423B
Lima's two-house split: 69 Clásico (Jirón Emilio Fernández 782) runs the bear den — dry sauna, steam, jacuzzi, darkroom, video room, furry crowd — while 69 VIP on Arenales draws the younger set with the same toolkit. Both 3–11 p.m. daily; pick your room by your type, or do both and report back.

The rest of the map
- Studio 5 Club (near the center) — TV room, darkroom, bar and private rooms at 10 soles extra; notably young crowd for a downtown house.
- Spa-rtakus (Av. Aviación 2983, San Borja) — the gym-club hybrid on the east side: steam, sauna, bar and "a variety of men," as the listings put it.
- Mylanos Club (Mariscal Miller 2128, Lince) — the private sex club of the set: ring the bell, know what you came for.
- Oupen Sauna — long praised as the cleanest and friendliest house in Lima, with two steam rooms and two dry saunas; however, some current listings report it closed. Check its venue page or socials before crossing town — and tell us what you find.
- Baños Pardo — the old mixed bathhouse appears in older guides, but under new management it's a regular baths with tripled prices and no tolerance for anything else. Skip it for our purposes.
- Money: soles cash for sauna doors and taxis; cards fine at ValeTodo and the Miraflores end. Entries: saunas ~25–50 soles (~$7–13), club covers similar.
- Condoms and lube are provided at the saunas; carry your own for everywhere else.
- PEP and testing: available in Lima within the 72-hour window through private clinics; the community addresses are Vía Libre, the veteran LGBTQ+ sexual-health organization in Miraflores, and AHF Perú (Lince/Miraflores), which runs free rapid testing and hands out free condoms — both visitor-friendly and judgment-free. PrEP users: bring your supply.
- Getting around: ride apps only at night (see the warning box). By day, beat the infamous traffic with the Metropolitano, the bus rapid-transit line with its own lane: Benavides or Ricardo Palma station in Miraflores to Colmena/Jirón de la Unión in the Centro takes about 20 minutes for S/ 3.20 — against up to an hour and a half by car at rush hour. It's how you make the afternoon sauna circuit and the Miraflores night fit the same day.
- Spanish, Lima edition: the continental four — activo, pasivo, versátil, condón — plus the local pair that does real work on the apps: caleta (discreet / low-profile / closeted — a critical word in Peru) and pata (guy, friend: "un pata de ambiente" = a gay guy). "De ambiente" remains the universal code for "one of us."
The plazas: a century of Centro cruising
Lima's outdoor scene lives where it always has, in the historic center. Plaza San Martín — the grand colonial square — and Parque Neptuno by the Museo de Arte are the two verified addresses, with a century of local pedigree. Know the current climate, though: political demonstrations in the historic center have brought a heavy standing presence of police and Serenazgo (municipal security) to San Martín in recent years, and the cruising has turned far more covert than it once was — it happens in the side streets off the square toward La Colmena and the park, not under the lights of the plaza itself. Play it with Centro rules: early dusk rather than late night, full awareness, phone pocketed, and the meeting moved elsewhere — a sauna is ten minutes away, which is the whole point of the geography. The plazas are where Lima's scene says hello; they were never where it says everything else.
The telo: Lima's discreet solution
Here's the problem the apps create: Miraflores tourist hotels often quiz or refuse local guests arriving at night, and many Lima locals can't host. The city solved this generations ago with the telo — the hourly love hotel, a South American institution: discreet, clean, cheap (S/ 30–60 for two to three hours, ~$8–16), with reception desks designed not to look at you. They cluster in Lince, Surquillo and the Centro, along Av. Petit Thouars and Av. Arenales among others, and locals book them without a second thought. If the night needs a room, suggesting a telo is normal here — not seedy, just practical — and it neatly sidesteps the hotel-front-desk question entirely.
Miraflores nights: ValeTodo and the other Lima
The social city runs 10 km southwest in Miraflores and Barranco. ValeTodo Downtown on Pasaje los Pinos is the country's most famous gay club — drag productions nightly, two dance floors, a crowd from every Lima — and the one address every gay visitor hits. Barranco, the bohemian quarter, holds the slower start: Picas under the Puente de los Suspiros, Barranco Beer Company for the craft-and-mixed crowd, and the full list of 25 is on our Lima bars page.
One door detail that strands tourists: ValeTodo checks ID at the entrance — your passport, or a clear, readable photo of it on your phone. Don't taxi over from Miraflores without one.
The rhythm that works: pisco sours and dinner in Barranco until 11 (Lima is a world food capital — don't rush it), ValeTodo from midnight, and the geography lesson — the saunas will have closed by then, except on Saturday, when 240 Club's all-nighter waits downtown. Plan the circuit for the afternoon and the clubs for the night; that's Lima's split-shift system.
The calendar
Lima Pride — the Marcha del Orgullo — lands in late June, around 20,000 people through central Lima and one of South America's major marches, with the whole scene at capacity that weekend. The rest of the year is steady: Lima has no seasons to speak of, just the grey garúa mist from June to October (which the saunas, conveniently, never notice) and blue skies the rest. ValeTodo's drag calendar and the city's roving parties fill the gaps — check our Lima events list for current dates.

Frequently asked questions
Is cruising legal in Lima?
Same-sex relations have been legal in Peru since 1924 — one of the oldest decriminalizations anywhere — and licensed saunas and clubs operate openly. There's no marriage or anti-discrimination law, and public sexual activity remains an offense, so the dependable scene is indoors.
What's the best gay sauna in Lima?
240 Club downtown is the institution — on the scene since the 1990s, with Finnish and Turkish rooms, a gym and a bar, and Saturdays running through the night until 8 a.m. Assia in Surquillo is the modern, tourist-friendly alternative, and the two Sauna 69 houses split the crowd: Clásico for bears, VIP for the younger set.
Are Plaza San Martín and Parque Neptuno active cruising spots?
Both remain Lima's verified outdoor spots, in the historic center — active in the evenings, historic by pedigree. But central Lima after dark carries ordinary street-crime risk, so treat them as early-evening territory, keep nothing valuable on you, and let the saunas carry the late hours.
Is Lima safe for gay travelers?
Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco are comfortable — same-sex affection passes without comment there. The real risks are general: street theft downtown at night, unregistered street taxis, and the South American app-robbery pattern. Ride apps door to door, meet matches in public first, and Lima treats you well.
When is the best time to visit gay Lima?
Late June for Lima Pride — the Marcha del Orgullo, around 20,000 strong through central Lima — with the whole scene at full capacity that weekend. Otherwise the city runs year-round; note that Lima's "winter" (June–October) is grey but mild, and the saunas don't care about weather.
