Gay Punta del Este: Uruguay's glamorous summer beach resort
Punta del Este is South America's most fashionable beach resort, a slim peninsula of high-rise towers, marinas, and pine-shaded dunes at the eastern tip of Uruguay's Atlantic coast, about two hours' drive from Montevideo. Life here revolves entirely around summer: from mid-December through February the city fills with Argentine, Brazilian, and Uruguayan holidaymakers, and the nightlife roars until dawn. The rest of the year it settles into a quiet, half-shuttered calm. There's no gay village or year-round scene like a big capital has one — but Punta has long had an easygoing, open reputation. It's home to Uruguay's best-known gay and naturist beach, plus the country's only exclusively-gay-men hotel.
The heart of gay Punta del Este is Playa Chihuahua, roughly 15 minutes west of the peninsula on Portezuelo bay (off Ruta 10, near the Laguna del Sauce airport). It's been an informal nude beach since the 1960s and was officially authorized for naturism by the Maldonado authorities in 2012, making it Uruguay's most famous clothing-optional beach. The roughly two-kilometer sweep of sand draws a mixed naturist crowd; the western end and the dunes have long been the gay gathering area. It's busiest on summer weekends. Off-season, it's calm and near-empty. Uruguay is one of the world's most LGBTQ-friendly countries, so the beach feels relaxed and safe, though as anywhere, it's wise not to wander alone into the wooded dunes late in the day.
Where to stay
Just behind the gay beach sits the Undarius Hotel, an adults-only, clothing-optional property for gay men. It’s the only exclusively-gay hotel in Uruguay and the closest thing Punta has to a year-round gay social hub, with its own pool and bar for guests. If you prefer a mainstream resort, the peninsula and its beaches have plenty of gay-welcoming options: the landmark Enjoy Punta del Este (the former Conrad, a five-star resort and casino on Playa Mansa that has hosted Uruguay's LGBT+ business summit), The Grand Hotel on Playa Brava, the adults-only boutique Serena Hotel on the quieter western Mansa stretch, the design-led AWA Boutique + Design Hotel near the center, and the secluded luxury villas of Fasano Las Piedras in the hills behind La Barra.
Punta's after-dark scene is seasonal and mostly mixed rather than exclusively gay. The dependable year-round anchor is Moby Dick Pub, a classic English-style pub on the port rambla open since the late 1980s that has always drawn a friendly gay and lesbian crowd alongside everyone else. In summer, the club Soho, also in the port district, hosts Punta Pride parties during the February peak. The city's two historic gay discos, Kronos and Mercury, have both long since closed. There is no dedicated gay bar operating today — outside the summer months, and for spontaneous meetups, apps like Grindr do much of the work. Note too that there is no gay sauna in Punta del Este; Uruguay's gay saunas (Toronto and Horus) are both in Montevideo.
Uruguay's flagship LGBTQ march, the Marcha por la Diversidad, takes place in Montevideo on the last Friday of September. Closer to home, the Maldonado department holds its own Marcha de la Diversidad de San Carlos each September in San Carlos, about 15 km north of Punta. Punta del Este itself has begun hosting a government-backed LGBT fun-run (Correcaminata / Carrera LGBT) starting from the La Mano sculpture around October, and the summer Punta Pride festivities add party events in February. It's a modest but growing calendar that reflects Uruguay's steady progress: the country decriminalized homosexuality back in 1934, legalized same-sex marriage in 2013, and passed a comprehensive trans law in 2018.
Getting around the neighborhoods
The peninsula divides between Playa Mansa (the calm, river-side western beach lined with resort towers) and Playa Brava (the wilder Atlantic side, home to the famous La Mano fingers sculpture). North and east, La Barra and Manantiales are the trendy dinner-and-club districts, while José Ignacio, further east, is the chic low-key village favored by the jet set. The gay beach at Chihuahua lies to the west toward the airport. Everything is spread out, so a car or ride-hailing app makes exploring the coast much easier, especially in the packed summer weeks.
