Last verified: October 2026. Torremolinos is the oldest gay resort in Spain and still the most compact: the whole scene fits inside La Nogalera, a 1960s concrete complex of bar passages between the Cercanías station and the cliff, with the gay beach ten minutes below it at El Bajondillo. Choosing a hotel here is a question of three distances: to the Nogalera bars, to the stairs or lift that take you down the 50-metre cliff to the sand, and to the station that gets you to Málaga airport in ten minutes. Only two properties are genuinely gay (the ≈190-room Hotel Ritual with its nude rooftop pool, and the five-room, men-only Maracuyá Gay House); everything else is a Costa del Sol hotel that has learned not to blink. This guide gives real walking minutes, the cliff, the ID rule Spain enforces on every guest, who changed (Eden club became Palomo in March 2026, Meliá Costa del Sol is now Ocean House), the Cercanías timetable that decides your Málaga nights, and what Pride, Mad Bear and the August ferias do to prices.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Walking times are measured from the Nogalera bar passages (Plaza de la Nogalera, where Parthenon, Aqua, Bears Bar and Pourquoi Pas? sit within a hundred metres of each other) at 80 metres a minute with corners counted; the same figure appears on every hotel card on this site. The one thing the map does not show is the cliff.

    • La Nogalera and the centre (El Pozo 1 min, La Nogalera Collection 1, Costa Málaga 4, Maracuyá 5, Ritual 5, Sireno 6, Perla del Sur 6): flat, and the station is two minutes away. Clubs run to 06:00 or 07:00 on Friday and Saturday; Centuryon on Calle Casablanca hosts the Matrix parties until 07:00 and 08:00 on New Year's Eve. Rooms facing the passages hear all of it.
    • The cliff and El Bajondillo (Fénix 6 min to the bars and 2 to the beach stairs, Ocean House 5, Apartamentos Bajondillo 7, Don Pablo 11): the town sits about 50 metres above the sea. Down is 9–15 minutes by the Cuesta del Tajo stairs from Calle San Miguel or the lanes off Calle Casablanca; up is 15–20 and feels like more in August. The municipal lifts at Plaza Punta Tarifa (centre to the Bajondillo promenade) run roughly 10:00–14:00 and 15:00–18:00; a €1 fare was approved in February 2025, so carry a coin. The Ritual has its own lift down to the beach, with a key against a deposit, and the Ocean House a private summer-only one.
    • The gay beach: the middle of Playa del Bajondillo, in front of the Eden Beach club (adults-only, DJs, Bali beds, now open all year, 10:00–23:00 or midnight), about a kilometre below La Nogalera. "Playa de la Nogalera" is a nickname, not a sign. Swimwear on; there is no nudist beach in Torremolinos (the nearest official ones are Guadalmar past the airport and Benalnatura in Benalmádena).
    • Playamar (Sol Don Pedro 12 min, Hotel Isabel 16, Riu Costa del Sol 31): the family beach to the east, flat along the promenade, 20 minutes to Eden on foot.
    • La Carihuela (Amaragua 27 min, Pez Espada 30, Riu Palace Nautilus 38): the old fishing quarter and its chiringuitos to the west; 25–30 minutes along the seafront from the gay beach, or a €7–9 taxi from the bars at night.
    • Montemar: residential hill to the south-west where the Apolo Sauna Cabaret is, 10–15 minutes uphill from La Nogalera or one Cercanías stop to El Pinillo.

Gay, adults-only, or merely friendly: the honest list

Names you will find in older guides and on booking sites that do not exist in Torremolinos: "Casa Rosa", "Natursun", "Galant", a naturist "Pueblo Blanco" hotel, "Villa Guadalupe". Here is what actually operates in 2026.

    Who changed

    • Eden Night Club, the Nogalera's flagship since 2012, closed on 14 March 2026 and reopened as Palomo Night Club under new owners; Eden Beach and the Eden shop continue, and the Eden group has announced a large LGTBI "social club" on Calle Casablanca for 2027 with an open-air gym, spa and a men-only sauna.
    • Meliá Costa del Sol became Ocean House Costa del Sol Affiliated by Meliá on 1 February 2023.
    • Hotel Los Álamos is being converted into 180 co-living apartments and is no longer a hotel.
    • WonderGay Festival has not been held since 2017; Delice Dream's website is down and its 2026 and 2027 dates could not be confirmed. Do not plan around either.
    • XXL on Avenida Palma de Mallorca is a fetish cruising bar (22:00–05:00), not a sauna; the Apolo in Montemar is the only sauna on this stretch of coast, and Málaga city has none.
    • Pasaje Begoña, where the 1971 police raid took place, finished a full renovation in May 2026; a European LGTBI memory centre funded by the Ministry of Transport is planned for the building.

    Rules, visitors and the bill

    • Bringing someone back: since December 2024 Spain's Real Decreto 933/2021 obliges every hotel, hostal and apartment to file the identity of every guest with the police within 24 hours, so reception will ask your date for his DNI or passport and register him; an unregistered overnight visitor is normally refused. Book for two if there is any chance of company, and tell him to bring ID. The Ritual publishes no visitor policy; ask when you check in.
    • Nudity: on the Ritual rooftop and the Maracuyá roof, nowhere else. The beaches are family beaches by municipal designation (a 2021 petition for a nudist zone failed), and the dunes at Los Álamos towards Guadalmar are a long-standing cruising area (listing) where discretion, not law, keeps the peace; there is no "public scandal" offence in Spain any more, but the public-order fines (€601 upwards) still exist.
    • Taxes: hotel VAT of 10% is inside every price you see, and Andalusia has no tourist tax in 2026 or 2027; Málaga and Seville have asked for one and the regional government has refused. No resort fees; the Ritual charges €6 for the spa and takes deposits for towels and the lift key.
    • Smoking: a national bill approved by the government in July 2026 would ban smoking on terraces, beaches and around communal pools with €200–600 fines, but it had not passed parliament by October 2026; indoors is already banned. Cannabis is tolerated in private and fined in public.
    • Health cover: EU and UK visitors use the EHIC or GHIC at public hospitals, which includes the emergency room and PEP; private clinics bill. Everyone else needs insurance.
    • Money: a caña is €2.50–3.50, a copa in La Nogalera €7–9, a menú del día €10–13, an espeto of sardines €5–6.50 at a Carihuela chiringuito. Cards everywhere; cash for the lift and the beach beds.

    Three picks per budget

Getting in late and getting around

    • Airport: Málaga (AGP) is two stops away. The Cercanías C1 leaves the airport station every 20 minutes, reaches Torremolinos in 10–12 minutes and costs €1.80 (plus a €0.50 reusable card); first train about 05:30, last around 00:20. The station exit is on Plaza de la Nogalera, inside the scene. A taxi is €20–25 on the meter (the official board says €17–19 before supplements); Uber, Cabify and Bolt pick up from the car park three minutes from the terminal.
    • The Málaga midnight trap: the last C1 back from Málaga Centro-Alameda is at about 23:30, which is before any Málaga bar gets interesting. After that the choice is the M-110 night bus from Muelle Heredia (runs until about 02:00, 35–40 minutes, stops on Avenida Palma de Mallorca) or a taxi at €25–35 with the night supplement. The same applies in reverse: Málaga friends coming to the Nogalera need the bus or a taxi home.
    • Works warning: Renfe plans to close the C1 between Málaga and Torremolinos for about six months from late 2027 into 2028, with replacement buses. Check before booking a 2028 trip.
    • In town: everything from the station to the Bajondillo is on foot; taxis to La Carihuela or Montemar are €7–9. The M-110 and M-120 buses continue to Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Drivers: the Parkia car park on Plaza de Andalucía is four minutes from Calle San Miguel; the Nogalera streets are blue-zone or pedestrian.
    • After the clubs: La Nogalera to any central hotel is a lit two-minute walk; the stairs down to the Bajondillo hotels are dark and steep at 06:00, so take the long way round by Calle Casablanca or wait for the lift. Pickpockets work the bar passages on festival nights; the only violent crime reported in 2026 was a chain-snatching series on tourists in La Carihuela, two arrests in May.

    Health

    • PEP within 72 hours (ideally within 6): Torremolinos has no public hospital. Go to the emergency room of the Hospital Regional Universitario (Av. Carlos Haya 84, Málaga) or the Hospital Clínico Virgen de la Victoria (Teatinos), 15–20 minutes by taxi; PEP is free there with or without a health card, and the ER issues the starter pack with a follow-up appointment. The Hospital de Alta Resolución in Benalmádena is nearer but we could not confirm it stocks PEP. Private: Vithas Xanit in Benalmádena and Quirónsalud Málaga, both 24 hours.
    • PrEP and testing: free PrEP in Andalusia runs through the hospital infectious-disease units and needs registration, so bring your own supply. Apoyo Positivo runs a community centre in Torremolinos (Calle Doña María Barrabino 16) with free rapid HIV and STI tests by appointment, no health card needed; Colega and Ojalá are the Málaga associations.
    • Pharmacies: Farmacia Manrique on Calle Casablanca 11 in the Nogalera (09:00–21:00); the duty pharmacy at Avenida de los Manantiales 28 and Farmacia Garvi (Calle Pablo Bruna 1) cover the night.
    • Heat: July 2026 was the hottest on record at Málaga airport and the province counted 144 heat deaths by September; the terral, a dry wind off the interior, pushes the coast to 40°C for a day or two at a time. Water, shade at noon, and the rooftop pool after 18:00.

Torremolinos in a paragraph

The Pez Espada opened in 1959, Tony's Bar in the Pasaje Begoña followed in 1962 as what is reputedly Spain's first gay bar, and by 1971 the passage held fifty bars, enough for Franco's civil governor to send the police in on the night of 24 June and arrest more than a hundred people under the "social danger" law. The passage got its name back in 2019, the Spanish Congress and the Andalusian parliament declared it the cradle of LGTBI rights, and the Nogalera next door is now the oldest continuously operating gay quarter in the country, with Pourquoi Pas? pouring since 1968. Do the things everyone does: espetos at a Carihuela chiringuito, the sunset on the Bajondillo promenade, drag at the Apolo's cabaret, a Saturday at Centuryon, and a day trip to Málaga's Picasso and the Alcazaba, back before 23:30. Learn the words: ambiente is the scene, oso a bear, pluma camp, cancaneo cruising.

Frequently asked questions

Which Torremolinos hotels are gay or men-only in 2026?

Two gay properties: Hotel Ritual (about 190 rooms, adults only, mixed, nude rooftop pool) with its annex Ritual Sireno, and Maracuyá Gay House, the only men-only place, with five rooms. The rest of the town is friendly mainstream.

Where should I stay to walk to the bars?

Anywhere in the centre: El Pozo and La Nogalera Collection are inside the complex, the Ritual, Maracuyá, Costa Málaga and Sireno are within six minutes on the flat. The beach hotels below the cliff add a 15–20 minute climb or the lift.

Where is the gay beach?

Playa del Bajondillo in front of Eden Beach club, about ten minutes down the stairs from La Nogalera. Swimwear on; nudist beaches are at Guadalmar and Benalnatura.

Can my date come back to the hotel?

With ID, yes: Spanish law requires every overnight guest to be registered with the police, so reception will record his details. Book for two if you expect company.

Is there a sauna?

One: the Apolo Sauna Cabaret in Montemar, daily 15:00–22:00, €12–18 including towel and locker, with drag shows. XXL in the Nogalera is a cruising bar, not a sauna. Málaga city has no gay sauna.

Is there a tourist tax in Torremolinos?

No. Andalusia has no regional tourist tax in 2026 or 2027, and VAT is already inside the room price.

When are Pride and Mad Bear 2027?

Pride is expected 28 May to 6 June 2027, with the parade on Saturday 5 June, but the council has not confirmed it; Mad Bear Beach has no 2027 dates yet and normally runs the second and third weeks of August, alongside the Feria de Málaga.
