Grandma has legs like a man, geraniums everywhere, and a leaky memory. But luckily, she doesn’t care about my gender. Mom is always cold and trying to piece together the female line of our family tree (back to the 14th century, wow!). My mother tongue is speaking. My father tongue is silence. And my own language is languages, and my languages drip, drip away, merge together, flow, take root, flow.
But how to speak in this own free language about the inherited shame that is the source of constant fear and (self)limitation? How to overcome the rattling of “binary fascism,” shake out all the family skeletons, and escape the haunted garden of my childhood without simultaneously betraying those closest to me? Less patriarchy and more witches? How to fill the empty space inside and between us? A real tough nut to crack…
